Summary
The Lan family of Luoyang was an old and prestigious clan.
For generations, the men rose steadily through the imperial court, and the women had produced both a titled Madame and an Imperial Noble Consort.
When Lan Yunjin and her twin sister reached marriageable age, they married at the same time. One was married to Pei Ye, the young heir of the Duke’s Mansion, and the other was promised to General Wei Xiao, a man feared on the battlefield as the Death King of Hell.
Both matches were arranged marriages where neither bride had met her groom.
Lan Yunjin entered the Duke’s Mansion, following the family motto to be a virtuous, well-educated wife and a dignified duchess.
On the other side, before her sister Yunying could even set foot in the general’s household, tragedy struck, and she died suddenly.
General Wei Xiao also perished soon after in a battle, but his body was never found.
…
Lan Yunjin spent her whole life confined in the Duke’s Mansion. She outlived her mother-in-law and her husband. On his deathbed, her husband told her that the woman he had loved all along was her sister Yunying.
It was like a cruel joke God played with her. Her life ended there, yet in the next moment, she was back on the night before her wedding.
After a lifetime of being the perfect wife and mother, she finally did something scandalous this time. She persuaded her sister to take her place in the bridal sedan chair.
While she herself sat in her sister’s sedan chair instead. This time, she did not meet with disaster and married Wei Xiao safe and sound.
On their wedding night, her new mother-in-law gently warned her that Wei Xiao had a hidden illness and she should be patient and understanding.
Lan Yunjin had been a mother before, so she knew exactly what that meant.
That night, she softly reassured him, “Husband, don’t worry. You’ll get better with time.”
The next day, she did not go to serve tea to the elders until noon.
Lan Yunjin was mortified and furious. What hidden illness? Wei Xiao was clearly in excellent health.
Wei Xiao did have an illness of sorts. The wife he married said she would help him recover, but in less than two days, she began avoiding him, using one excuse after another.
But good remedies are rare, and Wei Xiao had no intention of letting Lan Yunjin slip away.
His tall, broad frame could block any place she tried to go.
“Does my wife want to watch me die young and then find herself a better man?”
Lan Yunjin quickly covered his mouth. “It’s broad daylight. Don’t talk nonsense.”
Wei Xiao asked, “Will you treat me or not?”
Lan Yunjin closed her eyes with a sigh. “Fine. I’ll treat you.”
