- Chapter 36 - Experiment & An Important Conversation
“Alright, let’s begin the infection experiment with the suspected pathogen of Green Fever.”
We were in a room within The Lab. Kudell made the announcement with a radiant smile. The test subjects were four retainers who worked at The Lab, two men and two women. All of them had volunteered enthusiastically for the human trials—what a brave bunch.
“I really wanted to participate too…”
“I’ve told you many times, Lord Folca, you’ve almost certainly been exposed to the pathogen already. Even if purification magic stopped the symptoms before they manifested, there’s a chance you’ve developed immunity. So, you’re not eligible for this trial.”
One of the great things about Kudell is that she doesn’t say things like, “We can’t conduct human trials on the marquis’ eldest son.”
“I wanted to do it too.”
Risty added, sounding disappointed. Lately, I think Risty has become somewhat infected by Kudell’s mad scientist tendencies.
In the corner of the room, Mariel was twitching her cheek in discomfort.
“I’ve told you repeatedly, Lady Risty, that besides the possibility of immunity, there’s also the potential of pregnancy, so absolutely not.”
Another great thing about Kudell is that she doesn’t say things like, “We can’t conduct human experiments on the first princess.”
Still, it was genuinely a shame. I’ve trained to use magic while enduring burns or after getting stabbed in the stomach a little, but I’ve never trained to use magic while suffering from an illness.
Since I’ve never gotten seriously ill, aside from a mild cold, this could’ve been a great opportunity. Incidentally, I’ve experienced a mild cold because purification magic can’t cure it—it’s not harmful enough to trigger the “harmful” judgment of the magic.
“I’ve encapsulated the cultured pathogen candidates in edible wafers. You’ll take it orally. After that, you’ll be quarantined in the cabin outside. If all goes well, you should start showing symptoms in about five days. We’ve prepared water, food, and everything else, so enjoy your reclusive time.”
Kudell calmly explained something that sounded pretty harsh. And yet, to volunteer so eagerly for this, well, that includes me and Risty—we’re clearly not normal, right?
“Now, please take it!”
“Yes!”
The test subjects responded cheerfully and swallowed the suspected pathogen. There was no hesitation at all.
Thus, the Green Fever infection experiment began.
The result? A great success. Five days after ingesting the pathogen, all the test subjects vomited the characteristic green bile of Green Fever.
It was a historic moment—the discovery of the Green Fever pathogen—but…
The sight of pale-faced Lab members celebrating the color of their own vomit was downright bizarre. Any ordinary person would have been horrified.
Who created this organization and gathered all these strange people together…? Oh right, it was me.
◇◇ ◆ ◇◇
In Father’s study, Risty, Kudell, and I were reporting the discovery of the Green Fever pathogen.
“So, we’ve successfully identified the pathogen for Green Fever. Moving forward, we’ll be testing whether alcohol is effective, as well as determining the specific temperature of boiling water needed for disinfection.”
“Hmm, that’s excellent. At this point, it might not be wise to keep this information to ourselves in Gustique alone. When we visit the royal capital in the summer, we’ll report this to His Majesty, the King.”
“Father will be so surprised. So, I guess that means Kuu will be coming to the capital with us this summer.”
At Risty’s words, Kudell’s face turned to one of surprise.
“T-to the royal capital…? As long as Lord Folca and Lady Risty are there, I don’t think I need to…”
“Kudell, you should get out more once in a while.”
Father said with a wry smile. Kudell seemed to resign herself and replied, “Yes, my lord.”
“Hehe, I’ll get to introduce Kuu to Father.”
“W-wait, please don’t make me meet His Majesty the King! I’m not worthy of such an audience…”
“It’s fine if you’re there as one of my friends.”
Father smiled contentedly. He seemed pleased to see Risty fitting in so well with the Gustique family.
“Well then, that concludes the report.”
With our business done, we left the study.
It was dusk, and the corridor of the mansion was bathed in the reddish light of the setting sun streaming through the windows. Kudell returned to The Lab, and Risty and I headed to our room. There was no more work for today.
We had dinner in the living room of our chambers. The first asparagus of the year was served. Its subtle sweetness hinted at the arrival of spring.
With our hunger satisfied, we bathed, and the day came to an end.
“Folca, there’s something I need to talk to you about.”
When we were finally alone in the bedroom, Risty brought it up. She seemed serious.
I replied with, “Okay,” and we sat down at the table. Risty sat across from me, her expression slightly tense. Her beautiful blue eyes stared at me intently.
“Um, well, my monthly cycle… it’s late.”
Risty said hesitantly. That means…
“I’m not sure yet, but… I think I might be pregnant.”
Ever since the first time I embraced Risty, I’ve made sure that not a single drop of my seed was wasted outside of her. This is a natural result. A mixture of happiness and a bit of anxiety spread within me.
“I see… well, I hope that’s the case.”
Risty smiled shyly. She’s so cute.
“So, um, from today…”
“Yeah, I know.”
In this world, it’s generally considered inappropriate to engage in sexual activity during pregnancy. I seem to recall it being discouraged during early pregnancy in Japan too, so we’ll have to abstain from marital relations for a while.
“If my cycle still doesn’t come by the end of the week, I’ll tell Father and the others. We’ll also start sleeping in separate rooms. Is that okay?”
“Understood. Let’s do that.”
I nodded. Among the nobility of the Rolique Kingdom, it’s customary for couples to sleep in separate rooms during pregnancy. Personally, I’d like to keep sleeping together, and being able to see each other’s sleeping faces in the morning brings me happiness, but it’s best to abide by tradition.
“Yeah. Oh, but even if we sleep in separate rooms, I still want to see your sleeping face, so if I can wake up early, I’ll sneak in. You can sneak into my room too if you want.”
That’s a fine suggestion. I wholeheartedly agree.
“And also…”
Risty paused, her expression turning serious.
“I’ve heard that men… if they go five days without releasing, they’ll explode, right?”
Huh?
“It said so in that journal we read.”
Ah, if it’s referring to King Coorm, the infamous Perverted Lustful King, then yes, maybe he did explode from stress.
“For the average man, it’s a bit of an exaggeration.”
“Yeah, I know only King Coorm would let his magical power run out of control and cause destruction.”
“…He actually exploded?”
So it wasn’t a metaphorical explosion! What a dangerous man.
“And so, I’m okay with… um, I could use my mouth to help you, but… or, well… I feel strange saying this, but… you can also go to Rita, if you want. I’ll accept it.”
Risty said something shocking.
