- Chapter 41 - Greeting the Royal Family
The next day, we headed to the royal castle to pay our respects to the royal family. Along with my parents, Risty, my two sisters, and Kudell were also present.
As we entered the castle and were being guided toward the reception room by the retainers of the Rolique family, His Majesty the King appeared from the other end of the hallway. He seemed too eager to wait and quickly approached us with long strides. Following him were the Queen and the rest of the royal family.
“Risty! It’s been a while! Congratulations! I hear the child is doing well, that’s great news.”
With a loud voice, His Majesty hugged Risty. Of course, he was gentle with the embrace.
“Oh, Father, here in the hallway?”
Despite her words of protest, Risty smiled warmly.
“Dear, you should greet Marquis Gustique first…”
Said the Queen with an exasperated tone from behind.
“Oh, right! Marquis Gustique, you look well.”
The King, seemingly reminded, gave a somewhat casual greeting. Father smiled and responded, “Your Majesty, I’m pleased to see you in such good spirits.” Well, considering his beloved daughter was pregnant, it made sense that his old friend would be a secondary concern.
“Has your belly started to show a bit? I heard your morning sickness has subsided. Are you feeling alright?”
“Yes, it’s grown just a little. The morning sickness wasn’t too bad either. Come, let’s head to the room.”
Nodding, the King replied, “Yes, let’s do that,” and we all proceeded into the reception room together.
The royal family was present in full: Former King Damian, King Leogalza, Queen Charlotte, Prince Kefin, Princess Felicie, Second Queen Isabelle, and Prince Stain.
Once the door to the room was closed, Princess Felicie spread her arms wide and cried, “Sisterrrr!” as she moved to embrace Risty.
However, Risty extended her arm and placed her hand on Felicie’s head, holding her at bay. Risty’s arms were longer, so Felicie’s hands couldn’t reach her.
“Sisterrrr! I behaved myself in the hallway, didn’t I? Don’t be so mean!”
It seemed Felicie had enough self-control not to cling to her sister in the hallway. That was good news.
“No.”
With Risty’s firm rejection, Princess Felicie took a backward step, distancing herself. She then shifted her gaze to her right, feigning a movement in that direction while subtly shifting her weight to the left, attempting to circle around Risty. It was a clever feint, executed flawlessly.
But she didn’t make it. Prince Kefin grabbed her from behind in a tight hold.
“Felicie, enough. If you keep this up, I’ll suggest to Father that we marry you off to some distant land.”
“N-Nooo! Not that!”
“Then behave yourself.”
“O-Okay…”
Princess Felicie lowered her head in defeat. Seeing this, Prince Stain chuckled softly. It was nice to see the siblings getting along well.
“Ahem. Now, let’s all take a seat.”
Said Queen Charlotte, prompting both families to sit down facing each other across a long table.
“Let me formally begin. Your Majesty, Your Highness, members of the royal family—on behalf of the Gustique family, we have arrived in the capital as of yesterday. We came to offer our greetings.”
“Very well. We welcome you.”
“First, allow me to introduce Kudell Arschtan, a retainer of the Gustique family.”
“Father, she’s also my friend.”
Risty added to Father’s introduction. Kudell stood up and bowed politely.
Of course, today, Kudell wasn’t wearing her usual lab coat. She was dressed in a cream-colored dress with a dark navy blazer.
“Ah, so she’s a friend of Risty? Very well, Kudell, it’s nice to meet you.”
Hearing that she was Risty’s friend seemed to make the King’s tone much more casual. Kudell, looking a bit overwhelmed, replied, “It’s an honor, thank you so much.”
“We’ve brought two gifts to present to the royal family. First, a carriage. I made the key parts, and Folca crafted the glass for the windows.”
The second high-performance carriage, equipped with special suspension and bearings, was completed. As planned, we were gifting it to the royal family.
“It’s amazing—so comfortable with hardly any shaking.”
Risty added a concise explanation.
“A collaboration between Henrique and Folca, huh? Impressive.”
“And the second gift is a ‘centrifuge,’ which can produce whipped cream more efficiently.”
At the mention of whipped cream, the eyes of His Majesty, Prince Kefin, and Prince Stain all lit up. It seems the men of the royal family all have a sweet tooth. Well, so do I, so I guess we’re on the same page.
“Our retainers should have already delivered the items to yours, so you may want to check.”
“Very well. You have our gratitude.”
The King nodded with satisfaction.
“Next, we have a matter to report. Kudell, please explain.”
At Father’s directive, Kudell stood up again and bowed before distributing documents to the members of the royal family.
“The matter I’m reporting concerns Green Fever. To state the conclusion first: During the recent outbreak in Count Rendolf’s territory, we succeeded in discovering the pathogen responsible for Green Fever. We’ve also successfully cultured it.”
The King’s eyes widened in surprise.
“I’ll explain in detail. First, our household has long possessed a device called the ‘microscope’…”
Kudell proceeded to explain the existence and workings of the microscope, as well as its role in discovering microscopic organisms and pathogens. She described their appearance, nature, and the results of infection experiments.
The royal family listened intently to her explanation.
“I see. So, the hypothesis about microscopic organisms was correct. This is… quite a dilemma.”
Indeed, it was a tricky matter. The information would undoubtedly be valuable for advancing plague prevention efforts, but there was also an advantage to keeping such knowledge exclusive.
“The Gustique family would prefer to keep the ‘microscope’ confidential.”
“In that case, we’ll restrict knowledge of the ‘microscope’ to trusted high-ranking officials in the Rolique royal family. But if we keep the ‘microscope’ secret, it means we can’t reveal the discovery of ‘microscopic organisms’ either.”
“I’ve already prepared a plan to pass off the findings as the result of my Holy magic manipulation.”
Risty said confidently.
“Hmm. In that case, making the information public becomes an option…”
“Father, I believe it would be dangerous to release this information widely. Now that we’ve succeeded in culturing the pathogen, someone could theoretically use it as a biological weapon.”
Prince Kefin expressed his concerns. He was right—if someone truly wanted to, they could take the cultured Green Fever pathogens and sabotage a city by poisoning its wells. While such an act would be too uncontrollable to attempt, the potential danger was real.
“Your concerns are valid. Then perhaps we should limit the announcement to informing noble families ranked Count and higher that the pathogen of Green Fever has been identified as a microscopic organism.”
“The Gustique family will follow the royal family’s decision.”
“I’ll consult with my advisors and decide on the final course of action, but we’ll likely go with limited disclosure.”
“Now, let’s move on to the next topic.”
With that, the conversation transitioned to lighter topics. Kudell handed out more documents, this time regarding the greenhouse project.
“The Gustique family has a greenhouse. This is…”
Kudell gave an overview of the greenhouse. Once her explanation was complete, Father spoke up.
“So, what do you think? This setup allows for the cultivation of out-of-season vegetables and fruits. If the royal family wishes to build one, Folca will handle the glass manufacturing.”
“The thought of eating strawberries out of season… quite tempting. And we could even make cream with that centrifuge.”
Once again, the eyes of the male members of the royal family sparkled. Apparently, they weren’t as interested in impressing foreign dignitaries with melons in winter as they were in the idea of eating sweets.
“Folca, may I count on you for this?”
“Of course. As long as we have the materials, I’ll make high-quality glass for you.”
This was my time to shine.
“Materials won’t be an issue. Alright, let’s start by selecting a location.”
And just like that, the construction of a greenhouse for the royal family was decided.
After a bit of casual conversation between Father and the King, the formal greetings concluded.
