- Chapter 11 - The Seventh Friday
The Seventh Friday
It’s the next day.
Well, since I’m repeating Friday, that description might be slightly off.
Regardless, for me, it’s the next day.
As always, it’s Friday.
I woke up to the sound of the alarm clock.
Is it a love letter this time? Or will she employ some other method?
As I run simulations in my head, I open the door to the living room.
And immediately freeze.
“Ah, Aniki, you finally woke up. We have a guest.”
“Good morning, Yu-kun.”
In the kitchen are my younger sister Uzuki and another person.
A high school girl with pink-tinted hair flowing down to her chest.
She’s wearing the same school uniform as me.
That girl—Akari Sakurazaka—was standing next to Uzuki, cooking together.
I hadn’t simulated this scenario.
“Who… who are you?”
I’m bewildered, but my options are limited.
For now, I’ll pretend I don’t know who Sakurazaka-san is.
“Who? What are you saying, Aniki? She’s your friend, right?”
“I don’t know her.”
“Huh? Aniki’s saying he doesn’t know you.”
“Haha… That’s shocking…”
Uzuki, scratching the back of her head, stares at me and says,
“You played together a lot when you were kids. Seriously, Aniki, you don’t remember?”
“Uh…”
“That’s right… I’m just like a pebble on the roadside to you. I didn’t even leave a mark in the corner of Yu-kun’s memory. Just a trivial existence…”
“That’s not true at all! Aniki’s brain must be glitching… Geez, Akari-san, you’re being super self-deprecating.”
Uzuki’s eyes widen sharply, giving Sakurazaka-san a piercing look.
I fix my gaze on Sakurazaka-san.
“How did you get into our house?”
“Huh? I simply rang the doorbell and was let in. It was early in the morning, but Uzuki-chan opened the door for me.”
So she entered the house properly, not by breaking the window glass.
Uzuki must have taken Sakurazaka-san’s words at face value and let her guard down.
“Why did you come so early in the morning?”
“Sighh…”
Uzuki’s heavy sigh cuts off my words.
Placing a hand on her hip and shaking her head in exasperation, she fixed her gaze on me.
“It’s obvious, isn’t it? She wanted to see Aniki!”
“U-Uzuki-chan! Don’t say that!”
“Ah, sorry. But Aniki is incredibly dense. He won’t understand if we don’t spell it out for him.”
“Ah…”
Sakurazaka-san blushes and looks down.
Then Uzuki narrows her eyes and glares at me with a sharp look.
“Why did you forget about her even though it’s a long-awaited reunion?”
“It’s okay. It’s my fault for not being memorable. Yu-kun probably forgot about our promise too… It can’t be helped. After all, he doesn’t remember.”
“… Akari-san! You’re too kind. Now, Aniki has to take responsibility and keep that promise!”
“But… it’s not fair. To ask him to keep that promise when he doesn’t even remember me.”
“It’s okay. The one who doesn’t remember is the one at fault. Leave it to me.”
“Yes… Hehe, Uzuki-chan is so reliable.”
Uzuki scratches the base of her nose with a finger and looks at me again.
What is this ‘promise’ they’re talking about in their conversation?
However, that would soon become clear. Uzuki steps away from the kitchen and approaches me.
“You know, Aniki, Akari-san has always had feelings for you.”
“…I really don’t remember…”
“Geez, typical Aniki. It’s unbelievable.”
“I can’t help it if I don’t remember.”
“Well, yeah. If you don’t remember, you can’t be blamed. But you have to keep the promise you made back then.”
“What promise?”
“Well, about that…”
Uzuki pauses for a beat.
She slightly softens her expression and mentions the promise.
“…It was a promise to marry when you both grew up.”
I open my mouth in shock.
However, it was within the realm of possibilities.
A typical childhood promise. I don’t remember making such a promise though.
“After she transferred schools, Akari-san cherished that promise. But why did Aniki, of all people, forget?”
Uzuki scratches her head in frustration.
Is it just that I’ve forgotten? Or could it be that Sakurazaka-san is lying?
Either way——
“Assuming that’s true, it was a promise from when we were kids, right?”
“Mmm. That’s right.”
“I’m at a loss if you bring up something like that now.”
I don’t know what relationship Sakurazaka-san and I had in the past.
However, if we made such a grand promise as ‘getting married when we grow up,’ we must have been quite close.
But that was back then.
I think it’s wrong to bring up a promise made during a time when our world was so narrow.
Do you think it’s irresponsible?
Sorry to say, but in my opinion, clinging onto a childhood promise even now seems absurd.
“…I’m disappointed in you, Aniki. That’s too much.”
“That’s what I should be saying. Such things are mere child’s nonsense. Not to be taken seriously.”
Uzuki ruffles her hair and pulls a disgruntled face.
“Aniki, no matter what, that—”
“It’s, it’s okay. It’s okay, Uzuki-chan…”
“Akari-san…”
“Yu-kun isn’t at fault…”
Sakurazaka-san tries to stay strong, even as her eyes fill with tears.
What is this atmosphere…why do I seem to be the villain?
This tension is not good. At least not for me.
Uzuki glares at me, seemingly ready to scold me.
“Look Aniki, I get your perspective on the marriage promise. But, Akari-san truly loves you. She’s always, faithfully, only thought of you, Aniki. And yet, for you to forget it and brush it off is just cruel.”
I understand Uzuki’s point.
Given that I still can’t recall Sakurazaka-san at this point, I’m heartless.
But even if I remembered——
“Even if I did remember, I wouldn’t pursue a relationship.”
“…Aniki, watch your words!”
Uzuki, with rage evident in her eyes, approaches me.
Following that, Sakurazaka-san intervenes.
“U, Uzuki-chan, that’s enough…”
“But, even so!”
“Ehehe… I-I’m sorry. B-but I’ll go home now…”
“Wa-wait Akari-san!”
As Sakurazaka-san departs the kitchen, she makes a beeline straight out of the living room.
Uzuki’s attempts to stop her are in vain.
With the loud sound of the door slamming shut, silence descends upon the living room.
Then Uzuki tightly grips my clothes.
“What are you doing, Aniki?! Go after her!”
“Huh? Why do I have to…”
“Just go! Hurry!”
“Okay, okay, don’t push me!”
Uzuki forcefully shoves me out.
Once things get to this point, Uzuki won’t listen to anything I say.
It seems I have no choice but to chase after Sakurazaka-san.
After all, if I spend my time without interacting with Sakurazaka-san, time will just rewind.
Given that, wasting this opportunity would be a mistake.
Following Uzuki’s insistence, I chased after Sakurazaka-san.
