- Chapter 13 - You Thought I Didn't Notice?
You Thought I Didn’t Notice?
“I’m Akari Sakurazaka. This makes the sixth time I’m introducing myself to you. If you count the first love letter, it would be the seventh time.”
“Yes? W-What are you talking about?”
‘Repeating the same Friday.’ Her words hinted at that.
Bewildered, I stared at her. Yet, Sakurazaka-san continued.
“You thought I didn’t notice?”
“…W-What are you referring to?”
A cold shiver runs down my spine.
I feel a slow bead of sweat forming, and my mouth starts to dry.
“Aren’t you tired of this yet?”
“Tired…?”
“Yeah. Being confessed to over and over, only to reject me each time. It’s like a repetitive factory job. So, how about you date me? I think it’d be best. We could go on dates to various places, eat different things every day, have various experiences… I think it would be very fun.”
“That’s from Sakurazaka-san’s perspective. I don’t find that fun.”
“No matter how I confess or whatever situation I create, Yu-kun’s feelings won’t change?”
“They won’t. I simply prefer to be alone.”
I say, looking directly into her eyes.
Sakurazaka-san murmurs ‘I see.’ while looking troubled,
“But Yu-kun, my feelings won’t change either. I want to date you, spend as many days as lovers, and eventually, I want to marry you and live happily together.”
“…Why are you so infatuated with me?”
That was what I was most curious about.
Perhaps we had a connection in the past.
Even if so, it would be from our childhood.
To continue harboring such strong feelings from back then isn’t normal. It’s too excessive.
“You’re the only one who sees me for me, that’s why I just can’t help but love you so much. If I had to choose between you and the rest of humanity, I’d choose you without hesitation. I can only think of you because you’re the only one I can rely on in this world.”
That didn’t explain anything.
However, I could sense that she had feelings for me that went beyond mere romantic love.
It’s probably something not logical.
She seems to be obsessed with me, almost in a way that’s close to brainwashing.
“Don’t be silly… I don’t know what to do when you say things like that.”
“I’m troubled too. If you’re not here for me… Ah, Yu-kun, sit down. You must be tired of standing.”
She taps the bench next to her, prompting me to sit. Resisting at this point would be pointless.
I sit down next to Sakurazaka-san.
“We’ve gotten off-topic, but let’s stop with the farces, okay?”
“…What are you talking about? Farces? What do you mean?”
Ignoring my confusion, Sakurazaka-san continues.
“That’s enough. You don’t have to hide it. Well, I didn’t know at first either. I never thought my power had any influence on Yu-kun. I was certain by the third time.”
Sakurazaka-san slightly lifts the corners of her mouth and stands up from the bench.
She leans forward to close the distance between us and looks at me.
“The first time, our meeting ended without me seeing you. So the second time, I watched you from the moment you left your house in the morning until you got to school. I wondered if you didn’t notice the love letter. I was watching you during breaks and lunchtime too. And if you didn’t leave early, you must have noticed the love letter. That’s when I realized there might be something wrong with the love letter. When I checked it, I had made a huge mistake. I didn’t specify where I’d be waiting. I had decided to confess on the rooftop after school. Maybe I forgot the crucial part because I was daydreaming about confessing so many times. Is that what you’d call being airheaded? Ahaha, or maybe not.”
Sakurazaka-san reminisces as if revealing a secret.
I was trying my best to digest her words.
“After I added the detail about waiting on the rooftop in the love letter, you came. But even though I confessed, you rejected me. So I decided to go for the third time. I thought if we became intimate, things might go well. It’s a bit impulsive, but they say boys often think with their lower half, right? I thought it might work on you too. So, just like the second time, I waited for you to leave your house in the morning. No need to wait until after school if I’m not confessing on the rooftop. I thought of skipping school and inviting you over.”
“… What are you even saying? What’s all this about?”
“But then, I noticed something unusual.”
“…Unusual?”
“The time you left your house was different.”
Her previously cheerful tone switched.
With a cold voice that seemed to pierce my heart, she sharply said.
“Your walking pace was different. The number of times you yawned changed. You had more bed hair. One more button on your uniform was undone than usual. The order in which you put on your school shoes was different. You went to the restroom more often. The type of drink you bought from the vending machine changed. You didn’t bump shoulders with a classmate. Your breathing, behavior, gaze, blinking – everything was different. …So, that means, Yu-kun, you’re repeating today too, right?”
My heart raced.
I had tried as much as possible not to act unnaturally.
However, no matter how much I tried, there was no way I could perfectly replicate my actions.
There would always be some discrepancies. Some parts I’d forget.
“How could you possibly know that…”
“Because I’ve been watching you, Yu-kun. Always, always watching. There’s no way I could forget. There’s no way I could be made to forget. But I was surprised…I never thought this power would affect you too.”
With a sly smile, Sakurazaka-san grabs my hand.
“Don’t you think this is fate? We can be together forever. If we rewind time, we can be together eternally. Sometimes, we can let time flow normally and age. I want to marry you. I think an adult Yu-kun would be incredibly handsome. But the current Yu-kun is wonderful too. I wouldn’t mind if today continued forever. With me by your side, you can do anything. No matter what crime you commit, I can rewind time for you. I can make all of Yu-kun’s wishes come true. We can be together, literally, forever…”
“Don’t… don’t joke around. What on earth are you talking about?”
All I could do now was to put on a brave front.
Sakurazaka-san knew everything, now I was exposed.
No matter how much I played dumb or added to the lie now, there was no going back.
“I’ll repeat it as many times as needed. I’ll rewind time until my confession is successful.”
Sakurazaka-san grips my hand even tighter.
Then she lifts it up to her chest, as her pink hair sways in the wind.
“So… why not just date me, Yu-kun?”
And so, I was receiving yet another one of her confessions.
The cold sensation of Sakurazaka-san’s hand, her sweet voice, those eyes staring right at me, all of it was making my nerves stand on end.
I felt as if every pore in my body had opened up, with a sensation of sweat pouring out like a waterfall.
I felt a chill.
“There’s… there’s no way I’m dating you.”
“Why won’t you date me?”
I want to be alone.
I don’t want to be part of a group.
I’m not the same as I was before.
Moreover, the reason I won’t date Sakurazaka-san isn’t just because I like being alone.
It’s because I’ve felt, to my core, the immense power she holds.
Defying the laws of physics, it’s literally time rewinds.
A power that can be called godlike without exaggeration.
I can’t choose to date someone with such power.
I shouldn’t. I mustn’t.
I shake off Sakurazaka-san’s hand.
Then I hastily left the park without looking back.
Running away isn’t a solution.
But right now, all I can do is run.
All I could do was run.
