Absolute Regression - Chapter 10
Slowly, I walked along the passage of the stone cave.
The interior was well-ventilated, and thanks to the light coming in from the top of the cave in various places, the inside was not dark.
One could tell that this place was crafted by a skilled artisan, with intricate designs and craftsmanship.
As I walked slowly through the cave, at one point, I felt a slight ripple in the surroundings.
Ssshh.
I knew instantly. The highest-level technique, perceptible only to masters, had been activated.
It was only natural. Why couldn’t the dead just leave? If the gate was too difficult, they could just give up and leave. But they couldn’t leave because they couldn’t break through the gate. When entering, it was easy to walk in comfortably, but if you couldn’t break through the gate, it would transform into a hellish place which you could never escape from.
How far had I walked?
A fairly large square emerged.
At the entrance of the square, there was a monument explaining the first gate.
一, Cut down all enemies without using sword qi or sword vigor.
二, If unsuccessful within the time limit, another opportunity will be given ten days later.
三, Those prepared shall stand in the red circle.
“Ten days later? What will I eat until then?”
Looking around, I saw jars filled with food pellets stacked against the wall.
“I’ll go crazy if I eat this tasteless stuff for ten days.”
Without hesitation, I stood in the center of the square marked in red.
Shortly after, with a clanking sound, dozens of wooden doll figures shaped like humans rose from all directions. The parts to be cut were painted red. Some dolls had their necks painted, some their arms, and some their legs.
My body reacted reflexively.
As those dolls rose, I leaped into the air, instinctively deciding which part to strike first.
Swish. Swish. Swish.
The wooden dolls were cut down one by one.
The dolls were not fixed in one place. The floor panels began to move, changing their positions.
In the midst of the chaos, some dolls started descending back down.
“No!”
I could tell. If I missed those descending dolls, they would not rise again, and it would be a moment of failure.
So, I cut down the descending dolls first.
However, other dolls quickly moved to hinder my path.
With a leap, I wielded my sword.
Swish!
A doll that I almost missed was cut down.
The movements of the dolls became faster and faster. Initially, I thought this gate was testing martial arts skills, but it wasn’t. This gate tested judgment.
What should be cut down first?
Swift and accurate judgment took precedence, and martial arts came second.
The gate was complex and difficult, but my instincts and skills were not sophisticated enough to surpass it easily.
In this way, I cut down all the dolls and safely passed through the first gate.
One thing was certain. If my skill level before regression had been the same, I would never have passed this first gate. No matter how much I ran, rolled, flew, or caused chaos, I would have failed.
Now I understood why the test resumed ten days later.
Many challengers would have failed this first challenge, and at least ten days of careful study and practice would have been necessary to succeed.
Moreover, only those who remembered exactly how the dolls moved and which ones descended at what time would be able to devise a strategy. Dull-minded challengers would have had to repeat their attempts many times.
Seeing the first gate, I also understood why the average time to pass the first gate in the Little Heaven Cave was said to be three years.
Dr-r-r-r-r-r.
As I passed the first gate, the stone door to the second gate opened simultaneously.
I slowly made my way towards the second gate. Just before exiting the main gate, I noticed something inscribed on the wall. It was the writing of the deceased who had come before me, left on the wall near the exit.
― I succeeded on the ninth attempt. Hahaha.
― I did it on my sixteenth try.
― This is insane!
― I finally succeeded on my thirty-seventh attempt. Tears blurred my vision after the long struggle.
― Am I going to die here? I can’t figure it out. I resent my father.
― Damn it! I tried to go back, but there was no turning back.
― Success on the sixth try. I dare say it’s the best.
Among them, I saw a familiar handwriting at the bottom.
― Fools.
It was my father who had passed through this gate before me.
“Hahaha.”
I couldn’t help but burst into laughter. He must have passed in one try.
Even so, strictly speaking, they were ancestors, but he boldly cursed them from the start.
“Father, I also passed on my first try! Hahaha!”
With that, I moved on and arrived in the space where the second gate was located.
Sure enough, there was a monument in the second square as well.
一, Use the sword hanging on the wall to split the stone into two halves within an hour. Sword qi or sword vigor may also be used.
二, If unsuccessful within the time limit, another opportunity will be given twenty days later.
三, Those prepared shall stand in the red circle.
This time, the retest would be twenty days later.
It meant that it was twice as difficult as the first gate, calculated easily.
“Endure twenty days with food pellets? I’d rather die.”
With determination to succeed, I stood in the red circle in the center of the square.
Clank.
A stone platform rose from the ground. On the stone platform lay a cast iron object shaped like an adult head.
“I have to cut this cast iron object.”
The given time was one hour.
It was too long to cut just one cast iron object. Surely, there was a reason for it, so I carefully inspected the cast iron object.
Its surface was not smooth like ordinary iron but artificially made stone.
Naturally, it must be a material stronger than iron. When I tried to lift it without using my internal energy, it was so heavy that I couldn’t lift it.
On the wall hung hundreds of swords to be used in the test. There were various types, from long swords to short daggers, heavy broadswords to light swords, and even flexible swords worn at the waist. It meant to carefully choose and challenge multiple times.
I walked slowly and took out a sword hanging on the wall. It was a well-made ordinary iron sword.
Standing in front of the cast iron object, I calmed my mind and swung the sword forcefully.
Clang!
With a cheerful sound, the sword broke and flew off. Meanwhile, the cast iron object remained unscathed. It was indeed a strong metal.
I picked up the cast iron object again. To the naked eye, it looked like an ordinary piece of iron.
I brought another sword and swung it with the hilt this time.
Again, only the sword broke, and the cast iron object remained intact.
“It’s not going to be easy.”
I brought a new sword and infused it with my inner energy.
Hmmmm.
Soon, a blue light flashed from the sword. It was the activation of sword vigor.
Before the regression, at this age, I could use sword qi, but I couldn’t activate sword vigor. I didn’t grasp the essence of sword vigor until I was in my thirties.
“The first sword vigor after regression.”
The color of sword vigor varied for each individual, even if they had learned the same technique. I always found it fascinating how the color differed slightly for each person.
I like the color emitted by my sword vigor. Sometimes it feels like the sea, and other times, like the sky – this pleasant shade of blue.
At the moment when I was about to slowly cut the cast iron object with my sword vigor, suddenly, I felt a looming sense of crisis and quickly withdrew my inner energy. As a result, the sword vigor imbued on the sword disappeared.
“Isn’t this too easy?”
At first glance, I thought it might be a test to see if challengers could use sword vigor since ordinary swords wouldn’t cut it. It seemed difficult with sword qi. Therefore, it was a test that one couldn’t escape until they awakened sword vigor.
But for those with a post-regression proficiency index in sword vigor, they would easily cut through and pass.
Was this gate really that simple?
On the contrary, it was extremely challenging for someone who couldn’t activate sword vigor to reach the stage of doing so.
One side was too easy, and the other side was too difficult. Something was off balance.
So, out of curiosity, I went to see the writings left by the seniors on the wall.
― Split the stone into two halves within a day using sword vigor.
― I tried to cut it without using sword vigor eighty-nine times, but all failed and finally succeeded by using sword vigor.
― I cut it without using sword vigor.
― How on earth? I can’t believe it.
― Damn it! My sword qi doesn’t cut it. I can’t emit sword vigor, what should I do?
― It’s been two hundred days since I researched sword vigor. The smell of the stone platform makes me want to vomit.
― It’s a lie that they cut it without using sword vigor.
― I vote for the lie.
What I wanted to see was the writings left by my father.
As expected, the last words left by my father.
― Nonsense.
Hahaha. He said nonsense to our ancestors. He must have suffered a lot trying to act dignified.
But this time, he added a word next to it.
― You lose if you hesitate.
“Why did he add such words? If it were my father, he would have just cursed and left like he did at the first gate.”
You lose if you hesitate? Why did he say that? Perhaps?
I quickly went back to the initial stone slab.
一, Split the stone into two halves within a day. Sword qi or sword vigor may also be used.
The phrase caught my eye.
“Sword qi or sword vigor may also be used”?
It wasn’t “use,” it was “may also be used.” In other words, if cutting doesn’t work, use it, right?
Now that I think about it, the given time is too long. With a day, there would still be time left after cutting hundreds of stones like that. Moreover, the excessive number of swords hanging on the wall was also suspicious.
“Ah! This gate must be cut without using sword qi or sword vigor.”
My father’s words about losing if hesitating were a warning not to use sword vigor. When sword vigor is activated, heat emanates from the sword.
There was a fact that supported this conjecture.
The retest period of twenty days meant it was more demanding than the first gate.
This had to be done simply by cutting.
“Thank you, father.”
Anyway, if I wasn’t going to use sword vigor, there was no time to waste.
I went back to the cast iron object.
It looked different now that I was certain I had to cut it without using sword vigor.
“How should I cut this? Vertically? Horizontally? Diagonally? Or with a swift sword? With a heavy sword?”
I tried various prepared swords, but only the inferior ones broke, and the cast iron object remained intact.
After repeated failures about thirty times, I leaned against the wall halfway in resignation.
“There must be a way.”
The cruel time kept flowing, and now there was hardly any time left.
“Should I try again in twenty days?”
I was in a state of half-resignation.
“Should I just cut it with sword vigor and pass?”
But my father deliberately left a message, so I couldn’t choose the easy way out.
“It’s difficult, really difficult.”
Sitting there in resignation, I absentmindedly emitted my inner energy. It was a skill I learned from my father on the mountain.
A strand of energy extended from my body and reached the cast iron object.
“I wish you were a wild boar. Then you’d be sliced in one stroke.”
The energy enveloped the object and slowly felt its surface.
Suddenly, my eyes widened.
“Huh?”
There was a faint line on the surface of the object. It was a line that couldn’t be seen or felt when looked at or touched.
I focused all my mind to sense it. My energy began to envelop it like a bird nesting on its egg, striving to become one with the object.
The line ran along the surface of the object and met at the starting point again.
I stood up and approached it slowly. My energy still connected me to the object.
With closed eyes, I relied solely on my energy to feel the object and accurately struck the line with my sword.
Swish.
I didn’t strike forcefully. I focused on precisely hitting the line on the object without any margin of error.
The next moment, something amazing happened.
Snap!
The object was split in half. The line was indeed a vulnerable point that could accurately divide the object.
And there was more amazing thing waiting for me.
Clatter.
A pill rolled out from the split part of the object.
