- Chapter 2 - Ji Mingyuan
A featherless bird with bulging eyeballs rested nearby.
Its exoskeleton was clearly visible, with only a little pink flesh hanging on the bones, and its internal organs weren’t visible. Looking at its appearance, it should’ve been dead according to common sense, but it was still screaming hoarsely.
”Hello!”
Or perhaps it was a disgusting parrot that had learnt to talk.
Wen Bei stared at the strange bird, worried that it would fly into the Hotel.
The parrot pecked at the remaining flesh and blood on its bones, then suddenly turned its head and looked straight in the direction of Wen Bei. It opened its mouth and stuck out its purple tongue, screaming: “Hello! Hello!”
Wen Bei calmly took a step back, planning his escape route in his mind.
In the next second, the vines the bird rested on suddenly rose up and strangled it, followed by the sound of broken bones.
The creature which had just said hello and perished from Wen Bei’s sight forever.
After strangling the creature, the weird vines returned to their original still state.
From nowhere, it looked like it had just strangled and devoured a skeletal bird.
Witnessing the demise of life in just an instant, Wen Bei had a more concrete understanding of the world.
The Rabbit Butler jumped out, propped up his body on his two hind paws in a very cartoonish way and jumped over: “The Hotel is immune to all the filth. You don’t have to worry.”
Wen Bei grasped the key: “Filth?”
Rabbit Butler explained: “Yes. Filth is described as a creature or an object with a pollution level of 100 and above. Of course, it’s a term invented by the humans of this world.”
”This is the fifth year after the end of the world. In the last five years, humans have completely lost their status from being on the top of the food chain to the bottom. Ordinary humans can only live in the base to slow down the speed of their own pollution.”
Wen Bei: “What about extraordinary humans?”
Rabbit Butler: “Those are called the polluters. When the pollution value reaches 50 or more, they will gain supernatural abilities. The kind of ability they gain is linked to their pollution value. However, when the pollution value of these individuals rises to 90 or above, they will turn into filth. The risk is high.”
When the Butler Rabbit told him about it, a look that seemed like a sigh or a look of ridicule flashed in his eyes: “Polluters are both heroes and… unknown hidden dangers to the collective interests of mankind.”
Accordimg to the Rabbit, humans were really stupid and contradictory creatures, and extinction was probably the best outcome for the human race.
Wen Bei frowned.
He could feel that Butler Rabbit had a theatrical attitude towards human survival.
But he, himself, didn’t and he couldn’t.
What a hotel relies on for its business is, of course, the people who stayed there.
In short, the messy filth outside didn’t help his situation in any way.
What he wanted was to make money.
And for that purpose, every human being was his potential consumer.
Every customer was God!
So Wen Bei slapped the Butler Rabbit on the head to signal him to stop gloating anymore.
Rabbit Butler: ‘OK, you are noble.’
It angrily turned his back to Wen Bei, and the original villainous aura on its body disappeared, leaving only his naivety.
Wen Bei felt a little headache: “So apart from this shabby hotel, don’t I have any benefits as the new boss?”
Butler Rabbit turned around and looked at him with red eyes: “There is a gift bag for newbies.”
Wen Bei followed his prompts, and sure enough, after entering the lobby on the first floor of the hotel, he found the system screen that only he could see.
Shown on the screen were two sections: shopping mall and employment.
Sales volume was also displayed at the top.
It was a bleak 0 at the moment.
After opening the novice gift bag, five objects dropped out of it, including three sets of clothes, a free unlocked employee card, a black dagger which gave off a cold light, and finally a backpack full of carrots.
What a shabby newbie gift package.
Wen Bei was expressionless. In the end, he felt that the only valuable thing was the employee card.
So he opened the employment page and wanted to select a reliable employee to serve him.
It showed that every employee who had signed a contract with him would unconditionally obey his instructions during his tenure without fear of betrayal.
The existence of the Hotel could protect the owner’s interests and guarantee the safety of his life to the greatest extent.
Every employee in the employment section was grey and needed to be unlocked. There were lizard men who could breathe fire and could be used as security guards, researchers who had come from the interstellar world and had the ability to fly mechas, and chefs who had won the titles of Master of Cooking. There was a dazzling array of everything. The only thing they had in common was that they were all very expensive.
The employment price was jaw-dropping number of crystals.
Crystals were the only recognized currency in the apocalyptic world.
Wen Bei took a look at his zero balance and decided to make good use of the employee unlock card.
When he was concentrating on selecting employees, there was a sound under his feet.
He looked down and saw Rabbit, who suddenly looked at him shyly.
Wen Bei had a bad feeling in his heart.
Sure enough, the Butler Rabbit’s next words ruined all his careful calculations.
The Rabbit Butler put his little paw to his mouth and coughed, his eyes wandering: “That….the employee unlock card has already been used to unlock me.”
It blinked his big eyes, trying to be cute.
”I hate this. Why can’t I have someone else?”
…
”A juvenile ventral spider at three o’clock!”
”There’s one coming from the right too!”
With the continuous explosions, the well-trained mercenaries accurately penetrated the Achilles’ heel of the filth with one shot after another.
The smelly blood exploded, and when the bright highly corrosive green liquid fell to the surroundings, it corroded large holes in the ground. The seemingly peaceful weeds around them screamed and then curled up.
”CAREFUL!”
A loud roar came from behind Bai You. The man with a slightly younger face turned around in horror and found that a bell-faced spider had rushed towards him with its ferocious mouth parted open.
It swung over with spider silk. At such a close radius, there was no time to dodge. His brain worked frantically but the body was frightened and failed to react.
Whoops…
A sound broke through the air accompanied by the cry of an eagle.
The phantom eagle took the blow for Bai You, and at the same time, the sharp tail feathers fanned, directly splitting the bell-faced spider into two. With the demise of the spider, the phantom eagle also disappeared.
The disgusting innards of the spider flowed all over the floor.
Bai You almost let go of the gun in his hand, feeling a little unsteady on his feet.
He looked at Ji Mingyuan, who had saved his life, with uncontrollable gratitude in his voice: “Thank you, team leader.”
Ji Mingyuan slowly shook his head to indicate that it was fine.
The bell-faced spider was split in half, and its legs were still twitching.
Someone in the team spat in disgust.
Ji Mingyuan: “Hurry up and collect the available parts, as well as the spider glands that the research institute wants.”
Only the silk it spinned out was usable, other parts were highly poisonous. Meanwhile, the glands were used for research.
The man’s words obviously had a high prestige among the team. As soon as he spoke, everyone started to take action without any ambiguity.
Bai You looked at him with admiration.
The reason why he joined the mercenary group was Ji Mingyuan.
That man was so calm, as if as long as he was around, no matter how terrible the filth was, it couldn’t hurt humans.
Feeling the sight, Ji Mingyuan glanced at him, nodded and stood aside to be on guard.
It felt like the team leader had become more reticent recently.
This thought flashed through Bai You’s mind.
From an angle that they couldn’t see, Ji Mingyuan clenched his fists to suppress the itching that flooded his bones.
He wanted to destroy something.
He wanted to use his powers to destroy everything around him.
Ji Mingyuan looked down at the black ring on his wrist vaguely.
Blue words appeared on it: [Current Pollution Value: 94. 】
[Warning, mandatory reporting will be carried out after the pollution value reaches 95. 】
Ji Mingyuan said nothing and put down his hand as if nothing had happened.
Everyone had to report to the base after reaching a pollution value of 90, but he hadn’ done that. Instead, he had taken advantage of the opportunity of a mission to directly leave the Base.
After reporting the matter, he would only be controlled and would have to wait for his death. But that was contrary to what he wanted. What he wanted was to do something meaningful before his death.
Recently, the base had been troubled by the ventral spider. A steady stream of juvenile spiders appeared, but they couldn’t find the mother and kill them all.
The toll on casualties had amassed to a hundred people.
In the last days of sparse population, such numbers are shocking.
All Ji Mingyuan wanted to do was find the mother body, and then self-destruct.
This was the last thing he wanted to do.
Ji Mingyuan’s whole body hurt as if his bones had been crushed, but he remained silent.
Looking from afar, nothing seemed out of place.
After cleaning up the corpses of the spider larvae, someone with sharp eyes discovered a stationery store that was not contaminated by overgrown filth plants.
Everyone decided to go in to rest together.
