- Chapter 39 - “Are You Scared?”
From their confession, Wen Bei managed to obtain a list of all those who had participated in human trafficking.
The members of the Dark Fire Guild accounted for more than half.
They were also the largest customer group for the black market human trafficking.
Li Shi and the fat man knew everything about the matter and confessed to them without even daring to look up at the man standing next to Wen Bei.
The man seemed to have no interest in what they were saying. He just stood aside with his eyes downcast, holding Wen Bei’s hand and playing with it.
After Wen Bei tried to pull his left hand away, only to avail no success, he just ignored it and let Qiu Tin do whatever he wanted.
The fat man and Li Shi were both afraid that the other party would say more than themselves, so they rushed to finish what they had to say.
They even revealed the location and time of the next transaction.
After he finished speaking, Li Shi’s face was fully wrinkled with a smile: “I…I have told you everything I know, can you let me go first? This matter really has nothing to do with me…”
Wen Bei gave him a look of annoyance and turned his head to look at Qiu Tin.
The man who received his gaze raised his eyebrows and inserted his fingers into the young man’s fingers, almost interlocking their hands. He chuckled and didn’t seem to mind being used as a thug by the young man. He even enjoyed it.
Qiu Tin asked in a low voice with a hint of sultry charm: “Aren’t you curious about why my ability is called 【Pollution】? Look carefully now.”
As soon as he finished speaking, the huge black wings behind him suddenly disappeared, and appeared under the feet of the fat man and Li Shi.
The wings, which had switched to another form, appeared on the ground in the form of black fog, which was high enough to cover the ankles. Some of the black fog transformed into pairs of black hands, resembling those evil spirits in movies which crawled out of hell. When the first hand touched the fat man’s body, his whole body suddenly became shrivelled.
Wen Bei opened his cat eyes slightly and was startled.
A familiar electronic voice echoed in the air— 【Attention! Attention! The pollution level in your body has reached the critical point of 95. You are still 5 points away from becoming filth. Please accept control and stay away from the base!】
Wen Bei looked at the detection bracelet hidden on the fat man in astonishment, but the alarm was not the most serious thing.
Soon the bracelet’s alarm quickly rose from 95 to 99.
【Warning! Warning! The subject has been captured!】
【Pollution degree has hit 100!!!】
It only took ten seconds for a polluter to completely turn into filth. Wen Bei didn’t even have the time to react before he saw the water and fat on the fat man’s body quickly evaporate, turning him into a mummy-like existence.
However, this mummy was still able to move normally. It suddenly stared at Li Shi who was standing next to it, pounced on him and bit him hard.
Li Shi had never seen such a monster. He dodged the incoming attack while looking at Qiu Tin with naked eyes, as if he was looking at a monster: “You…”
Before he could finish his words, his feet suddenly felt cold.
He lowered his head and saw that the pairs of black evil hands were holding onto him tightly.
Qiu Tin snapped his fingers lightly, and in an instant Li Shi’s face began to mutate. His mouth protruded and became longer, and the flesh-coloured tail behind him, which was originally like a rat’s tail, began to lengthen. His hands began to degenerate and turned into short limbs lying on the ground, and grey fur grew on his body.
Within just five seconds, the detection bracelet on his body also issued an identical alarm.
Then, the once human suddenly turned into a giant rat with a vaguely human face.
The rat and the mummy began fighting, while all the puppets originally controlled by the fat man turned back into ordinary corpses and fell limply to the ground, with their joints seemingly broken.
The fat man and Li Shi seemed to have lost their human memories and sanity, left with the sole intention of destroying all living things around them.
Their detection bracelets no longer issued alarms because the subjects they were monitoring had disappeared in a sense.
A chill ran through the soles of Wen Bei’s feet. Earlier, he had wondered about the working of Qiu Tin’s ability, but he had never imagined that what he was controlling was the true essence of pollution.
Suddenly a pair of hands appeared in front of him, blocking his view.
Qiu Tin’s voice was filled with unconscious coldness: “Are you scared?”
Did he also think that he was a monster and should be sealed away?
A murderous aurabegan to fill the man’s eyes, but his hand, which was blocking the young man from seeing the bloody scene, remained motionless.
Even though he had lost his vision, he could still hear the sound of wild beasts biting each other.
Wen Bei took a deep breath, reached out and grabbed the man’s hand, regaining his sight.
The astonishment in his eyes faded away, leaving only calmness: “How are you going to deal with this?”
Qiu Tin: “What?”
Wen Bei rubbed his forehead and asked again, “How are you going to explain to others why two filthy creatures suddenly appeared in the base?”
It was rare that Qiu Tin was stunned for a moment.
He didn’t expect that the young man’s first reaction was not to stay away from him or dislike him, but to ask him a question which he thought was irrelevant.
But the young man looked very concerned, with a frown on his face. A look of serious thought flashed in his cat-like eyes that always looked a little moist, and, soon a distressed expression appeared on his pretty face, making people want to smooth out the wrinkles between his brows for him.
Qiu Tin put away all his emotions and returned to his expressionless look, making him look unpredictable.
He quietly looked at Wen Bei for a few seconds, and just when the two filths were about to bite each other to death, he suddenly spoke: “There are explosives buried underneath.”
Wen Bei raised his head, almost thinking he had heard it wrongly: “What?”
”Explosives.” Qiu Tin repeated.
He moved his fingers slightly, and a dozen hands transformed by his abilities instantly separated the two. Then one of the hands groped out a small machine with a button and put it in front of them.
Qiu Tin took the detonator and spoke casually: “Just blow them all up.”
The explosives Qiu Tin was speaking about were what Li Shi had used up all his savings to buy at the black market. His purpose was to bury the fat man and others here forever. However, he never expected that they would be used on himself in the end.
Wen Bei reacted. He had no empathy for Li Shi, a polluter who had killed countless ordinary people. He just didn’t expect him to be so vicious.
Since the beginning, they had no intention of letting any of them leave alive.
Qiu Tin stretched out his hand and suddenly grabbed Wen Bei, and the huge black wings spread out behind him once again, but this time the wings completely wrapped around Wen Bei.
Before he could react, the detonator was pressed.
A huge roar erupted from underground, accompanied by a terrifying and dazzling fire.
Wen Bei, wrapped in the wings, was isolated from the sound that was loud enough to crush his eardrums. He raised his head and could only see the pair of red pupils slowly shrinking in the darkness.
Outside the strong embrace was a mess caused by the blast, but the man held on to his black wings tightly, without even the slightest shake.
For a moment, Wen Bei even felt like he was in a safe eggshell, as if everything happening outside would not disturb him.
Soon the aftermath of the explosion dissipated, and the black wings on Qiu Tin’s body were slowly retracted.
All traces of pollution disappeared, leaving only ruins, and they stood on the ruins, so close that they seemed to be hugging each other.
…
Huang Qian had no idea what was going on. She had just taken the woman to a slightly safer place and had spoken less than two words when a loud sound erupted from the abandoned construction site that they had just moved away from.
The firelight illuminated her face and also reflected her panic.
Since becoming the guild president, she had rarely felt that frightened.
Almost without hesitation, she took off her high heels and ran back towards the construction site, praying madly in her heart for Wen Bei to be okay.
A huge sense of guilt appeared within her, and she began to regret her decision of leaving first.
In her eyes, the owner of the Hotel was not only her saviour, but also the only ray of hope in the absurd apocalyptic world.
If something happened to such a person, she would never be able to forgive herself.
Huang Qian stumbled back without caring about her image, and just happened to see Wen Bei pushing Qiu Tin away with a look of disgust.
The man who was pushed away in disdain was not annoyed at all. Instead, he moved closer with a smile in his eyes: “Are you scared?”
It was obvious at first glance that he pressed the detonator on purpose without any warning.
Wen Bei glared at him angrily, and the man’s handsome face with a bit of evil was reflected in his clear and clean cat eyes. If he was really a cat, he would have scratched his face by now.
Qiu Tin, who was glared at, was still in a good mood and whispered something.
It only made Wen Bei more angry, and he told him to get away.
Huang Qian, who had been running all the way over, clearly saw such a scene and almost choked.
She regretted it again.
‘Did I run over here in a panic just to eat this bite of dog food?!’
Wen Bei turned around and just happened to see Huang Qian standing close to outside the ruins.
He waved at her and approached her carefully over the broken rubble: “Were you not hurt?”
Huang Qian shook her head: “We were both safe. I just rushed over after hearing the explosion.”
After Huang Qian finished speaking, she couldn’t help but look up at the man again.
Her intuition told her that he was deeply involved in the sudden explosion, but the man didn’t pay any attention to her and just watched at Wen Bei.
Even so, the feeling of oppression still made her feel uncomfortable.
Huang Qian tried her best to ignore it and asked, “Where are they?”
Wen Bei: “…buried underneath.”
Their bodies must have been destroyed from the explosion, so they could deal with it using the simplest method.
No one would specifically try to dig up their remains. Even if people who came to clean up the scene found their bone fragments and other remnants, they would not take them for research.
In the end times, the death of one or two people was not enough to require manpower to investigate, not to mention that there are many puppet corpses mixed in, it would be impossible to tell the difference.
As for the detection bracelets, the speed at which they were transformed into distorted objects was too fast, and the explosion occurred within less than two minutes. Although the bracelets were difficult to destroy, such a severe explosion would’ve been enough to damage them.
Even if the base officials noticed that the pollution values of the two people had changed drastically before their deaths, they would not believe what had exactly happened and would simply think that the bracelets were damaged in the explosion and reported an error.
After Wen Bei finished his judgement, his shoulders relaxed slightly, and a rare look of fatigue appeared on his face.
After hearing what he said, Huang Qian roughly guessed what the bombs were used for. She stopped asking questions and skillfully said that she could stay and deal with the Lawful Army.
Such a serious explosion had just happened, it was bound to attract attention.
The most basic investigation was definitely indispensable.
Huang Qian: “This matter is very simple. There is a traitor in the Dark Fire Guild. A guild member and the former guild leader had an internal conflict and a fight broke out here. Then the member used a bomb that had been buried in advance to blow up the former guild leader.”
TN’s Note:
My exams are done. Some went well, others went shitty. So I’m back now. Hopefully, I’ll be able to be regular.
