- Chapter 4 - Meeting Another Human
The more he moved forward, the more rational he appeared, with a delicate face showing calmness and composure that did not match his age.
After successfully arriving at the dormitory building, without another thought, he climbed upstairs to check out the situation. Many dormitories inside had their doors and windows closed tightly.
From his observation, Wen Bei could infer that when the end of the world dawned, it was still daytime on a working day. Thus, the students were still in class with probably few hiding in the dormitory. That explained the locked doors.
The dormitory building looked cleaner than Wen Bei’s expectations. It seemed to have been maintained well before the end of the world.
However, Wen Bei didn’t have time to dwell on how to open every single door to find useful supplies.
He stood on the fourth floor and looked out. From where he stood, it was high enough to clearly see the current situation of the entire playground.
It was not a very good idea to stay in the dormitory for a long time. Thus, Wen Bei had decided to scourge the canteen first. He would only scavenge through the dormitory if it was necessary.
Just when he was about to walk out with the same sneaky steps that he had used to enter the building, his attention was diverted to a sudden movement on the playground.
He was stunned for a moment. When he looked carefully again, he really saw a human who had probably broken into the playground!
Ji Mingyuan was almost out of his mind, and his desire for destruction had reached its peak when he saw the spiders on the playground.
Every time the bell-faced spiders lay an egg, they needed a human head as a warm nest for incubation. There were so many eggs in the playground because the female had killed everyone in the school and taken their heads to create a horrific hell-like scene.
Experts have deduced that it nearly takes five years for the eggs of the bell-face spider to hatch successfully. And just to create more complications, it had been exactly five years since the apocalypse began. This meant that the eggs were close to hatching.
Once all the larvae hatched and matured, the consequences would turn out disastrous.
Ji Mingyuan’s eyes were red, and he couldn’t tell whether it was because he was feeling too uncomfortable or because he was angry. The moment he raised his hand, an illusory black eagle swooped down from the sky with a long roar.
Ji Mingyuan directly used his superpower to split the nearest spider egg into two pieces.
The smelly green liquid surged out as the egg was split open, and it was immediately absorbed by the spider silk on the ground connecting to other eggs around it.
Wen Bei’s pupils narrowed for a moment, and he almost couldn’t help but curse.
‘That idiot!’
He had just observed the eggs carefully under the sunlight. He could see that almost all the developing creatures inside had taken proper shape.
They were all trying to break out of their shells. To cause such a commotion at such a perilous time was no different than simply begging for death.
And unfortunately, it was the kind of commotion which would also put him in trouble.
He was so far away from the playground that even with his extremely good eyesight, he couldn’t actually see the man’s specific movements clearly.
All Wen Bei knew was that the man was using all his powers to destroy just a small portion of the uncountless eggs.
If Wen Bei could see the expression on the man’s face, he would have probably run away without looking back.
There was nothing more troublesome than a man hell bent on seeking death.
Unfortunately, he could only see the man standing still after destroying a few of the eggs.
It seemed that he didn’t plan to continue attacking.
Wen Bei continued to watch the changes from the fourth floor. He was curious about what the man was planning to do.
Little did he know that Ji Mingyuan was enduring intense pain at the moment. After destroying just a few of the eggs, his pollution level had suddenly increased by another degree.
It had directly hit 95 which meant that it needed to be compulsorily controlled.
The black ring on his hand issued a harsh warning.
Ji Mingyuan retreated by a few steps forward, holding back his breath.
He was going to blow himself up in the middle of the playground to ensure that all the unhatched larvae would be killed then and there.
The black eagle flying above him, seemed to be aware of its master’s determination to die. It let out a shrill scream and took a flight around the playground in a circle, as if it was reluctant to leave but hesitant to stay.
Eagles are birds with very good eyesight. Thus, it only took Ji Mingyuan’s eagle two circles to find Wen Bei, who was secretly observing from the dormitory building.
Ji Mingyuan, who had the ability to see from the eyes of his eagle, suddenly froze. His eyes widened in disbelief: Was there really a human nearby?
Ji Mingyuan who originally wanted to immediately self-destruct, withdrew his idea, and he looked straight at the dormitory building.
Wen Bei knew that he was about to be exposed when he spotted the black hawk flying around the playground.
He stretched out his hands innocently to indicate that he had no intention of attacking, while also mentally planning an escape route.
He was actually a real person, and he looked very young.
Ji Mingyuan narrowed his eyes.
He would not blow himself up that easily before he was sure whether the young man was a friend or a foe.
So he withdrew the eagle and began walking towards the dormitory building.
But the next moment, he stepped on the spider silk which was all over the ground. Ji Mingyuan had a bad premonition.
The spider eggs, after absorbing the green liquid which had just flowed out of the first batch of eggs that had died tragically, actually succeeded in breaking out of their shells in advance with the nutrition provided by their dead brothers and sisters!
The few spider eggs closest to him pierced their white shells one after another. In order to protect her eggs, the female spider had specially coated them with a layer of spider silk, which also created a little buffer for the broken shells.
Ji Mingyuan immediately started sprinting away.
Unfortunately, the buffer time taken by the larvae to tear apart the protective layer of spider silk was not enough for him to move away. Before he reached the dormitory building, there were already several spider larvae following behind him.
And as he fled, their numbers only grew.
Wen Bei was always paying attention to Ji Mingyuan’s movements. The moment he arrived in front of the dormitory building, Ji Mingyuan reached the first floor and faced him through the huge iron door.
There was a gap of several hundred metres between the two, and dozens of larvae rushed over with him at the same time.
The only iron gate with the highest security in the school was located in the dormitory building, and Wen Bei was not surprised at all that Ji Mingyuan would choose to run over.
He stretched out his hand and began to twist the iron lock.
Ji Mingyuan’s heart sank as he ran faster. Was he locking the door?
Unexpectedly, the next second, the iron door was suddenly opened by Wen Bei at the right moment.
He stretched out his hand from the opening, grabbed Ji Mingyuan’s clothes and pulled him in quickly. At the same time, he used his own weight to close the iron door once again.
At such a critical moment, the larva which was right behind Ji Mingyuan hit the iron gate.
Wen Bei shouted: “What are you doing standing still?! Come here and help me guard the door!”
Ji Mingyuan’s expression was very complicated, but his movements were faster than his consciousness. He quickly pushed over the large table and blocked the iron door.
Giving Wen Bei some time to catch his breath, he locked the big iron lock again.
They pushed out everything that they could to block the door in the dormitory room on the first floor. Thus, they finally managed to block the dozens of bell-faced spiders from breaking the door.
Panting, Wen Bei rested for a while, then turned around and suddenly smiled: “Hello, my name is Wen Bei.”
…
While the other party was assessing him, Wen Bei was also doing the same, feeling slightly surprised in his heart.
The man in front of him was tall and handsome, but his right eye, which had only a black eyeball, ruined his looks and made him look a little more evil.
Butler Rabbit’s words echoed in his mind.
Human beings in this world were polluted, even newborn babies were not spared from this fate. They could be polluted in their mothers’ wombs. There was no human being with zero pollution rate, so everyone fostered some sort of mutations to some extent.
Ordinary people with low levels of pollution would end up having a change in the colour of their hair colour or pupil. People with high levels of pollution would have more obvious body distortions, such as growing an extra hand and several pairs of ears. Anything was possible.
The man in front of him not only had a deep black right eye, but also had some black veins visible around his right eye socket, extending from his right temple to his neck and covered by his clothes.
Ji Mingyuan’s inner surprise was no less astonishing: “Double black…”
He was in a daze.
It had been a long time since he had seen a ‘pure human’ like Wen Bei. Ji Mingyuan couldn’t recall the last time he had seen someone with no trace of infection. He could only remember his companions from his memories before the apocalypse.
The black hair and eyes that he was accustomed to before the apocalypse had now become unique and unattainable.
But how was it possible that there was still someone who has managed to stay uninfected by the pollutants?
The distortion must have occurred somewhere where it could be hidden.
For example, the skin wrapped by his clothes may be hiding some sort of scale-like.
The black hair and black eyes was probably a strange coincidence.
Ji Mingyuan understood it in this way and finally returned to his senses: “Hello, my name is Ji Mingyuan, and I come from the H city base.”
He stared at Wen Bei closely, trying to notice any fluctuations on his face.
Although Wen Bei’s timely opening of the door had already ruled out half of the possibility that he was from the Wanxu Cult, the sudden appearance of a seemingly innocuous human being in such a place was enough to make him wary.
Wen Bei didn’t change his expression. He spoke rather casually: “Oh, I’m the owner of a nearby hotel.”
”What?” Ji Mingyuan suspected for a moment that his pollution level was too high and he was having hallucinations.
It had been five years since the apocalypse began. Even if there was a hotel nearby, it would have been destroyed thoroughly by now.
Wen Bei didn’t explain too much: “You are welcome to come to my hotel as a guest. But now let’s solve the immediate problem first.”
He raised his chin towards the group of spider larvae outside that were eager to come in, showing a slightly troubled expression.
These bell-faced spider larvae had just been born and had not eaten yet, so they were unable to spit out saliva which resembled strong sulfuric acid. Despite the advantage, their low attack power cannot sustain their large numbers.
Moreover, the remaining spider eggs in the playground had gradually begun to break out of their shells. In just a few dozen minutes, there would be hundreds or even thousands of bell-faced spider larvae. At that time, the iron gate was bound to fail in protecting them.
One spider bite could kill both of them.
Wen Bei observed these monsters through a small gap and found that there was a human face under their abdomen, with expressions of tears, anger, or fear, like evil spirits from hell.
Ji Mingyuan glanced at him: “This is a bell-faced spider. Every spider is born with a human head as its nourishment.”
In other words, every face attached to the spiders once belonged to a vibrant student or teacher of the middle school.
Wen Bei felt a little chilly.
”I’m really interested in watching what kind of monster would give birth to such disgusting little things.”
Ji Mingyuan said thoughtfully: “Maybe we’ll get to see it soon.”
Wen Bei’s slightly raised eyes rarely showed any emotions. Now, there was a bit of confusion in that pair of eyes?
Ji Mingyuan took him to the back of the dormitory building: “Before I came here, I originally wanted to find the mother body and die along with it. I’m sure that it’s in this school.”
