Chapter 45 – The Leader of the Base
Wen Bei shook his head. He looked at the man, his eyes still very calm: “I’ll give you the blood you want after we get back to the Hotel.”
The reason was simple— he didn’t want to get hurt outside the Hotel.
Qiu Tin chuckled but did not respond.
Wen Bei couldn’t make up his mind. Just when he thought the man was going to disagree, there was a clanging sound behind him.
Looking back, he saw the Rabbit Butler sweeping the floor, but because his claws were not convenient enough, he broke a glass, resulting in pieces of sharp glass being scattered all over the floor.
Wen Bei’s attention was completely diverted. He rubbed his brows and asked, “When are you returning to the Hotel?”
Ji Mingyuan was the only one left in the hotel, and he was afraid that he would be too busy to handle the functioning of the whole Hotel.
Judging from Captain Lan’s attitude, the matter of the Hotel’s existence seemed to have spread like wildfire in the news circle of the upper echelons of the base. It didn’t matter if such people didn’t dare to leave the base. They could hire mercenaries to buy food that can be brought back.
The Hotel only had a retail area in the corner of the restaurant, and the daily supply was similar to that of the canteen outside the school. The prices were also so low that there was not enough for everyone to grab.
The Rabbit Butler groaned and began to pick up the fragments of glass on the ground with resentment: “That Easter egg is a one-way summon which was why I told you not to crush it unless absolutely necessary. It’s troublesome since the level of the Hotel is too low right now. When we go back, you can upgrade it and solve this problem.”
”What do you mean?” Wen Bei looked confused.
Rabbit Butler: “Once the Hotel is upgraded twice, the new function 【Migration】 will be available.”
Wen Bei’s eyes lit up, and he instinctively felt that this function would become a very important feature of the Hotel: “Tell me about it in detail.”
Rabbit Butler: “After the 【Migration】 function is activated, the Hotel owner can use this function to move the store wherever he goes.”
As it elaborated, its short tail kept shaking in happiness. “Moreover, upgrading the 【Migration】 function will unlock the 【Chain】 option. Then, you can leave marks in different places at, allowing people from different places to enter the Hotel at the same time.”
Wen Bei thought for a moment, and the smile on his face gradually widened: “Can people from another place far away from the Hotel can also come to the Hotel through the mark?”
The mark sounded like a teleportation door stretched across different locations.
The Rabbit Butler nodded, looking like he was really ignorant, and a somewhat arrogant expression appeared on the furry rabbit face.
The next second, Wen Bei held it in his arms and rubbed its rabbit ears hard.
Wen Bei cheered softly, his whole body filled with joy.
It was the first time that the Rabbit Butler was treated like a pet and had its fur stroked by humans. I was actually a little obsessed with it. Its eyes narrowed and its tail shook unconsciously.
Then it felt a chill suddenly rushing up the top of its head.
The Rabbit Butler was so scared that its fur stood on end. It looked up and found Qiu Tin looking at him with a smile, without a trace of warmth in his eyes.
The Rabbit Butler was startled. It shook its paws silently, struggled to jump off Wen Bei, and continued to pick up the glass fragments on the ground.
It looked like a pitiful little thing that had been frightened.
Wen Bei looked up at Qiu Tin suspiciously. The man turned his head away and looked at the scenery outside the window. His profile was very cold, as if he had not seen anything just now.
The Rabbit Butler was still very afraid of Qiu Tin. He rubbed the Rabbit’s head and stated, “I’m going to sleep.”
After saying that, he went straight to his room.
The neighborhood they were living in was a wealthy area before the end of the world. The houses were large and beautifully decorated. Wen Bei sighed in relief that he finally didn’t have to share a room with Qiu Tin.
He sat on the bed, blowing his wet hair, thinking about the meeting with the leader of the base scheduled for the next day.
After running around all day, Wen Bei was extremely tired. With his hair still half dry, he couldn’t help but squint his eyes and start yawning. Tiny tears fell on his curled eyelashes and were quickly rubbed away.
Wen Bei rubbed himself against the soft bed and fell asleep smelling a somewhat unfamiliar fragrance.
Maybe because it was an unfamiliar environment, he still couldn’t sleep well even though the bed was very soft.
In a daze, he seemed to feel a dark shadow approaching, slowly drying the wet ends of his hair. But before he could open his eyes, his limbs suddenly froze, making him unable to move, as if he was a trapped prey waiting to be slaughtered, or as if he was undergoing sleep paralysis. His slender fingers were spread apart, sinking deep into the quilt as if he was forced to interlock with someone’s fingers.
The black hair was obediently pressed against the fair face, the nose tip was a little red with the eyes closed, and the cat ears that had not yet disappeared trembled in grievance, as they were touched by the rough palm.
The shaking became even worse…
…
When Wen Bei woke up the next day, still a little dazed. The illusion of his cat ears being bullied in his dream yesterday seemed to still exist. He touched it and the furry feeling disappeared.
Wen Bei sat up with a somersault and looked in the mirror. As expected, he discovered that his disguise had failed and he had changed back to his original self.
‘Was last night really just a dream?’
Wen Bei smoothed his slightly curly black hair, looked at the standing little hairs, and his heart gradually calmed down.
‘Just a dream.’
He stayed in the bathroom for a while before coming out. As soon as he came out, he found the Rabbit Butler making breakfast.
The rice in that pot of porridge was all blue. He didn’t know what was added to make it sticky.
Rabbit Butler: “Would you like some sticky porridge?”
Wen Bei: “…No need.”
He picked up a piece of compressed biscuit and took a bite with some water.
He would rather eat the tasteless foods than touch the weird mutated foods in the apocalypse.
After breakfast, they soon met up with Captain Lan, and with him were the leaders of other lawful forces.
They all stood outside the door, looking at Wen Bei with surprise.
”Surprisingly, he has black hair and black eyes, and his pollution level seems to be very low.”
“It feels like it’s even less polluted than my sister-in-law’s newborn baby.”
”Is that hotel really that magical? If I go there often, can I return to my original state?”
”Distortion is fixed like your ability. It will not recover even if the pollution level is reduced.” Captain Lan glanced at the person who had just spoken.
Although they were all at the same level, he looked particularly prestigious standing among those people.
The person who had just spoken was Xuan Yi. His fiery red hair stood up slightly, as hot as a real flame, but it could not burn anything.
Xuan Yi smiled, extended his hand to Wen Bei, and introduced himself.
Wen Bei shook it quickly and then retracted his hand, nodding slightly: “Hello.”
His eyes were very calm and did not change after seeing many high-level polluters at once.
Xuan Yi admired it secretly in his heart and sighed that it was indeed unusual.
Everyone present were carefully selected to become the leaders of the Lawful Army. They maintain the order of the base and also serve as a bottom line guarantee.
Xuan Yi and Captain Lan quickly took Wen Bei to the base leader’s office. Unlike what he had imagined, it was just an ordinary-looking office building.
The floor where the leader’s office is situated is not the highest one, but the sixth floor which is the most central one.
Xuan Yi knocked on the door, and an old voice came from inside, inviting him to come in.
While in the elevator, Wen Bei had thought of many possibilities, but he never expected that when he opened the door, there would be a seemingly ordinary old man inside.
He was about sixty years old, sitting there in a black coat. When he saw him entering, he stood up and moved in a very agile manner.
Only his feet were deformed, growing something like tree trunks.
The leader smiled, the wrinkles at the corners of his eyes showing the traces of time: “Are you surprised that I’m an ordinary person?”
Wen Bei paused: “Unexpected, but not surprising.”
The base leader made tea for him, using the normal pre-apocalyptic tea leaves that he himself was reluctant to drink, and waved his hand to signal others to leave.
Captain Lan was worried, and the big and strong-looking Xuan Yi also wanted to stay, but was stopped by a look, and finally both of them left.
Wen Bei didn’t hesitate and started drinking the tea. He noticed the nervousness of the soldiers, so he asked Qiu Tin to leave as well.
The man rarely disagreed with him and just walked away.
There were only two ordinary people without any special abilities left in the room, and the atmosphere became a little more peaceful.
Leader: “Why not?”
He seemed easy to talk to, and didn’t seem like the leader of a large base. Instead, there was an inexplicable sense of familiarity during the conversation.
Wen Bei: “I don’t quite approve of the strict requirements at your base for dealing with polluters.”
He had already spoken it very tactfully.
The leader of the base was not angry, but asked openly: “Are you referring to the Faraway Travelers?”
There was a hint of contemplation in his eyes. “Speaking of which, today is the day that the travelers are leaving the base. Under special circumstances, I will go to see them off and participate in the ceremony.”
Wen Bei had some guesses in his mind, but he still asked: “What do you mean by special circumstances?”
”When there are polluters with a pollution level of over ninety-five.”
Wen Bei: “Even if that person has done nothing wrong, and only because his pollution level reached 95, is it necessary to do this?”
He didn’t demand for an answer, instead it was asked calmly.
The problem had been bothering him for a long time.
Inexplicably, he remembered the slogan he saw when he first entered the base – 【The overall interests of mankind are supreme.】
The slogan next to that sentence is 【Don’t be afraid of death】. If it were in the past, he would have just thought that it was ridiculous. Survival is the instinct of all living things, and humans are no exception.
But in the present environment, the sentence has become a slogan, something that stabilizes people’s hearts.
The leader was silent for a moment. He took a sip of tea and only took one sip: “Do you think it’s cruel?”
Wen Bei answered honestly: “I don’t know.”
He was not qualified to judge, he just wanted to see the attitude of the base leader.
The leader smiled and said, “When there was no such rule, the base tried to take in polluters whose pollution levels exceeded the standard several times. They all made great contributions to the base, but when they were completely polluted and turned into filth, they killed the people they had once protected with their own hands.”
”I was the first to propose this idea, which was protested by all the polluters. As long as they are polluters, there will be a day when the pollution level exceeds the standard, so they went on a strike collectively to protect their future. Once the polluters went on strike, the base that had just been built was paralyzed. Many ordinary people also stood on the side of the polluters to help protest.”
Wen Bei blinked: “And then?”
Leader: “Unfortunately, on the first day of the protest, a polluter with a pollution level of over 95 believed in a kind of unknown meat that was rumored to reduce pollution. He cooked soup at home and ate it, which caused serious pollution and turned him into filth.”
”An orphanage near his home had just been built a few days ago. On that day, he bit dozens of children and staff members to death. The blood and flesh almost covered the walls of the orphanage.”
Wen Bei was silent for a moment. Even though he couldn’t see the scene, he could feel the despair just by imagining it.
