Chapter 68 – The People of the Safe Zone
Bo Ji was stunned for a moment, as if he was thinking about his words, but also as if he was thinking nothing.
Wen Bei glanced at the white fox that was grooming his fur not far away: “What do you think of him?”
Bo Ji’s expression became complicated: “Since he can speak human language, it means that he still has the rationality of a human being. This world has become so chaotic, I don’t find it strange if magical things happen again.”
Of course, what he trusted was not the White Fox, but Wen Bei and his hotel.
Since he had chosen to adopt the white fox, there must be a way to control him.
The pollution level that everyone feared could be taken care of in the hotel.
Wen Bei chuckled.
Magical, indeed.
Moreover, this white fox seemed to be involved with the people of Holy Church.
They couldn’t let him leave that easily.
”Do you know Su Wu?” Wen Bei mentioned it casually.
Bo Ji frowned and said, “I seem to have some impression of him. Do you want to know more about him?”
Wen Bei nodded: “Yeah.”
”I can help you check it.” Bo Ji pushed his glasses. “In exchange, next time you develop a new recipe, can you let me be the first to taste and study it?”
”Okay.” Wen Bei agreed readily.
They stayed there for a while and then quickly continued on their way.
They were still about a day and a half away from the safe zone, but they raced against time and managed to shorten the time to just one day.
The moment he saw the safe zone, Wen Bei almost didn’t recognize it.
There is a small plaque with Area 41 written on it, and behind it is a safe zone that could accommodate thousands of people.
And A’Luo was extremely excited. As soon as he got out of the car, he rushed to the front and banged on the alarm.
This safe zone is located in a small community. Unlike the base, it does not have a pollution isolation cover, so they can only live underground in the community.
There are two types of alarms: one is a reminder for when an outsider is about to enter, and the other is a danger alarm warning about foreign invasion.
A’Luo pressed the first one.
Soon, a dark object came up and scanned the area twice as if to identify the person. A voice came from inside: “Is it Luo?”
A’Luo was so excited that he stuttered: “Yes, it’s me, Uncle Chen, please open the door for us.”
Uncle Chen is the person who usually manages the entrance to the safe zone.
There was a brief silence on the other side, and then the voice sounded again: “What is your pollution value? Prove it first.”
Facing his companions who had finally returned from the contaminated area, his tone was a little harsh, but no one present objected.
Wen Bei hid the white fox and told him to treat himself as a stuffed doll and not to move.
Otherwise, even ten more mouths would not be able to explain it.
Qiu Tin glanced at the white fox, the corners of his mouth curled up, with a hint of sarcasm flashing across his face.
Su Wu: ???
The man put his hand directly on Wen Bei’s waist and whispered something in a low voice. The young man acquiesced to his action.
The two people stood very close to each other, and they looked inexplicably well-matched just from the back.
The white fox scratched the dermis underneath with its claws as if it was itchy, and its stomach felt indescribably full.
Wen Bei didn’t notice the undercurrent behind him. He just wanted to use Qiu Tin’s special ability to fool the pollution detection of the entrance.
Sure enough, with the help of the man, things went very smoothly.
Qiu Tin asked in a low voice: “How is it?”
Wen Bei looked up and said, “Very convenient.”
The two people seemed to be playing a riddle, and Bo Ji could not understand it, but he seemed to see a dog’s tail swinging wildly behind Qiu Tin, as if a loyal German Shepherd was waiting for its owner’s praise.
He rubbed his eyes again and the illusion disappeared.
Bo Ji looked dazed.
After everyone passed the test, A’Luo couldn’t wait to speak again: “Uncle Chen, I found the lost batch of emergency supplies!”
His voice was loud and proud.
”What!?”
A series of clanging sounds came from inside, and then the door leading to the underground safe opened without hesitation.
The tunnel is quite narrow, and cars must drive in one after the other to enter.
Uncle Chen ran out of the small guardhouse. He didn’t bother to ask about the whereabouts of the other people who went out with him. His first reaction was to climb onto the car: “Is it really food?!”
The old man’s cheeks were sunken due to hunger, and his eyeballs looked strange because there was no flesh on his cheeks. When he stared at people, there was something inexplicably creepy.
Wen Bei opened one of the carriages and showed him the multi-grain cakes: “It’s real. It’s enough for more than a thousand people to survive for a while.”
The multi-grain cakes are added with substances that could make one feel full, and only three pieces a day are enough.
Moreover, a piece of multigrain cake is only half the size of a palm, which is small and easy to store. A truck can be filled with tens of thousands of multi-grain cakes.
The safe zone was very small, and as soon as they drove the car in, they were immediately surrounded by onlookers.
Many people looked at them with greedy eyes, as if, if they relaxed, they would pounce on them and bite them like primitive beasts.
Uncle Chen wiped the tears from his eyes and said, “Good, good child.”
He patted A’Luo with his dry hands.
A’Luo’s face was full of pride and joy. The scene was almost the same as he had imagined. He became the hero of the safe zone.
He didn’t even have time to change his clothes which were stained with filth and blood, and began to look for his family among the crowd.
And wherever his eyes moved, several adults inexplicably avoided his sight, the expressions on their faces changed from greed to guilt, and some even stepped back, trying to leave the crowd.
A’Luo was too excited to notice it, but Wen Bei, who was very sensitive to the changes in human emotions, saw it.
He frowned and memorized the appearance of those people.
The crowd of onlookers grew larger and larger, but the brother and sister still did not show up.
Given their caring nature, they should have been the first to rush out.
A’Luo’s expression began to become a little dazed, his fingers unconsciously curled up because of worry, and his heart instinctively began to escape, pretending to be indifferent: “My brother is too careless, doesn’t he know that I returned safely?”
There were only a thousand people in the safe zone, so news spread quickly.
His words seemed inexplicably pale at this moment.
Uncle Chen couldn’t bear to watch it anymore, so he walked over and said, “A’Luo, you…you should go back and take a look first. I’ll watch over here.”
A’Luo was stunned. No matter how dumb he was, he felt something was wrong. His expression became ferocious. “Uncle Chen, what do you mean? Are my brother and sister in trouble?”
Uncle Chen stopped talking.
A’Luo pushed him away and rushed in the other direction.
He had never run so fast in his life. He was so frightened that his breathing and heartbeat seemed to stop.
The intense running and palpitations made his heart begin to ache, but this did not prevent him from rushing to “home”.
It is called a home, but in fact this place is just surrounded by iron sheets with some basins and the most basic daily necessities were placed inside. After the three of them lay down together, there was not much space to move.
Underground, most people survived like this. The rooms next to them were surrounded by iron sheets and they were so close to each other that they could smell each other’s farts. It was no different from sleeping in a dormitory.
They stayed in such a harsh environment for five years.
In the past, every time he came home from work at the mutant sugarcane field, his sister would hide in the iron sheet and welcome them with a smile. But this time, when he opened the door that was so simple that it was almost useless, he saw nothing.
The contents inside were also emptied, all the useful items were gone, only some small odds and ends were left.
When Wen Bei followed him, he could only see his hunched back kneeling on the ground.
He suddenly felt something was wrong.
The neighbor leaned over and looked over, and said cautiously: “Xiao Luo, accidents in the apocalypse are always…”
”Where are they?” A terrifyingly calm voice came from A’Luo, and then it became hysterical. “I’m asking you, where are they?!”
A’Luo’s eyes were red, and his aura became extremely fierce. He grabbed his neighbor’s shoulders forcefully.
The neighbor was shaken to the point of vomiting, but she didn’t dare to offend the now insane A’Luo, so she trembled and said, “Dead…dead.”
After the first sentence came out, the rest went much more smoothly.
The woman raised her voice, “Dead! They’re dead. You came too late. They died yesterday. My husband helped me throw the bodies away. Otherwise, those crazy people would have eaten them!”
”What do you mean?” A’Luo slowly put down his hand, but his eyes were like a wolf that had just grown up, staring at her, “What happened?”
It was the first time Wen Bei saw A’Luo’s expression. He did not express any opinion, but just stood behind him and looked at the woman.
He was worried that A’Luo would suddenly go crazy, but fortunately he had not completely lost his sanity. Even though he pinched his palms until they were almost bleeding, he did not continue to hold the woman.
The woman’s shoulders ached, and she spoke with lingering fear: “Your sister had a fever three days ago.”
A’Luo interrupted her abruptly: “There is medicine! There should be medicine in the safe zone!”
In order to prevent problems with the distribution of supplies, medicines in the safe zone are managed centrally, and only those who are sick could get the medicine.
Woman: “There were medicines, but there were only two fever-reducing pills left. Unfortunately, your brother was about to get them when they were taken away.”
There are two pills, but the other party is unwilling to give up one of them. The lives of relatives are at stake, and neither party could be morally rational.
”Your brother had a fight with another family over the medicine, and he took one of the pills. Afterwards, that family called a few people, beat your brother up, took the medicine away, and also stole his coat.”
In this weather, taking away clothes is almost as bad as losing your life.
Woman: “Your brother fainted in a corner and was not found until the next day. When he was found…his body was already frozen stiff.”
His sister, who had no medicine and no one to take care of her, naturally did not survive the night.
When the woman finished speaking, she didn’t even dare to look up at A’Luo’s expression.
At the moment, he looked so scary, as if he was going to kill everyone.
The woman couldn’t help but said, “It’s not that we don’t want to help, but there are only my husband and I in our family. If something happens to one of us, the other one won’t be able to survive.”
When his brother was beaten, many people nearby actually knew about it, but they all chose to cover their ears silently. If she didn’t have a little conscience, no one would even come to tell A’Luo about it.
The woman was a little worried: “Some people in the safe zone are going crazy. They even said they wanted to eat people yesterday. They wanted to cook and eat those who died of cold and starvation. At least my husband helped you save the bodies of your brother and sister. You can’t repay kindness with hatred.”
A’Luo looked up at her, his voice becoming hoarse: “Is there any difference between being eaten by people and being eaten by the filth outside?”
His eyes were red, but the hostility on his face did not diminish in the slightest.
The woman was stunned by the question. After a long while, she could only say one sentence: “Anyway, this matter has nothing to do with us. You should seek revenge on them.”
She regretted coming here, but looking at A’Luo’s appearance at this moment, she felt a little pity for him.
A’Luo naturally knew that this matter had nothing to do with her, and he didn’t mean to make things difficult for her, but at this moment, his rationality was almost burned to the end, and his eyes were bloodshot.
The only words that kept repeating in his roaring brain were the woman’s words.
His heart felt like a piece of flesh had been torn off alive, and it was painfully cold when the wind blew.
He almost risked his life to bring back the supplies. What kind of people is he protecting?
