- Chapter 10 - The Slave Trader’s Scheme
“What? You’re telling me that the ‘example product’ snatched by the nobles has ended up in this town?”
“Yeah. That’s right.”
For some reason, after getting a report from one of his guys—one whose arm was wrapped in bandages and who stubbornly wouldn’t explain what happened—a man sat in a dim warehouse, deep in thought.
His name is Dogora. He runs one of the lower branches of the illegal slave-trading outfit known as the “Titans.” On the surface, his job is to manage the shops here in Gast, but behind that, he makes his fortune by doing unspeakable things like kidnapping and lending money at sky-high interest rates.
Of course, when you keep pulling off such shady deals, it isn’t long before the nobles and the guards—those who keep order—start paying attention. Even so, he’s managed to get by by cutting loose any weak subordinates like a lizard drops its tail. That is, until about three years ago when a massive “purge” wiped out most of his men and cost him a fortune. He was even on the brink of being promoted to one of the Titans’ top brass, but that plan fell through, and he had to start all over again.
“So, what’s the status of that ‘product’ now?”
“It seems she’s with the Ranger Barony.”
“Ranger, Ranger… I’ve never heard of that.”
“Well, it’s the tale of a poor noble who can’t even use magic.”
“Hmm… I see,” Dogora mused. You’d wonder what a noble who can’t do magic would do in case of a revolt—but if he’s just like a village head, it makes some sense. In a proper town, the leader is usually a noble relative, but in a small village, it’s common for an ordinary commoner with no real power to serve as the organizer.
“If that’s the case, then this is our chance.”
The nobles have been ramping up their crackdowns year after year, but they’re not just going to sit back and let things happen. The fighting force they lost three years ago has almost been replaced, and they’ve got a few stronger pawns now. Of course, a full-on clash with them would be bad news—but a lowly noble like them can be easily crushed.
By proving our strength, we can make those ambitious nobles think it’s more profitable to use us rather than crush us outright. We build our underground connections and secure our base. That’s Dogora’s goal.
And when it comes to showing force, the Ranger family is a perfect target. They’re not so important that the nobles would fuss if they disappeared, yet they can prove they have the power to crush a noble house without causing too much damage.
“And if we can also take back the ‘product’ in the process, that’d be perfect. That was one heck of a good find.”
Dogora remembered the girl from the Ranger family—Tilti. She was the daughter that the nobles had first been ordered to kill (they even planned to kill her mother), but since she was pretty and even the noble who ordered it never mentioned his own daughter, they thought, “Why not just sell her off for cash?”
She had no family, and no one recognized her, but she looked decent enough and was expected to become a beauty someday. There’s no doubt she’d fetch a good price, and no one would be able to trace her.
Of course, right after they enslaved her, a purge from the nobles began, and they couldn’t even care for her properly—they left her without food. But nobody ever expected that the nobles would end up adopting her.
“So, what’s the situation with the Ranger family now?”
“It looks like they’ve come here to buy a sword for their son. Once they get it, they’ll head back to their lands.”
“I see… Alright, I’ve made up my mind!”
Dogora mentally pieced together his subordinate’s report and stood up with a defiant smile.
“Gather your men right away—we’re going to crush the Ranger family!”
“Got it. By the way, when are we striking?”
“We’ll wait until they leave town and the streets empty out. On the first hit, we’ll smash their carriage, surround them with our guys, and wipe everyone out.”
“But if we smash the carriage, the ‘product’ might get killed in the overturned wreck!”
“If that happens, too bad—we’ll just say they were unlucky. Besides, make sure to pay off the guards so we don’t get tangled up with the Marquis’s people. We don’t want any bad run-ins on the road.”
“Understood.”
With the plan set, his men started moving. Watching them leave, Dogora smirked to himself.
“I don’t really hold a grudge against the Ranger family, but you all better curse your bad luck for catching our eye.”
And so, as the shadows of doom began to move in on the Ranger family—Sold and the rest of them—a dark, ominous scheme was set in motion.
