- Chapter 19 - The Sisters at That Time
“Tilti… Sold, you’re amazing!”
“That means, big brother, you won? Really!?”
While Sold was fighting in the dungeon with Like and the others, at the marquis house, Siluria watched the battle using her Clairvoyance magic and shared the news with Tilti.
The two brothers had left without telling their sisters, but the girls were not so slow-witted as to be fooled by that. Siluria, watching the fight with anxious eyes, smiled softly.
“It’s okay. We won.”
“Really?! Oh, I’m so glad!”
Seeing Tilti relax and breathe a sigh of relief made me smile; she truly loves her big brother. Siluria, who looked at Tilti like a little sister even though they were almost the same age, tilted her head in confusion.
“Really. The dragon was split in two.”
“The dragon? Wow, big brother, you are getting more and more amazing…”
Tilti spoke with sparkling eyes as if talking to herself, though Siluria thought she might not really understand the full meaning of slaying a dragon. Even with magic, few people in the world can defeat a dragon. And yet, Sold defeated it without magic—a feat that is surely a first in history.
Siluria thought to herself,
(It’s hard to believe that wasn’t magic. But he truly has no magic power, and there was no sign of a spell… I don’t know, what was that?)
Siluria’s mind raced with thoughts, trying to understand how a sword technique could freeze an object or make flames burst forth. Even though she is not a scholar, no matter how hard she thought, she could not find the answer. In a way, she even felt that it was convenient that no body was left behind, because without evidence, any truth would sound like nonsense.
Like’s goal was to lead the dungeon conquest himself so that he could raise his influence in the marquis family and show that he was the next head. By doing so, he planned to win over the neutral retainers who currently watched and to remove those greedy for power.
Even without slaying the dragon, his plan would be achieved, so Sold’s strength would be revealed later. He is a very important trump card for Like—a key “joker” who must not be taken away by someone else before Like has secured his base.
(What a foolish big brother. If he used me, things would go much more smoothly.)
Unlike Like, who had no magic talent, Siluria did have magic power. If Like had used Siluria as a tool to show his strength earlier, they might not have suffered so much trouble. But he was selfish and did not want to involve his little sister in this petty political struggle. Still, Siluria did not want to be protected all the time either.
“Siluria, I have a favor to ask.”
“Hmm, what is it?”
“Please teach me more magic. I want to become strong enough so that I am not a burden on big brother!”
Tilti, with a determined look, pleaded in earnest, much like Siluria had thought. Siluria, finding her innocent plea even more endearing, gently patted her small head.
“Hey… Siluria, I’m serious!”
“I know. Let’s become strong together.”
“Ah… yes!”
Even though the two brothers were in a master-servant relationship, I sometimes worry that they trust outsiders too easily. But Siluria thought that was very cute, and she felt it was very convenient.
(If I get closer to her like this, then even Sold—who is very much in love with his little sister—won’t betray big brother. And if needed, I might even persuade big brother to consider an engagement with Sold…)
If Sold ever learned of these thoughts, he might think, “Even though she’s only nine… as expected of the sister of that scheming, bespectacled guy,” but luckily, this idea stayed locked in her heart and was known to no one.
However, no matter how capable Siluria is, she is still a child. She uses magic to watch over the actions of her older brothers, Like and Sold, and her mind is full of thoughts about the future and how to strengthen her ties with Tilti and Sold. Everything else is neglected. She did not yet fully understand that the “enemy” Like sees is within our own family.
“Miss Siluria, Miss Tilti, your tea is ready.”
“Thank you.”
A maid entered the room where the two of them stayed. Siluria, who was not especially close to the maid but was not hostile either, answered in a simple voice without doubt. Together, Tilti and Siluria took a sip of the tea—and then quickly realized something was wrong.
“Ugh—cough!”
I could tell by the strange taste that something was off. Siluria immediately spat it out, but the part she had already swallowed could not be recovered. A strong drowsiness and dizziness overcame her, making it very hard for her to stay awake.
Of course, Tilti, who had drunk the tea without caution, could not fight it off either, and she had already collapsed and fallen asleep.
(A sleeping potion… one so strong it even passes through antidote magic…!)
When I looked up, the maid who had brought the tea was smiling happily, though her smile was twisted at the mouth.
If one had watched closely, one would have noticed many odd things before she even drank the tea. For example, she brought tea at an unusually early time before dinner, even though no one had asked for it. Also, there was a big cloth bag under the cart that brought the tea.
But now it was too late. Although I thought about doing something, Siluria did not have the quick judgment needed to act in that moment.
(I’m sorry… big brother…)
Siluria reached her limit and lost consciousness. The maid quickly hid both her and Tilti in a large cloth bag and left the room without a word.
And so, the two of them were kidnapped by someone who had guided them away.
Almost at the same time, I heard a distant voice.
“Tilti?”
Sold sensed something and looked up from far away.
