- Chapter 9 - Touring the Harbor Town
After leaving the blacksmith’s, my dad, Tilti, and I spent a few days exploring the town of Gast while we waited for our sword to be finished.
For some reason, once we got out of the shop, Tilti seemed a bit sulky.
“Seriously, big brother, I think you’re being too soft on that kid! She never even changed the way she talks to you in the end!”
“Ah… Well, as long as her skills are good, it’s fine. I don’t really know about her, though.”
Our family may be nobles, but in the Ranger Barony we have one of the lowest ranks—a barony that’s almost like common folk.
Tilti learned proper manners, and maybe one day I’ll have to join high society too… but honestly, we hardly ever get invited anywhere. We’re just filling numbers.
Because of that, I never really cared much about the way Frey talked or anything like that.
Then again, can a kid really do blacksmith work? I have my doubts—but hey, we’re in a world with magic, so things tend to work out. I mean, I can swing a sword without any magic, so why not?
“Big brother, you’re my big brother—you can’t just go off anywhere without me!”
“Uh, yeah? I mean, I’m not going anywhere…”
I tilted my head, confused about what Tilti was fussing about. My dad murmured something sentimental like, “I guess blood really is thicker than water…”
What the heck is he talking about?
“Anyway, let’s grab something to eat. I heard the seafood here is the best in the world.”
“Really? Does dad know a good place?”
“Nah, I don’t. This kind of thing only comes once in a lifetime—you just go with your gut.”
I chuckled at his laid-back attitude. Even though our barony hardly serves any real seafood, I was genuinely excited to try something I never had in our lands, so Tilti and I wandered around the town, buzzing with anticipation.
Before long, my dad led us into a restaurant, exclaiming, “This is it!” as we stepped inside—only to be greeted immediately by a burst of screams.
“Ewwww! What the heck is this little brat doing… Ahhh!! It’s breaking!”
“This is my shop… dine and dash. Theft. Unforgivable!”
“Hey, you’re just a customer—this isn’t even your shop…”
“Take that!”
“Aaaahhh!!”
There was a loud crack—a sound probably too intense for Tilti. It turned out the culprit was a little girl with green hair tied in a ponytail, not much older than me or Tilti. Dressed in a loose shirt and a short skirt, she was literally wrestling a huge, bear-like man to the ground. It was a scene straight out of a movie.
From the looks of it, that guy was trying to pull a dine-and-dash… or something like that.
But then…
“I swear I’ve seen her somewhere before… this kid…”
I thought. Wait, what? If I have that strong a feeling of déjà vu, she must have been in the game… I mean, if an important character is that cute, you wouldn’t forget her, right? Hmmm.
“Mmm.”
As I was lost in thought, the girl looked our way. For a moment, it was as if time stopped—we just stared at each other. Then, without warning, she kicked the man at her feet into the far corner of the shop.
“Whoa!?”
She said in a calm yet firm tone,
“Welcome. You’re here. Sit down.”
“Uh, okay…”
We’d just witnessed something pretty violent, so my dad, suddenly speaking in polite tones, quickly sat at a nearby table.
I ended up taking Tilti’s hand and sitting next to him.
“I really picked the wrong place. I should have done more research on this place,” my dad sighed.
“But isn’t choosing a place just a once-in-a-lifetime chance?” Tilti piped up.
I couldn’t help but tease my dad for flipping his words so quickly.
Soon enough, a proper waitress—who clearly looked the part—approached us.
“I’m sorry for all the noise as soon as you arrived. This meal is on the house.”
“Thank you… Is this common here?”
“Well, yes. Lately, the streets have been pretty rough.”
While nibbling on some complimentary nuts, I asked, and she replied in a matter-of-fact way.
This town thrives on trade. Many foreigners and folks from far-off places come here, and the lure of money attracts even criminals. So, these kinds of incidents do happen.
And to make matters worse, with one of the marquis families currently in a bit of a domestic tiff and supposedly cracking down on crime, things have gotten even worse. What a mess.
“But you know, in times like these, that kid usually catches the thieves. Even if they have no money, you can get most of it back if you strip them of everything.”
“R-really?”
Yeah, typical of a feudal society—stealing someone’s entire outfit doesn’t usually get you in trouble.
I wondered if this was good for Tilti’s education… or maybe in this world it’s better to know about these things? Who knows?
“My story?”
“Oh, it’s about Siluria. Yeah, we’re telling her that Siluria isn’t just a violent kid.”
That was said by a girl who seemed completely uninterested, with a faraway, blank look on her face. Her name is Siluria, apparently.
Siluria, Siluria… Oh, I remember now! This is the kid from the game who explains the battle system and the school facilities at the very start—she’s known as the Tutorial Girl.
I had forgotten about her after the tutorial, but I never thought I’d run into her here.
“Uh, what?”
“Hm, what’s wrong?”
“Ah, nothing.”
Now that I think about it, this kid is supposed to guide the heroine at the noble academy. So she must be a noble herself, right?
Yet she looks so plain—like a commoner. Is she in disguise? Or is she just a spitting image of someone else?
And if she is in disguise, maybe she’s from the Marquis Hartmann household…?
Could it be that she is the little sister of that important character we heard about?
That key character whose name was barely mentioned but was hinted at in a major event?
“Well, never mind.”
Even if that were true, there’s no need to expose her secret or get involved with those guys chasing that important character.
For now, I’ll just pretend I don’t know and enjoy the meal.
I turned to Siluria and asked,
“Miss Siluria? It’s our first time here—do you have any recommendations?”
She replied in a very flat, almost monotone way,
“Just call me Siluria. I recommend the battle conger eel meunière and the seafood salad. They’re delicious—I eat them every day.”
Her style of speaking was odd—she just rattled off a few words with no expression—but you could tell she meant it.
It was one of those weird moments where something is both confusing and clear at the same time. I smiled wryly and turned back to the waitress.
“Then, we’ll have that. What about Tilti?”
“I want the same as my brother!”
“Alright, got it. And dad?”
“Then I’ll have that too.”
“Alright, then everyone gets the same thing.”
My dad, still looking a bit shaken by Siluria’s earlier outburst, let me handle the order.
After that, we just waited for our food. I thought about chatting a bit more with Siluria—until I felt an unsettling gaze coming from a man who had just been kicked aside earlier for trying to dine and dash.
“…?”
I was confused. I could understand if Siluria was angry with him, but why was he staring at us?
No… It felt like he wasn’t looking at me, but at Tilti…?
“Big brother, is something wrong?” Tilti asked.
“No, nothing. I’m just looking forward to the food.”
“Okay!”
Even though I had a strange feeling in my chest, I decided to ignore that gaze and just enjoy the meal.
