Chapter 2 – Entering the Base
After realizing that she couldn’t get rid of the alien, Talia said with a serious expression: “It’s too fast!”
The armored vehicle was shaking and bumping on the gravel road, but the alien was only getting closer and closer. In a blink of an eye, it was only a dozen meters away from the rear of the vehicle and would soon catch up with them.
Talia carefully observed the alien species chasing them from behind the car—
The degree of body alienation is only about 30%.
“Our weapons can deal with a Class C infected alien species. Get ready, open the protective door, and attack head-on!” Talia took a deep breath and pulled the safety pin.
They were just a search team that came out to collect supplies for the base. The areas they entered and exited were all safe zones that had been cleared by the army. Under normal circumstances, there was no possibility of encountering alien species, and the weapons they were equipped with were naturally inferior to those military weapons.
But this is just a C-level alien, they should be able to repel it.
Talia’s eyes swept over the young man who was closest to the door. The young man’s face was obviously pale. Her Alpha instinct made her involuntarily pay attention to the frightened Omega.
She tried to soften her tense tone: “It’s too dangerous here, switch your seat.”
Jian Ning nodded and changed his position obediently.
Several people in the car raised their weapons, looked solemn, and were ready at the rear of the car.
As soon as the protective door opened, the black muzzles of guns immediately aimed at the fast-moving alien behind the car, and bullets shot out of the gun barrels like lightning.
The alien’s long and slender neck was very flexible, swaying left and right to avoid the bullets, but its body seemed much slower.
The bullets hit its limbs and torso one by one. The powerful impact force quickly exploded inside the alien’s body. Explosions rang out one after another, and blood and flesh splattered. Black, sticky, and smelly blood scattered all over the ground. The alien stopped moving and let out a sharp and painful hiss.
Before everyone could breathe a sigh of relief, new flesh and blood began to grow on the broken parts that were blown apart. Bubble-like tumors bulged out on the surface of the black and red flesh, and it jumped like a living thing.
The sarcoma expanded at an alarming rate, like a layer of bubble glue, gradually growing into a new limb with an uneven surface.
The body that had maintained its human form not long ago seemed to have finally revealed its ugly and terrifying true appearance.
Talia’s pupils shrank: “Oh no! It’s B-level…”
She made a wrong judgement.
The degree of alienation of this alien species is at least 50%, and their weapons… cannot cause any fatal damage to it at all!
Jian Ning was sitting in the innermost seat. Through the backs of several people, he could still see the disgusting scene behind the car that made her sanity level drop wildly. His empty stomach churned.
He felt like vomiting.
The alien characteristics of the alien species are different, but no matter how long it takes, Jian Ning still finds it hard to accept that these ghost things actually belong to the same species as he is now.
“…We’re going to die. We’re all going to die here!” someone muttered absentmindedly.
Everyone looked at the alien that was still expanding in size. After confirming that it was a B-level alien species, a feeling of despair spread in the carriage.
Talia had never encountered such a difficult situation before. Cold sweat rolled down her forehead. At this moment, she heard the young man behind her say softly: “Try to attack its neck. The neck may be its weak point.”
The young man’s tone was calm, yet he had an inexplicable ability to convince people.
Without time to think, Talia calmed down and took a deep breath: “Focus on the attack!”
The others were a little hesitant. No one knew if they launched another attack, this alien would go completely berserk.
But when he looked up, the alien had regained its ability to move. Its newly grown body was crawling on the ground, rapidly chasing after the armored vehicle that had distanced itself from it, with no intention of giving up.
A few people could only grit their teeth and shoot.
The alien’s slender neck was very flexible, but it’s increasingly enlarged body became a burden at this time, and its dodging movements were also restrained. Dense bullets came towards it, and soon, a bullet hit the junction of its long neck and body.
With the sound of a bullet explosion, the alien’s body paused. Before it could make a sound, its slender neck suddenly broke off at the root, and fell heavily to the ground along with its head.
The black and red flesh that had just grown on the body also quickly turned gray at a speed visible to the naked eye.
Everything happened too suddenly.
“Is it dead just like that?” someone asked with uncertainty.
Of course not.
Jian Ning glanced behind the car and after getting some distance, the motionless alien creature gradually shrank in his sight.
This level of damage would only temporarily render the aliens incapable of movement. To kill them completely, they would have to be blown into a pile of meat paste or burned into ashes.
Or……
Recalling the bloody scene that he accidentally saw one time, the sharp wailing of the alien species seemed to linger in his ears for a long time again.
Jian Ning shuddered.
He had seen humans who were more perverted than aliens, slicing up alien species in a cruel way.
“Go back and report it, and let the extermination team come and deal with it.” Talia knew more about the situation of the aliens than anyone else in the car, and she did not completely relax.
“We have to drive faster.”
Thinking of the reminder just now, Talia turned her head and looked at the young man in the car, and couldn’t help asking: “Little guy, how did you know that the alien’s weakness is on the neck?”
The others couldn’t help but look at him curiously.
Jian Ning blinked, and a trace of nervousness appeared on his face, as if it was because so many people were watching him: “I…I just guessed it… When you were shooting just now, its body could actually dodge some bullets, but it didn’t care at all, and was only concerned with protecting its neck.”
A few days ago, when he was chased by this alien, he managed to escape successfully only because he injured its neck.
Talia’s eyes fell on the young man’s messy, slightly curly black hair. She resisted the urge to touch it and said softly, “You are very attentive.”
After closing the car door, everyone breathed a sigh of relief.
The armored vehicle accelerated towards the base with a roar.
After the armored vehicle completely left, the head lying there suddenly turned around, its scarlet eyeballs rolled around, and then it dragged its thin neck and quickly rushed into the depths of the ruins of a building like a rattlesnake.
The journey was smooth, and an hour later, the gate of the Central Base finally appeared in front of them.
Seeing the familiar base, everyone felt grateful for having survived the disaster.
“Finally we’re back. I thought I was really going to have to die outside today!”
Jian Ning finally got out of the car, raised his head, and looked curiously at the human base in front of him called “Garden of Eden”.
The Central Base, currently the largest human survival base, accommodates millions of people and is huge in scale.
The entire city is surrounded by a metal wall several dozen meters high. It is huge and spectacular, with no end in sight. It is hard to imagine how much time and effort went into building this wall. The silvery-white metal exudes a chill even under the sunlight.
Looking up, a huge semicircular light curtain covered the sky above the city. The occasional light blue halo indicated that the light curtain was operating stably. The high-voltage current blocked all flying alien species, and the solid city walls built of special metals could also prevent ground invasions. The entire city seemed to be completely cut off from the outside world.
Given the limited resources, the world’s technological level is still much higher than Jian Ning knew.
Looking at the base in front of him, Jian Ning was very satisfied.
Even he couldn’t think of any alien species that could break through this level of defense.
Soon, a man with a work badge came to meet them. The man seemed to be very familiar with Talia, and after a brief conversation, he learned about their experience on this trip.
“Encountered an alien species?” The man’s face changed slightly, and he took two steps back calmly.
“Captain Talia, you need to be isolated.”
Talia shrugged helplessly: “Oh… I know. My team and I will of course obey the arrangements of the base.”
Twelve years ago, a sudden disaster infected nearly half of the human race and turned them into “aliens”.
Human flesh and blood have a strong attraction to “aliens”. “Aliens” cannot think, but have extremely strong aggressiveness and self-healing abilities. Ordinary guns cannot cause any harm to them at all.
During that initial period, the entire world seemed to have become a slaughterhouse for “aliens” and was in complete chaos.
Until order was restored, survivor bases were gradually established in various places. Major bases, led by the Central Base, began to send out troops to clean up the “aliens” in an organized manner.
However, the alien species is like a virus, continuing to infect normal humans silently.
Air, blood, food, all kinds of infection routes have been ruled out one by one, and humans have not yet found the specific cause of the infection.
However, one experience was learned from the previously fallen bases – anyone who has come into contact with an alien species has a chance of being infected.
Since then, military personnel have been required to undergo a certain period of quarantine before they can enter the base after going out on cleanup missions.
Talia looked at the young man who was curiously observing the base. Her expression softened and she said to the man, “This is the survivor we met on the way.”
The man followed her gaze, a hint of surprise in his eyes: “Survivor?”
“Don’t worry, someone will help him register after the quarantine is over.”
The group was taken to an isolation room.
Isolation is carried out individually, with each person in a room.
Jian Ning walked into the isolation room and saw a washbasin near the door and a simple folding bed placed thoughtfully in the middle of the room.
Jian Ning washed his face, looked around the empty room casually, raised his head, and the surveillance camera in the corner automatically followed him.
Knowing that he would be staying here for a while, he simply walked to the bed and lay down, ready to take a nap.
Sadly, he could not sleep soundly, as there seemed to be a lingering smell of blood in the small isolation room.
Jian Ning woke up again and again until someone opened the door.
“Isolation Room No. 13, you can come out now.”
When he came out of the isolation room, he saw some familiar faces on both sides.
Talia saw Jian Ning and walked towards him.
Seeing that the young man in front of her was fine and even had a sleepy look on his face, Talia breathed a sigh of relief.
“Go and register your information first. The base will arrange everything for you.”
She hesitated for a moment and left her ID number to Jian Ning.
“Little guy, I have something else to do. If you run into any trouble at the base later, you can come find me.”
Talia still had to count the supplies and report the situation, so she didn’t stay any longer.
Jian Ning was a little puzzled by Talia’s unusually friendly attitude towards him, but he didn’t think too much about it for the time being and tried hard to memorize her ID number.
Soon, a young girl with short hair came trotting over in a hurry, and Jian Ning saw that she was wearing the same work badge around her neck.
The young girl stopped in front of him, took a few seconds to calm her breath, and smiled: “Hello, my name is Qin Xue, I will help you register your information.”
It had been a long time since any new survivors entered the Central Base, and Qin Xue was also a staff member who was temporarily called from another position to help with the registration.
Under the guidance of the staff, Jian Ning filled out his personal information with a mixture of true and false details, and went through a series of steps including pupil scanning and fingerprint entry, and finally reached the last step – pheromone testing.
After Qin Xue finished debugging the machine, she glanced at the young man who was a little overwhelmed in front of the machine and said, “Just stand there.”
“OK.”
Looking at the faint blue light emitted by the machine, Jian Ning’s body became a little tense.
He didn’t have time to ask what the machine was used for.
‘Health check? I guess… it can’t detect his alien identity…’
On the other hand, the test results quickly appeared on the screen in front of the staff.
When Qin Xue saw that the young man’s test result was Omega, she was just a little surprised. But when her eyes moved to the “pheromone matching” function that was just launched today, her face suddenly changed.
She looked at the electronic screen in front of her, and the number in the middle showed that the pheromone compatibility degree was rising continuously.
【80%…】
【90%…】
【95%…】
The compatibility degree on the screen rose rapidly until it reached 99% before it finally paused.
Qin Xue looked at the name next to this string of digits showing the high compatibility degree——
【Shen Yan.】
Admiral Shen Yan?!
Qin Xue smiled at the young man standing in front of the machine through the glass and quickly dialed a number.
“Hello, I need to contact the military command center… There is a new survivor in the base, an Omega. He and Admiral Shen Yan seemed to have a compatibility degree of 99%…” Her gaze suddenly paused, stopping on the bright red number that was changing again.
“No… that Omega is 100% compatible with Admiral Shen Yan!”
Jian Ning was stared at by the staff with smiling eyes for a long time. As an alien species that sneaked into the human base, he felt guilty under such gaze.
After a while, the staff informed him to go to another machine for testing.
Jian Ning kept a straight face, but he felt a little nervous inside.
Did they really find out something?
After testing another identical instrument, Jian Ning saw the expressions on the staff’s faces become very subtle.
Now he was really panicking.
He asked hesitantly, “Excuse me, is there a problem?”
“Ah… No, there’s nothing wrong. It’s just that you are a new resident, so the process is a little complicated. Please wait a moment.”
Seeing the bright red 100% again, Qin Xue immediately reported the same result to the military commander-in-chief through the internal connection.
After a moment of silence, the order was given directly:
“According to the decree issued today, arrange for him to marry Shen Yan immediately.”
“This…” Qin Xue hesitated.
A decree was indeed issued today.
But……
She clearly remembered the content of the decree: to provide pheromone matching results to unmarried people unconditionally as a reference for mate selection, to advocate marriage registration for AOs with high matching information, and to encourage childbirth.
How did it turn into forced marriage?
Qin Xue didn’t dare to ask any more questions about her superior’s order and had to contact the Marriage Registration Center.
So, the marriage registration center, which had always been idle, suddenly received an urgent order from its superiors on this day, and two carefully crafted little red books were quickly produced.
Qin Xue kept smiling at the young man with a nervous look on his face, and a trace of guilt rose in her heart.
She always felt that… They tricked Admiral Shen into getting a partner.
Jian Ning sat on a chair in the rest area and waited. The staff member who had appeared before disappeared for a while and then reappeared.
“Hello, the registration process has been completed. I wish you a happy life in the Central Base.” The staff member smiled and handed over a carefully wrapped gift box, like a gift package for novices.
Jian Ning opened it and saw a dozen beautiful and bright roses and a pile of festive red-wrapped candies.
…What are all these?
After clearing away all of this, he finally saw something useful.
A card, a key, and a…communication device that looked like a watch?
The staff member saw Jian Ning’s confusion and explained, “This is the universal Star Brain of the Central Base. You log in by scanning your iris. Next to it is your ID card and apartment key.”
“Thank you.” Jian Ning raised the corner of his mouth and thanked her sincerely.
Is this what it means to have sweet things after suffering?
He didn’t have to write a graduation thesis or be an office worker who worked from dawn to dusk. He owned a house when he was 20 years old.
Etc……
Jian Ning’s gaze paused, and suddenly she discovered a small red book at the bottom of the box that looked both strange and subtly familiar.
“What is this?” Jian Ning asked puzzledly.
The staff member looked away awkwardly and did not answer.
Jian Ning realized something was wrong and pulled out the little red book from the bottom.
After opening it, the smile on his face suddenly disappeared.
【Name: Jian Ning】
【Gender: Omega】
【Partner: Shen Yan】
【※The base has matched you with the most suitable partner available for you. Your lover’s address is 1302, 13th Floor, No. 1, Military District Apartment, Yinquan Road, District A. Please go to your love nest immediately!】
“What…what is this?” Jian Ning heard his voice trembling.
This time the staff member answered him: “Marriage certificate.”
“…”
Of course he could tell it was a marriage certificate, but the question was – why did he suddenly get married just after having a checkup?!
As if sensing that Jian Ning was on the verge of collapse, the staff member maintained a professional smile and began to talk nonsense according to the instructions of his superior: “Today, the base promulgated the latest law, which will allocate marriages for unmarried people based on the principle of pheromone compatibility. According to the test, your pheromones and those of Admiral Shen Yan have an extremely high degree of compatibility, so the base automatically concluded a marriage relationship between you and Admiral Shen Yan.”
Jian Ning automatically ignored the content that he didn’t understand, and only focused on the promulgation of the law at the beginning and the automatic conclusion of the marriage at the end.
‘Good, good, it’s worthy of being called the apocalypse times. In order to promote population growth, has society come to the point of forced arranged marriages?’
But he is a different species…
Do aliens also have arranged marriages?
A trace of confusion appeared on Jian Ning’s face, and for the first time he wanted to admit the identity that he had always resisted.
And……
He lowered his head and looked at the two big words “Shen Yan” in the partner column with an expressionless face.
Why does his partner seem to be a man?
