- Chapter 24 - The Dragonhawk Guard’s Terms, Looking Forward to Your Performance
Li Mu turned to leave, passing by Wang Yue, and whispered:
“Professor, don’t worry.”
“I’ve just received news from my family—they’ve prepared a second pet beast for me.”
Wang Yue’s eyes lit up, and his anger instantly dissipated.
Both Li Mu and Su Yu had Spirit Stream Realm spiritual power, qualifying them to contract a second pet beast.
But there was a key difference:
Su Yu was a lone individual with no powerful family backing, making it difficult for him to find a suitable pet beast quickly.
Li Mu, on the other hand, came from the influential Li family—an unshakable pillar of Great Xia. They could easily provide him with a powerful pet beast in no time.
The outcome was clear.
Two against one, the advantage was undeniable!
—
Shangguan Ling approached the group of seven students and said, “Liu Xuan, your turn is coming up soon. Go get ready. Su Yu, come with me.”
“Alright.”
While the rest of the group returned to the lounge, Su Yu followed Shangguan Ling out of the arena to an office in the administrative building.
At the door, Shangguan Ling said softly, “Su Yu, first of all, congratulations. After defeating Lei He, you’ve been officially listed on Great Xia’s Potential List. You might not know this, but everyone on that list becomes a key focus of Great Xia’s training efforts.”
“Inside are representatives from the Dragonhawk Guard, here specifically to meet you.”
The Dragonhawk Guard was one of the nine elite military divisions stationed at Great Xia’s nine major demonic lairs. Each lair corresponded to a specialized unit.
The Dragonhawk Guard, stationed in Redstone City, was tasked with defending the Calamity Lair beneath Magic City. They served as the frontline against the many races of the lair.
Su Yu looked puzzled. “They want to meet me?”
Shangguan Ling reassured him, “It’s just a routine procedure. Don’t worry—it’s definitely good news for you.”
“Just speak your mind during the meeting. No need to be overly formal.”
Su Yu nodded.
—
Entering the room, Su Yu saw a man and a woman. The man had a square-shaped face, a burly build, and a scar running across his cheek. The woman had an almond-shaped face, stood around 1.7 meters tall, and had strikingly attractive features.
The moment Su Yu saw them, he felt a strange sense of familiarity.
It was the same feeling he got from Mu Changwei—eyes that had witnessed countless battles and killings.
The square-faced man stood and introduced himself, “Hello, Su Yu. I’m Major Qin Ze of the Dragonhawk Guard. We observed your impressive battle and wanted to discuss a few matters.”
“Please, have a seat.”
Qin Ze pulled out a file while the woman next to him prepared to take notes.
“Su Yu, age 20, recently became a Beastmaster. You didn’t awaken a talent during your Awakening Ceremony but are suspected of later awakening an S-rank talent. Your pet beast, Alia Tepes, is believed to be a sequence no. 99 vampire and the former captain of the Blood Spirit Squad.”
“The report we have on you is missing a lot of details.”
“According to protocol, all newcomers on Great Xia’s Potential List are key candidates for national training. However, before that happens, we’d like to have a detailed understanding of your abilities. Of course, this is entirely voluntary.”
Su Yu shook his head. “I’m sorry, but I’m not ready to disclose my abilities.”
Qin Ze smiled knowingly. “I understand. That’s how most Beastmasters are. This is just routine protocol. For those willing to trust us, we extend an invitation to directly join the Dragonhawk Guard and receive dual training from both the university and the military.”
“Would you consider it?”
Su Yu still shook his head.
To outsiders, Alia appeared to be a vampire from a high-tier sequence, not a God-Tier Sequence. The truth about her identity was too important to reveal.
Qin Ze looked slightly disappointed but nodded. “Understood. Let’s put that aside for now.” Leaning forward, he continued, “As part of the Dragonhawk Guard, we’d like to formally invite you to join our ranks. You should know that Beastmaster University students are reserve soldiers. You are obligated to fight, but you also have the right to choose which battlefield to join.”
“We’re all from Magic City. The Dragonhawk Guard needs talents like you. What do you think? Feel free to state your conditions.”
Su Yu fell into deep thought.
According to Shangguan Ling, after the Nine-School Alliance Tournament, the order of deployment into the demonic lairs would be determined.
At that point, every Beastmaster would have to enter the lairs to fight.
This was the price of enjoying the high status and benefits Beastmasters received in society.
When choosing a battlefield, most people would opt to defend their hometown’s lair.
After a moment, Su Yu nodded. “Major Qin, I’m willing to join the Dragonhawk Guard’s combat division, but I have two conditions.”
Qin Ze’s eyes brightened. “Alright, let’s hear them.”
Su Yu smiled wryly. “First, my compensation. As you know, being a Beastmaster is a bottomless pit of expenses. I don’t come from a Beastmaster family, so my resources are very limited.”
“I’ll also be participating in the Nine-School Alliance Tournament soon. Other guards will likely reach out to me. I’d like to ensure my treatment is at least on par with what they’d offer.”
Qin Ze’s expression twitched slightly.
Another one who doesn’t move without a clear benefit.
But he couldn’t blame him. Every powerful Beastmaster consumed vast resources. It was just the nature of their profession.
“Alright. I’ll agree to that.”
Su Yu continued, “Good. My second condition is simpler. I want my family to be protected.”
Qin Ze replied, “Of course. Once you join the Dragonhawk Guard, your family will be relocated to the Dragonhawk Guard’s residential compound, with dedicated patrols and security.”
Satisfied, Su Yu said, “Alright, I’ll join.”
“Also, Major Qin, I’d like to request an advance on some Life Essence Drops.”
Based on the current pace, Alia would need 97 more days to reach the Metamorphosis Realm. Su Yu needed a large amount of Life Essence Drops to enhance his constitution and boost his vitality.
Qin Ze hesitated. “Life Essence Drops? That’s an extremely rare resource. Even the Dragonhawk Guard’s stockpile is limited.”
“Normally, a Beastmaster ranked in the top ten of Great Xia’s Potential List receives one drop per month upon joining the guard.”
“Additional drops must be earned through battlefield merit.”
Su Yu didn’t hold back. “I’d like to request at least ten drops in advance. Ideally, forty.”
Qin Ze blurted out, “What?”
Su Yu wasn’t shy. He was making a bold demand.
Forty drops—equivalent to 40 billion yuan! While the price was inflated by Great Xia’s Beastmaster Resource Subsidy Act, its actual value was still astronomical.
Su Yu knew this was a rare opportunity. Life Essence Drops weren’t available anywhere else; the frontlines had the largest supply.
Currently, with ten drops, it would take Su Yu 100 days to help Alia advance.
If he could get forty drops, that timeline could shrink to under 20 days—just in time for their deployment into the lairs.
In the demonic lairs, only strength ensured survival.
Qin Ze, visibly troubled, said cautiously, “That’s a large amount. I’ll need to consult with my superiors.”
He didn’t want to make a definitive refusal, knowing another division might offer Su Yu what he wanted.
Su Yu understood that proving his value was key to securing these resources.
“Major Qin, I need those drops.”
“How about this: in tomorrow’s preliminary round, assuming no surprises, I’ll likely face Li Mu, ranked third on the Potential List. If I win, will you help me apply for forty drops?”
“With those forty drops, I’m confident I can secure the championship in the Nine-School Alliance Tournament’s freshman category.”
Qin Ze’s eyes narrowed.
Winning the tournament would be a completely different matter.
“Alright.”
“You have my word.”
Qin Ze stood and extended his hand. “I look forward to your performance.”
Su Yu shook his hand firmly. “You won’t be disappointed.”
—
After the Dragonhawk Guard representatives left, Shangguan Ling smiled. “You have some nerve making such bold claims.”
“Even with Alia by your side, this year’s freshmen aren’t ordinary.”
Su Yu shrugged helplessly. “Professor, I don’t have a Beastmaster family supporting me. My resources are limited. I have to fight for what I can.”
Shangguan Ling nodded. “Fair enough. That brings me to the second reason I called you here.”
“This year’s preliminaries are overseen by the Combat Department. Tomorrow’s draw results are already in.”
“Your opponent is Li Mu.”
“What I want to discuss with you is Li Mu’s background and the Li family behind him.”
