- Chapter 2 - You Are Me, Then Who Am I?
When Luo Jingcha woke up again, she found herself lying on a hospital bed. The blindingly white walls and heavy smell of disinfectant made her involuntarily furrow her brow.
Then, the pain from her body gradually brought her to full consciousness.
“I’m not dead?” Luo Jingcha could hardly believe it.
“Can you hear me speaking?”
Just as she was puzzled, a gentle voice tinged with fear surrounded her. Luo Jingcha instinctively became alert, but looking around, she couldn’t find any trace of another person.
Had she heard wrong?
Luo Jingcha was confused. She shook her head, but the voice sounded again. This time Luo Jingcha heard clearly—the voice seemed to be coming from inside her own head.
“Why are you inside my body?” the voice said, seeming equally puzzled by Luo Jingcha’s existence.
Inside her body? What did that mean?
Luo Jingcha didn’t understand, but hearing the voice sound timid and somewhat fearful, she tentatively asked, “Who are you?”
“I… I’m Luo Jingcha, the owner of this body. Then… then who are you?” the voice answered.
Luo Jingcha was stunned. She was Luo Jingcha, so who was she herself?
Before she could figure it out, the voice continued, “You’re not one of those monsters from novels that eat people’s souls and then occupy their bodies, are you!”
“……”
Luo Jingcha didn’t speak, but as if suddenly thinking of something, she looked down at her body and found it was much smaller and thinner than her original self. Catching sight of a phone on the bedside table, she picked it up and tried the fingerprint unlock, and to her surprise, it opened directly.
But this clearly wasn’t her phone.
A suspicion formed in her heart, though she could hardly believe it. After thinking for a moment, she opened the camera app and switched to the front-facing camera. Sure enough, the screen showed a face that looked like herself at seventeen or eighteen years old.
Luo Jingcha took a deep breath. The pain from her chest forced her to accept this reality.
Seeing that Luo Jingcha hadn’t spoken for a long time, the voice asked cautiously, “What’s wrong with you? Are you preparing to devour me?”
Luo Jingcha collected herself and said, “I’m not some monster. I don’t know why I appeared here or how I entered your body, but I truly have no intention of occupying your body. To figure out some things, I need to ask you a few questions that you must answer honestly. Can you accept that?”
The voice seemed to think for a moment before saying, “Go ahead and ask.”
“Do you know about The Wandering Earth?” Luo Jingcha asked.
“Wandering? Earth?” The voice sounded confused. “I know about Earth, but why would it wander? Are scientists planning to do something to Earth?”
Luo Jingcha: “……”
“Never mind, next question. Do you know about Honor of Kings?”
“What’s that? A bunch of really powerful people fighting for first place?”
“What about Weibo, Tencent, Zhihu?”
The voice seemed confused by her questions. “What bo? Are you hurt somewhere? Should I blow on it to make it better? What are you talking about? I can’t understand a single thing.”
After hearing her response, Luo Jingcha finally lay back on the hospital bed and let out a long sigh.
If her guess was correct, she must have had her soul transported to a parallel world version of herself at the moment of the car accident—and to her seventeen-year-old self at that.
Luo Jingcha didn’t know what to say. Why did such melodramatic things always happen to her?
After explaining the situation to the original owner, she also accepted this reality. Even if she didn’t accept it, it wouldn’t help—she currently had no way to return.
However, Luo Jingcha was somewhat puzzled. With her own terrible personality, how could this world’s version of herself be so innocent and easy to talk to? This Schrödinger’s cat difference was too great.
Suddenly, the hospital room door was pushed open, and two middle-aged people, a man and woman around forty, walked in. All three stared at each other in surprise.
The middle-aged woman reacted first, rushing over to hug Luo Jingcha tightly, crying, “My Chacha finally woke up! You scared Mom to death!”
Mom? Mom?
From birth, Luo Jingcha had never seen her own biological mother. This was the first time someone calling herself “Mom” had held her. Though she wasn’t used to it, she didn’t dislike the feeling.
Seeing Luo Jingcha wake up, the middle-aged man’s eyes also reddened, but he didn’t cry like the woman. He just walked over, patted her head, and smiled, “It’s good that you’re awake, good that you’re awake.”
Logically, this man should be her father, but he wasn’t really her father. Luo Jingcha asked Xiao Luo, “Who are they?”
“What?”
Xiao Luo seemed unable to sense what was happening in the outside world, so Luo Jingcha had to explain what had just occurred.
Xiao Luo said, “They’re my adoptive parents, but they treat me like their own. They must be very worried about my accident this time. Could you please comfort them for me?”
Comfort?
Luo Jingcha’s expression involuntarily stiffened. She really had never comforted anyone in her life. Her family were basically all former soldiers who, though they spoiled her, absolutely wouldn’t allow her to be weak in character.
“Hurry up,” Xiao Luo urged her.
Left with no choice, she patted the woman’s back and awkwardly said, “Mom, I’m fine. Please don’t be sad.”
Though awkward, calling out “Mom” gave her a strange, warm feeling.
The woman responded, wiped her tears, and said, “Good child, listen to Mom. Break your contract with the company. Let’s stop chasing this celebrity dream and go back to studying properly. Look at yourself—you’ve been tortured into this state for that illusory dream.”
The man also agreed. “That’s right, Chacha. Look at all those trainees in your company—how many can really make it? You’ve been with the company since you were fourteen, and these three years, who knows what kind of life you’ve been living. Dad doesn’t ask for you to be very successful in the future, just hopes you can live peacefully and safely. But look at this time—you almost lost your life! Dad won’t allow you to do this anymore. After you’re discharged, you’ll go back to school and study seriously. I’ll go talk to your company about breaking the contract!”
After hearing what Father and Mother Luo said, Luo Jingcha realized that this world’s version of herself was a trainee who studied while training at a company. Although she had acted in several movies in her previous world, she couldn’t relate to being a trainee at all. She imagined herself wearing a little dress, wiggling her bottom while singing and dancing on stage, but ultimately couldn’t bear it and quickly erased this image from her mind.
Though she really wanted to immediately agree to break the contract, this wasn’t her own body after all, so she explained to Xiao Luo. “Your parents hope you can break the contract with the company, return to school, and live a normal life.”
After speaking, she righteously added, “I think your parents are right. Studying is good—when the youth are strong, the nation is strong.”
“No way! This is absolutely unacceptable!”
Luo Jingcha didn’t expect that Xiao Luo, who usually spoke so softly and weakly, would be so resolute about this matter. She said firmly, “You absolutely cannot agree to this. I can listen to them about everything else, but absolutely not this one thing!”
Luo Jingcha had a bit of a headache. In terms of stubbornness, the two versions of herself were quite similar.
“Then what do you want me to do?” Luo Jingcha asked.
“I… I don’t know, but please, no matter what, you must help me convince Dad and Mom. I’ve never had any friends since I was little, and I don’t have anything I particularly like. Except for the stage, except for performing, I don’t know any other way to express myself. If even this is taken away, I really don’t know what I’d live for.” Xiao Luo’s voice was full of sadness.
She pleaded, “Please help me. You said we’re the same person from different worlds, but essentially we are the same person. I can sense you, and you understand me clearly, don’t you?”
Luo Jingcha sighed. Of course she understood. She could only say helplessly, “Fine, consider it rent for borrowing your body.”
Just then, a woman in a business suit walked in—it was Xue Hua, the agent responsible for their batch of trainees.
Seeing that Luo Jingcha had woken up, Xue Hua said directly, “Good that you’re awake. I have a contract here for you to look at. If there are no problems, sign it quickly. I’ve already arranged leave from school for you. In a few days, you’ll join the crew with me. Shen Anyan is a currently popular female star. If you perform well as her dance double, there will definitely be benefits for you in the future.”
Hearing Xue Hua’s commanding tone, Father Luo immediately became angry. He snatched the contract from her hand and threw it into the nearby trash can. “Look at how injured my child is! She almost died, do you know that? And you’re still arranging work for her! She’s still a student and will take the college entrance exam next year. Her job now is to study. We won’t sign this contract. Please leave!”
“What? Not signing?” Xue Hua looked at the contract in the trash can in disbelief and angrily said, “Do you know how much effort I put in to get this opportunity? The person she’ll be a dance double for is the big star Shen Anyan, the young lady of the Shen family!”
Father Luo said disdainfully, “So what? Every child is a treasure in their parents’ eyes. I don’t care if you’re the young lady of the Shen family or the eldest daughter of the Wang family—no one’s daughter is more important than my daughter’s life!”
“You!”
Xue Hua was quite angry at his words and had to use her trump card. “Luo Jingcha is still an artist under the company. When the company gives her work, she has to take it. If she doesn’t follow the company’s arrangements, she can wait to be blacklisted!”
Father Luo said, “I don’t know about blacklisting or understand your industry’s affairs. I only know that after my daughter’s accident, your company has been avoiding responsibility from beginning to end. My daughter can’t afford to waste time with such a company. Let’s just break the contract directly!”
