- Chapter 40 - Excuse Me While I Run Away.
Time quickly slipped into April, and the temperature in Jingkou began to rise.
Cheng Jinyang’s administration once again conducted a thorough inspection of the refugees in Jingkou and unexpectedly discovered many hidden talents among the populace: an engineer working as a porter at the docks, a professor running a street food stall, and an entrepreneur lending money on the black market.
Many people had lost their livelihoods after fleeing from various parts of Central Plains decades ago to the present-day Jingkou Town.
After completing the survey, Cheng Yuexian forwarded the list to Chief Clerk Wang.
Before Chief Clerk Wang could review it, Wang Wanrou snatched it and carefully scrutinized it with the other girls in the administration.
Those the Northern Army could utilize were prioritized, such as engineers specializing in mechanics and energy.
Those whom the army couldn’t absorb were sent to the various families to be utilized, like academic talents for research institutes.
For those that neither the army nor the families could use, Cheng Jinyang provided two options: one was to reimburse travel expenses to Jiankang or Lin’an, where jobs are easier to find in big cities. The other was to stay in Jingkou and start a business. For instance, a businessman who secretly bribed refugee gangs and lent money at high interest (it was said he previously engaged in innovative finance in Yanjing) was recruited by Cui Xiaoniang to work as an investment manager, responsible for traveling to Jiankang to establish connections with aristocratic families and companies to attract investment.
Cheng Jinyang, not well-versed in these practical matters, handed everything over to the capable administration team and focused on cultivating his strength. He always felt like he was forgetting something.
One evening, everyone returned to the bedroom in the Governor’s residence in Jingkou as usual.
Some were bathing, some were changing clothes, some were playing on their phones, and some were reading, all passing the final moments before sleep.
Suddenly, a woman walked in through the bedroom door—locked from the inside, but it posed no obstacle to her.
Li Qingwan was the first to react, darting forward and striking at the woman’s abdomen with her right fist. The woman grabbed Teacher Li by the throat and tossed her aside effortlessly.
Spiritual attacks targeted the woman’s mind, and a metal spear aimed at her heart. With a mere glance, Xie Guyan dissipated the spiritual attacks and shattered the spear.
Xing Yuanzhi emerged from the bathroom, wrapped in a wet towel with water still dripping from her legs. She quickly grabbed the peacock plume backpack from the cabinet, the gun barrel swiftly extending behind her. Xie Guyan coldly watched, but then they all heard Cheng Jinyang shout:
“Wait! Everyone, stand down!”
Xing Yuanzhi paused her trigger finger and heard Cheng Jinyang awkwardly say:
“Mom, what are you doing here?”
The room fell into dead silence. Glancing at the bewildered, shocked, dazed expressions around her, Xie Guyan frowned and asked, “Why are they still virgins? When do you plan to start producing offspring?”
……
After briefly explaining the situation to the girls, they all seemed to lose the ability to speak, sitting there silently, staring at either Cheng Jinyang or Xie Guyan in stunned silence.
Cheng Jinyang understood their feelings.
After all, they were about to go to bed with their husband, and suddenly the mother-in-law who had supposedly died years ago, barges in. It would be hard for anyone to accept.
But, well, introductions had to be made.
“Mom, let me introduce you.” Cheng Jinyang jumped off the bed and began to introduce, “This is…”
“Wang Wanrou,” Miss Wang said calmly. “Madam Xie Guyan, if you have time, could you spare a moment to talk with me?”
“Not interested,” Xie Guyan replied indifferently.
Wang Wanrou was silent for a moment before smiling perfectly and gently saying, “I apologize for my abruptness.”
“How are your preparations going?” Xie Guyan ignored her and asked Cheng Jinyang.
Cheng Jinyang was slightly taken aback and quickly explained:
“No one has come to attack me recently…”
“She is likely coming tonight,” Xie Guyan interrupted him.
“Then we must leave Jingkou immediately and head north!” Cheng Jinyang exclaimed in shock.
“So, you really haven’t prepared,” Xie Guyan said expressionlessly, turning around. “Let’s go.”
“Let’s go, let’s go,” Cheng Jinyang said, turning to the girls. “You all stay here!”
Hearing about the impending attack, the girls quickly began clamoring, “Wait, aren’t you taking us with you?”
“Jinyang, let me come with you at least, I can protect you…”
However, Cheng Jinyang rejected every request decisively. Xie Guyan’s enemy was undoubtedly a very powerful super demon. More people would be meaningless and only increase the risk of unnecessary casualties.
Not wanting to explain this to the girls, he could only firmly refuse them all and then rushed into the dark night with Xie Guyan.
The girls were left staring at each other in the bedroom, looking very much like abandoned wives in the dead of night.
“If only I were a bit stronger,” Miss Qingqing was the first to break the silence.
The metal spear from earlier seemed to have its supernatural power drained by Xie Guyan, making it clear that she was completely suppressed in both grade and ability.
“Sigh,” Xing Yuanzhi covered her face and sighed.
Zheng Qiupei tended to the thrown Li Qingwan. Though they didn’t speak, their expressions showed they felt the same way.
As for Cui Xiaoniang and Xiao Wangshu, they appeared much calmer. Being at the bottom in terms of combat ability, they naturally had no confidence to lose.
“Let’s go to sleep,” Wang Wanrou finally said.
“Just go to sleep like this?” Cui Xiaoniang hesitated, “Aren’t we waiting for him?”
“What if he returns tomorrow?” Miss Wang retorted.
“Then I’ll wait until tomorrow,” Cui Xiaoniang stubbornly replied.
“Suit yourself,” Wang Wanrou said, climbing into bed.
“I’ll wait with you,” Xing Yuanzhi said, “We’ll take turns keeping watch, and wake everyone if anything happens.”
“Count me in,” Miss Qingqing added.
So the three girls agreed to take turns standing watch in the order of Xing Yuanzhi, Cui Xiaoniang, and Miss Qingqing.
The room gradually fell into a quiet stillness as the other girls went to sleep.
Xing Yuanzhi turned on the flashlight function on her phone, placing it on the bedside table, and watched the dark night outside.
She feared that at any moment, Jinyang might appear at the door, covered in blood and barely conscious.
She hated her own weakness, which left her powerless to help.
“Jinyang…” Xing Yuanzhi suddenly spoke.
The rest of her sentence stayed in her heart.
You must come back safely…
