Girl, There's Something Wrong With You - Chapter 4
At the Security Bureau
The process of requesting a visitation was surprisingly smooth. With the credentials of the illustrious Taiyuan Wang Clan, no one dared to stand in their way.
In the holding cell, Wang Wanrou and Cheng Jinyang met the elderly woman.
Her hair was streaked with white and messy, her clothes filthy and emanating that peculiar musty odor often associated with the elderly. Her face was deeply wrinkled, her eyes cloudy, and when she opened her mouth, it was clear she had few teeth left. Judging by her appearance, she was extremely old and likely living in poor conditions.
It was no wonder the security officers had only detained her; they likely thought her to be senile and hadn’t bothered to take her ramblings seriously.
“I’ll ask you a question,” Wang Wanrou said as she sat down across the table, skipping any pleasantries. “This White Lotus Sect—”
Before she could finish, the old woman’s eyes widened in shock.
“Your appearance… Immortal! An Immortal has descended upon Peng City!”
The old woman immediately tried to push her chair back to kneel and bow but was restrained by the handcuffs tethering her wrists to the table. Unable to kneel, she resorted to banging her forehead vigorously against the table instead.
The noise caught the attention of a security officer outside, who peered through the window in the door and couldn’t help but marvel. As expected of the Taiyuan Wang Clan, the most powerful family in the land. Even this rambling old crone is bowing to them in reverence.
Miss Wang, seeing the old woman’s manic behavior, didn’t bother to pacify her. She simply picked up the file on the table and began reading.
The file indicated that the old woman’s surname was Luo, and she was a refugee from the Liao region. According to those from her hometown, she had once had a daughter who had been devoured by demons during an attack. The loss had driven her insane, and she would frequently mutter nonsense about her daughter still being alive.
Some years later, her fortress was reportedly destroyed by demons, and no one in the entire subway station survived—except for her. Somehow, she had managed to travel southward and ended up in Peng City.
The journey from the Liao region to Peng City was over a thousand kilometers, a perilous route through demon-infested wastelands. For a lone elderly woman to survive such a trek unscathed was nothing short of miraculous. Curious locals from her hometown asked how she had done it.
But the old woman, in her incoherent state, could only say, “My daughter brought me here.”
Her daughter had long been dead—eaten by demons. How could she possibly have escorted her? Was it her ghost?
When the locals couldn’t make sense of her story, they quickly distanced themselves. The old woman’s subsequent behavior didn’t help her case, as she began spouting strange doctrines about the “Eternal Mother.” Though she was repeatedly detained by the authorities for preaching in public, investigations revealed no real ties to the White Lotus Sect. The so-called “blessed water” she distributed turned out to be tap water, so they would release her after minor penalties.
At this moment, the old woman was still fervently banging her head against the table. Cheng Jinyang couldn’t bear it any longer and spoke up:
“The Immortal is asking you a question. Answer her instead of just bowing!”
“Hm.” Wang Wanrou set the file down and said coolly, “I’ll ask, and you’ll answer. Be thorough, and don’t omit a single detail. Understood?”
“Yes, yes,” the old woman replied hastily, her gaze suddenly turning vacant.
The mind stamp had been applied.
Cheng Jinyang was slightly surprised. Using a mind stamp for something this trivial? That seems unnecessary.
Still, since Miss Wang seemed to enjoy it, he decided not to question her methods and busied himself with his phone, half-listening as she interrogated the old woman.
The old woman recounted how her hometown had been attacked by demons, forcing her to flee with others. Along the way, she encountered her “daughter.”
Her daughter claimed she had been fortunate enough to ascend to immortality after her death and was now working in the Celestial Court. Though her job wasn’t particularly prestigious, she was doing well enough. While she wished she could stay by her mother’s side to care for her, the strict rules of heaven forbade prolonged interactions between mortals and immortals. As a compromise, she had escorted her mother south and given her a large sum of money to ensure her later years would be comfortable.
The old woman, already superstitious by nature, wholeheartedly believed her daughter’s words. Seeing her child miraculously alive again, she accepted everything she said without question. Their conversations revealed that the Celestial Court operated under the authority of the Ziwei Emperor, while the doctrine of the immortals originated from the Eternal Mother.
The daughter, however, lamented that her position in the Celestial Court wasn’t ideal. In response, the old woman eagerly volunteered to help her daughter improve her performance—essentially becoming a “referral” to boost her daughter’s “metrics.”
The requirement for “thoroughness” imposed by the mind stamp made the old woman’s account disorganized, filled with subjective descriptions and intuitive guesses that made little sense. Listening to her ramblings, Cheng Jinyang felt himself drifting off to sleep.
Wang Wanrou, however, patiently listened to every word without interruption.
After the visitation ended and they left the Security Bureau, Cheng Jinyang couldn’t help but ask,
“Wanrou, what are you planning to do?”
“Can’t you tell?” Wang Wanrou replied languidly.
Cheng Jinyang: ……
“I can only tell one thing,” he said with a sly grin. “When Wanrou acts, there’s always a deeper meaning.”
Miss Wang stared at him in silence, her expression a mix of exasperation and amusement.
“What was the purpose of our visit?” she asked.
“Uh…” Cheng Jinyang wanted to say, To save my Xiao Li, but instead he answered seriously, “To investigate the situation with the northern demons.”
“Exactly.” Wang Wanrou sighed softly, though it was unclear what she was sighing about. “Now we have an opportunity to establish a direct link with the demons in the real world and dig up more information, yet you’re here asking me what I plan to do?”
“I see now.” Cheng Jinyang felt a tinge of shame.
How did I not realize something so obvious? It must be Wanrou’s presence dulling my wits. She probably drains the IQ of those around her. Terrifying.
“Brilliant, Wanrou,” he said to cover his embarrassment, showering her with praise. “As expected of you, instantly connecting the dots and uncovering the hidden logic. I’m truly in awe. Should we tell Sister Xinnan about this?”
“Do as you like,” Wang Wanrou’s expression darkened immediately.
“Hmm, on second thought, there’s no need.” Cheng Jinyang, ever the master of reading the room, noticed the temperature in her gaze plummet several degrees. Realizing his slip-up, he quickly corrected himself.
“It wouldn’t make sense to report something half-baked to her before we’ve fully investigated it.”
“You could investigate with her instead,” Wang Wanrou said icily. “Your presence here doesn’t make a difference to me.”
“Absolutely not!” Cheng Jinyang’s expression turned resolute. “Wanrou, I left with you, and before we departed, I swore to keep you safe. If anything happens to you, how could I explain myself to Lord Wang? How could I face the other girls?”
Wang Wanrou was momentarily at a loss for words. This guy has become increasingly shameless lately, using my own words to counter me! What oath to keep me safe? On the day we left, wasn’t it me who used those very words to provoke Sima Xinnan? When did you ever make such an oath?!
“Fine.” She let out a cold laugh. “In that case, if I were to climb a mountain of knives or wade into a sea of fire…”
“I’ll be the one to hold the knives for you, and I’ll row the boat through the flames!” Cheng Jinyang declared without hesitation.
