- Chapter 10 - The Hero and Knight-chan â‘¡
“Come on, come on, don’t hold back—dig in!”
“Thank you for the meal!”
Meals in the countryside are generally hearty, with bold flavors and large portions. In other words, they’re roughly delicious.
Potatoes! Some big hunk of meat! Tomatoes! Rustic bread! Soup served in an oversized bowl! That’s the kind of menu we were treated to.
Having been shown to Knight-chan’s estate, we found ourselves enjoying a feast that practically overwhelmed the table.
“It’s so good!”
Maybe her stomach was empty after throwing everything up, but Red Hair-chan was enthusiastically shoveling food into her mouth. Impressive. She was just vomiting earlier, and now she’s got this appetite… or maybe it’s because she emptied her stomach that she can eat this much now.
“The vegetables turned out great this year~. And you know how Sage-chan set up that teleportation magic circle, right? I was thinking I’d use it to send some vegetables over to you, Hero-kun.”
“Oh yeah. I heard you tried using that teleportation circle and got sick?”
“Ugh!? W-Who told you that!?”
“The innkeeper Oba-chan.”
“Ugh, she’s such a blabbermouth… How embarrassing.”
“Well, it makes sense. You always got motion sickness on boats too. Now that you mention it, I remember.”
“Don’t bring that up!”
Even in this short exchange, her expressions quickly shifted between joy, anger, and embarrassment.
It’s a bit contradictory to say this, but… expressive beauties are incredibly cute.
Knight-chan is someone who laughs a lot, talks a lot, eats a lot, and drinks a lot. She may not be as over-the-top as Necromancer-san, but she can actually hold her alcohol quite well.
“Here you go, Hero-kun. Allow this princess to pour you a drink.”
“Haha… I am truly honored.”
I bowed my head jokingly as she poured me some of the local booze. It feels almost wasteful to have a beautiful woman pouring my drink.
Drinking in the middle of the day was a luxury I couldn’t even imagine during our adventuring days, but this is our first reunion in a year. A little extravagance now and then won’t hurt. Not like I believe in gods or anything, so no divine punishment to worry about.
“Still, you’ve outdone yourself, Hero-kun. I thought you were just lazing around enjoying retirement, but then you show up with such a cute girl!”
“I’ve already been told that.”
“Huh? By who!?”
“The innkeeper Oba-chan.”
“Geez! Am I basically the same person as the innkeeper!?”
At Knight-chan’s outburst, even the maid who had been diligently serving us couldn’t help but stifle a laugh.
Glancing to my side, I noticed Red Hair-chan had paused her vigorous eating to look at Knight-chan.
“Hm? What’s wrong? If there’s anything you need, I can have it brought over.”
Noticing her gaze, Knight-chan flashed her a soft smile.
There was a faint elegance in that gentle expression.
“Or… does the food not suit your taste?”
“N-No, that’s not it at all! It’s really delicious!”
“That’s good to hear. That dish there? I made it myself, so I’m glad you like it.”
Pointing to the potato dish, Knight-chan explained. Red Hair-chan, who’s quite expressive herself, widened her eyes in surprise.
“A princess!? You cook?”
“I do! I cook a lot. If you love eating, you should learn how to cook too. They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, after all.”
“I-I see.”
“You know, despite being a knight and wielding two holy swords, I used a flaming one to kind of—woosh!”
“You cooked it with fire?”
“Of course not. I used a frying pan, like a normal person.”
“Wh-What… Hero-san!?”
It was too amusing. She was being completely teased.
Red Hair-chan turned to me for help, but I avoided her gaze and focused on eating. These potatoes are so good.
“That’s just how she gets once she’s had some alcohol. You’ll get used to it.”
“Wh-What…”
“This girl’s really cute and fun, isn’t she~?”
“Ah, um, I… I’m sorry if this is rude toward a princess, but…”
“No, Red Hair-chan. I think the one rubbing her face on you right now is the one being rude.”
“Hero-kun, be quiet. But yeah, there’s no need to be so formal. So, what were you going to say?”
“Uh, um… You’re a princess of the neighboring kingdom, right?”
Red Hair-chan asked hesitantly, her tone uncertain.
It sounded almost like a riddle.
“Ah, yeah. I don’t really seem like a princess, huh? I hear that a lot.”
“Honestly, you’ve spent more time as an adventurer traveling with me than you ever did being a princess.”
“That’s true.”
I chimed in, and Knight-chan folded her arms dramatically, nodding in agreement.
While she can switch between formal and casual as needed, Knight-chan has never been one for rigid formality.
“Anyway, since Hero-kun went out of his way to bring you here, I’d like to get along with you too. Just call me ‘Knight-san’ casually, okay?”
“…Okay! Got it, Knight-san!”
“Good, good. So, is there anything you’d like to ask me?”
“Let me see… Oh! How about an embarrassing memory of Hero-san?”
“Why do you have to start with something like that?”
“Great idea. This’ll take a while.”
Stop it. Don’t let it take a while.
