- Chapter 29 - Necromancer-san and the Demon King
“How is Liliamila doing?”
“She’s beyond saving now.”
“Are you providing her with food?”
“Regardless, we can’t show her to the public anymore.”
“What an unfortunate situation. I heard the cause of death was a blade!”
“What should we tell his family…?”
“This is a stain on the family name! A disgrace for generations to come!”
“He wasn’t going to recover anyway. They’re probably relieved to see the trouble gone.”
“Did Liliamila kill him?”
“I heard it was suicide. I pity her.”
“But isn’t it essentially her doing?”
“Such misfortune. If only he had died sooner…”
“Bringing people back to life is unnatural in the first place.”
“That’s a dangerous magic.”
“Still, magic is magic.”
“Indeed. It has its uses.”
“What about her relatives?”
“No matter. Kill her parents and brothers.”
“They’ll only interfere with the experiments.”
“Yes, and send her underground. But handle her with care.”
“Can magic even be ripped from the body?”
“We won’t know until we try.”
“In that sense, her body is ideal.”
—
Through magic, Liliamila lost everything.
Ever since she was imprisoned in darkness, she stopped keeping track of time. No matter what was done to her, her heart no longer stirred.
Her parents were dead. Her brothers were dead. The man she loved died hating her.
Chained by the neck, hands, and feet, she became the subject of countless experiments. Despite it all, Liliamila could not die.
Eventually, she began to feel the same as he had.
I want to die. I want someone to kill me. I want to be free.
She wanted to stop thinking. She wanted her heartbeat to cease.
If breathing and existing define life, then yes, Liliamila was alive. But her soul, submerged in despair, could only rot away in the darkness.
Before she was completely consumed, she appeared.
The door opened. The sudden light, the first she had seen in months, nearly blinded her.
“Hello.”
It was a sweet, delicate voice, like the sound of a bell.
“You poor thing. Trapped in a place like this… It must have been so hard. So painful. But don’t worry anymore.”
It was a kind, compassionate voice.
“I’m here now.”
It was a voice that seemed to see through everything.
“…Kill me.”
“Huh?”
“Please, kill me.”
“Oh my… do you want to die?”
Her eyes, accustomed to the dark, couldn’t make out the face of the figure standing in the light.
“Very well. If that’s what you want, I’ll kill you.”
But somehow, she knew the girl was smiling.
And so, she took the outstretched hand.
—
The girl who picked up Liliamila was a king.
She held no political power. She did not come from a noble lineage. The girl simply stood there, a king by virtue of her pure strength.
“I see. He must have wanted you to kill him.”
Yet, to say the girl was nothing but strength would also be incorrect.
As someone who called herself the Demon King, she possessed wisdom and grace befitting her title. She listened to others, cared for their hearts, and spoke her mind with honesty.
After hearing Liliamila’s story, the petite king nodded quietly, tears falling from her eyes.
They were tears.
Something that had long since dried up within Liliamila, something she could no longer produce no matter how hard she tried.
“You possess a magic that distorts the world. Unfortunately, even with my strength, I cannot grant you death.”
And so, the girl presented her with an answer.
“Until I gain the power to kill you, you will serve me, Liliamila Guildenstern.”
“And if I serve you… you will kill me?”
“Yes, I will.”
The girl reached out and grabbed Liliamila’s black hair.
She thought she would be subjected to violence. To be beaten. Her body tensed at the thought.
But she was wrong.
The girl forcefully, with nothing but sheer will, stole a kiss from Liliamila. After a pause of a few seconds, the heated breath parted from her lips.
Ruby-red eyes, cold yet incomparably beautiful, gazed deeply at Liliamila.
“Poor Liliamila. I will love you.”
In those eyes, she thought, perhaps she could shine. Perhaps she could feel that way.
“…Demon King-sama.”
“Hmm?”
For a moment, still dazed by the lingering warmth on her lips, Liliamila thought back to herself and to the man she couldn’t kill. Then, she asked:
“Is killing someone… a form of love?”
The Demon King answered immediately.
“Killing can be love.”
She stated it plainly.
She affirmed it fully.
And her smile was truly beautiful.
“Because that’s what you want most from the bottom of your heart.”
What she had longed for all this time was right there.
Through those transparent words, she felt as though she could finally face herself.
And so, Liliamila Guildenstern became the world’s most infamous necromancer.
