- I Finished Saving the World, But Then I Picked Up a Girl With Amnesia
- Chapter 9 - The Hero and Knight-chan ①
Thanks to Sage-chan’s help, we arrived in the territory governed by Knight-chan, and we immediately found ourselves in a bit of trouble.
“I-I’m sorry… Hero-san.”
“It’s okay. You don’t need to apologize for this.”
“But… I… I don’t think I can take it anymore.”
“It’s fine. Just let it all out. I’ll take care of everything.”
“H-Hero-san…”
With her beautiful crimson eyes brimming with tears, Red Hair-chan trembled as she nodded—
“Blrraaaaghhh.”
“There, there. Let it all out. Let it all out.”
And so, Red Hair-chan is currently in the middle of an impressive reverse process.
The reason is simple. It seems the unique floating sensation of the teleportation magic circle didn’t sit well with her, and she immediately got motion sickness. While it’s a convenient product of advanced magical civilization, it has its downsides.
Rubbing her back, I called out toward the back.
“Hey, Oba-chan! Could I get another bucket? And some water and a cloth too!”
“Got it! Hang on a sec!”
Luckily, I’ve visited this area a few times before and had some familiarity with the place. We managed to take emergency refuge at an inn run by a friendly Oba-chan I know, and I was able to take care of Red Hair-chan.
“There, there. Are you okay, young lady? Hang in there.”
“Ugh… I’m so sorry.”
“Don’t worry about talking. Just focus on feeling better. Let it all out. Let it all out.”
“Yeah, teleportation magic circles do tend to make some people sick. It’s certainly handy to travel all the way to the capital in one go, but I don’t use them much myself.”
Long-distance teleportation magic tends to make people more prone to motion sickness the further they travel. Since the distance from my town to the capital wasn’t too far, I hadn’t encountered this issue before. But this is frontier territory—our trip covered a significant distance, and that strain likely took its toll.
“Did anyone test that teleportation circle before we used it?”
“Oh, of course. As soon as that adorable Sage-chan set it up, Her Highness was the first to try it.”
“And how did she handle it?”
“She threw up.”
“Well, that’s not good.”
“Sure isn’t.”
Her Highness refers to Knight-chan. Wait, she got sick too? Seriously?
Isn’t there some kind of anti-motion-sickness magic? They sell herbs for seasickness when traveling by ship, so maybe that could help. I’ll suggest improvements to Sage-chan next time.
“Still, the Hero who saved the world sure is popular. Bringing along such a cute girl.”
“Urgh… blrraaagh…”
“…Bringing along such a cute girl, huh…”
Red Hair-chan is undeniably a beautiful girl, but it’s a little hard to call someone beautiful when they’re actively vomiting unpleasant things. Even Oba-chan hesitated to finish her sentence. Understandable.
“She has a bit of a complicated situation. I wanted to introduce her to Knight-chan.”
“Honestly… Helping people is good and all, but after so long without showing your face, you turn up with a girl in tow? ‘ ’-sama would be heartbroken.”
“Knight-chan wouldn’t worry about that kind of thing.”
“But, you know, ‘ ’-sama really—”
“Oba-chan.”
Tap, tap.
Instead of rubbing Red Hair-chan’s back, I tapped my own ear to signal her.
“Ah… Oh. I’m sorry. I tried to be careful, but I slipped…”
It seemed Oba-chan had unconsciously slipped up and mentioned Knight-chan’s name while getting caught up in the conversation, though she’d initially referred to her as “Her Highness.”
I can’t hear her name.
“It’s fine. Don’t worry about it. Just keep in mind that I can’t hear names, that’s all. If anything, I’m the one who should apologize for making you feel self-conscious.”
“…You’ve got nothing to apologize for.”
With a crumpled expression, Oba-chan muttered, “I’ll go get more water,” and retreated to the back of the counter.
It’s tough seeing someone as cheerful and kind as Oba-chan make a face like that.
“Urgh, blrraaagh…”
“Alright, alright. There, there.”
Never mind. This is clearly tougher right now.
This one eats a lot, so she really throws up a lot too…
—
“I’m so sorry! I apologize! I deeply regret this!”
“Wow, that’s the full course of apologies.”
Once Red Hair-chan recovered, we thanked the innkeeper Oba-chan and headed to Knight-chan’s estate.
“You don’t need to apologize. Are you feeling better now? All cleared out?”
“Yes! I threw up everything, so I feel great now!”
With a triumphant fist pump, Red Hair-chan struck a gutsy pose. Well, it’s true that once you’ve thrown up everything, you tend to feel better. Speaking from personal experience, like that time I was drinking with Necromancer-san. That person’s alcohol tolerance is absolutely insane.
“By the way, Hero-san.”
“Yeah?”
“Knight-san is the person you’ve spent the most time with, right?”
“That’s right.”
“Where did you first meet her?”
“Well, we met at the knight academy, then got expelled.”
“Expelled!? Why?”
“Well, you know… I had a bit of a reckless phase back then…”
Yeah, I dropped out of high school. My academic record is pretty bad. Once we’re done with this whole situation, maybe I’ll ask Sage-chan if she can help me get into a magic school or something…
“Anyway, after that, we formed a party and started adventuring together. We’ve basically been together ever since, so… it’s been about six years now.”
“Wow, that’s amazing! What kind of person is she?”
“First off, she’s ridiculously strong.”
“Uh-huh.”
“Next, she’s beautiful.”
“Oh, wow.”
“And, she’s the third princess of a neighboring kingdom.”
“Eh!? She’s a princess?”
“Didn’t I mention that before?”
“No, you didn’t! I can’t believe she comes from such a noble family… So you’ve been traveling with a princess for over six years?”
“Pretty much.”
“That’s incredible…”
For some reason, Red Hair-chan slumped her shoulders and stiffened.
“I don’t know anything about neighboring kingdoms because of my amnesia, but…”
“Yeah, that makes sense.”
“This might be the first time I’m meeting a real princess.”
“You could’ve met one before losing your memory.”
“There you go again with your nitpicking logic, Hero-san!”
As she playfully swatted at me, I parried her hands while guiding us off the main road and onto a side path. The number of houses and shops dwindled, and fields stretched far and wide. In fact, by this point, it was all fields.
“…It feels like we’re heading away from the town center. Is this the right way?”
“Yeah, it’s right. We’ll see her soon.”
“Ugh… I’m really starting to feel nervous. What if I say something rude? Hero-san, you’ll back me up, right?”
“Don’t worry about it.”
Despite her amnesia, Red Hair-chan is polite and well-mannered, so I’m not concerned. She’s good at communicating, even when meeting someone for the first time. Sage-chan? She’s still mentally a brat, so she’s an exception.
“Hey! Hero-kun! Over here!”
A loud voice boomed from the middle of the fields, making Red Hair-chan jump and turn around.
Even from a distance, it was clear she was tall for a woman. Her long, lustrous blonde hair was tied up at the back, gleaming like freshly harvested golden grain.
I raised my hand and shouted back.
“I figured you’d be here!”
“Haha! You’ve still got great instincts! I was planning to wait at the estate and give you a proper welcome, but we’re short-handed, so I came out to help with the harvest. Sorry about that!”
“Still working hard as always!”
“Of course! I am the lord of this land!”
She wore simple work clothes no different from the townsfolk, a slightly oversized hat, dark blue pants that hid dirt well, and a towel draped around her neck to wipe away sweat.
“Is… is that really a princess…?”
Yeah, I get why Red Hair-chan looks so confused.
“Our party’s knight princess is a super down-to-earth and kind person.”
