Chapter 31: The Heir Wants to Make Up With Her
On the way, Cui Wanwan happened to run into the Heir, Ling Xun.
The young man raised his hand excitedly and waved at her from afar the moment he saw her.
Cui Wanwan averted her gaze, pretending not to notice.
“Wanwan! Wanwan, why are you ignoring me?” Ling Xun panicked and quickly rushed over, running up beside her.
“Wanwan, you haven’t talked to me for days. I’m sorry about what happened last time, okay? Don’t be mad anymore, alright?”
“Hm? Little sister Wanwan? Come on, give me a smile. Why did you return the apology gifts I sent to the Cui Mansion?” Ling Xun kept chattering nonstop.
These childhood sweethearts had always argued growing up, but they made up just as quickly. So when Ling Xun stormed off in a huff that day, he hadn’t taken it seriously.
In the boy’s heart, it was just a small quarrel. Both were angry in the moment, and after a few days it would be forgotten.
But what he hadn’t expected was that this time, Wanwan seemed especially angry.
She had actually ignored him completely.
Even the gifts he’d given her were all returned.
Except for that little pony, everything else was sent back to the princely estate.
Oh no, wait, the pony seemed to have been purchased by her.
Because along with the returned gifts, there had been quite a few silver notes included.
“Wanwan, are you trying to cut ties with me?” The boy grew so anxious that he scratched his head on the spot, then simply grabbed hold of her.
Cui Wanwan practiced martial arts, and Ling Xun did too. His skills were no worse than hers, so when he grabbed her like that, she really couldn’t shake him off.
“Let go!” Cui Wanwan frowned and said coldly.
“No!” Ling Xun shamelessly refused. “I won’t let go. If I do, you’ll really never speak to me again.”
He grinned cheekily and moved closer to her, shaking her arm back and forth.
“Come on, Wanwan, don’t be angry anymore, okay? Let’s make up, alright? I’ll give you all the delicious and fun things I have.”
Cui Wanwan struggled a few times, but the brute was too strong and absolutely refused to let go. She couldn’t break free even with force. She was so exasperated by his shamelessness that she couldn’t help but laugh.
But then she thought of something, and her expression turned cold again. She glared at him seriously and asked,
“Then what if Wei Qingyu sees? Will you give it to her, or to me?”
Hearing her drag Wei Qingyu into the conversation again, Ling Xun felt his head throb. But thinking that little fairy might also like fun trinkets, he replied,
“Can’t I just give you sisters half each?”
“No!” Cui Wanwan’s anger flared instantly. She smacked the back of the boy’s head.
“If you give it to her, then don’t give it to me. If you give it to me, then don’t give it to her. Pick one.”
“Wanwan, don’t be so unreasonable.” Ling Xun had no idea what deep hatred existed between these two sisters that made things so hostile between them. As a straightforward young man, he truly wanted to mend the relationship.
“Alright, you can scram now.” Cui Wanwan’s face was cold as she fiercely tried to pry off the “clingy plaster” stuck to her arm. But the more she pushed him away, the tighter he clung.
As the saying goes, if a person has no shame, they’re invincible.
In short, Ling Xun had come today with one goal:
To make up with Wanwan. Even if the sky fell, he wouldn’t let her go until she agreed to reconcile.
“Okay, okay, it’s all yours. I won’t give anything to the little fairy, alright? Even if she really, really likes it, it’ll still all be yours, Wanwan. No one can take it from you.” Ling Xun could only compromise.
“As if I care about your things.” For some reason, Cui Wanwan’s expression grew darker and darker. She glared at the boy like a starving wolf eyeing a fat rabbit, on the verge of biting him to death the next second.
“Why are you getting even angrier?” Ling Xun felt this little lady was truly hard to appease, especially the grown-up version of his little sister Wanwan.
When they were kids, a few sweet words could fix any argument.
But the current Cui Wanwan was becoming more and more like a tigress.
“Don’t call her ‘little fairy’ in front of me again. I hate Wei Qingyu. I absolutely loathe her!” Cui Wanwan continued to glare at him in irritation and snapped, “If you don’t let go, I’ll chop off your paw!”
Ling Xun immediately let go, pouting a little with grievance, but still unwilling to give up.
“Wanwan, why do you hate little, Wei Qingyu so much? Aren’t you two sisters?”
The boy was totally baffled. At first, under Wanwan’s influence, he too hadn’t liked Wei Qingyu. But after spending time with her day after day, he found her gentle, kind, and pure, like a fairy in a painting with every smile and every frown. He couldn’t take his eyes off her.
He got along well with Wei Qingyu, so he thought Wanwan must surely like her too.
After all, he was just an outsider to Wei Qingyu, but Wanwan was her sister in name.
“Let’s stop being friends.” Cui Wanwan didn’t bother explaining to this blockhead and rolled her eyes. “Don’t come looking for me again. If you’re going to look for someone, go find your little fairy.”
Watching Cui Wanwan’s resolute back as she walked away, the dignified Heir squatted down in place, feeling downcast and aggrieved for quite a while.
Only after turning the corner did Cui Wanwan finally stop, leaning against the red wall and looking up at the distant sky.
What happened between her and Ling Xun wasn’t exactly a complete fallout.
It was more like two kids in a game, getting red-faced and quarreling.
She didn’t know how to explain it to him, and even if she did, she knew he wouldn’t believe her, so she might as well leave it as is.
She didn’t know whether the road ahead would be smooth and bright or full of thorns and obstacles. But in her past life, Ling Xun had never stood on her side even once. In this life, that wouldn’t change either.
Cui Wanwan, reborn, had already tried her best. Those three years they spent together in the jianghu were proof of her efforts.
But with Wei Qingyu’s arrival, just a casual wave of her finger had carved out a significant place in Ling Xun’s heart, and Cui Wanwan had chosen to back down.
For the sake of the decades of past affection, she wouldn’t blame him for the misery and torment of her past life.
But only up to that point.
From now on, the mountains were high, the roads were long, there would never again be an intersection between them.
To end up as familiar strangers would be the best conclusion.
———
It was Wei Qingyu’s first time attending a court banquet in ancient times. The sight of music and dancing, with its splendor and celebration, made her look around curiously, touching this and peeking at that.
“Whose household’s young lady is this? So lacking in manners, she looks like some clueless country girl.” A woman’s mocking laughter drifted over.
Wei Qingyu’s expression instantly turned cold. She turned around, and her vicious gaze stabbed at that young woman’s face like a dagger.
“You… you, you!” That girl hadn’t expected that the one who turned around would possess a fairy-like beauty, yet harbor such a venomous gaze. That kind of ferocity didn’t match the heavenly looks at all.
Lin Qingqing paled in fright at the sight of Wei Qingyu’s malicious expression, falling into silence.
She didn’t know it yet, but Wei Qingyu had already marked her for death.
“System, I want her dead.”
【Don’t worry, dear Host. You’ve already absorbed all of the heroine’s aura. Lin Qingqing is just a disposable extra, not even worthy of being called a supporting role. Now that she’s offended a host blessed with heroine aura and destiny, she’s guaranteed to make a fool of herself at today’s banquet.】

A while later.
The Emperor and Empress Dowager arrived together.
Everyone knelt and paid their respects.
The Emperor stroked his beard with a broad smile and waved his hand in a genial tone, “All of you, rise.”
Cui Wanwan turned her head and looked around but didn’t see Wei Qingyu. She figured the girl must be aiming for some kind of grand “finale” entrance, trying to stun everyone with her appearance.
Once the Empress Dowager was seated, her gaze swept across the crowd.
As the ultimate victor of the previous generation’s palace struggles, once her son had secured the throne, she withdrew from all worldly matters, choosing to stay in the royal temple year-round, devoted to chanting scriptures and worship.
She only made rare appearances, mainly at major family banquets and the annual palace feast.
It had been some time since she last came out, and many of the younger generation had grown noticeably, with some even reaching the age to discuss marriage.
Truly, time spares no one.
She, an old woman, had grown frail with age.
The young ones being stared at by the Empress Dowager mostly lowered their heads, not daring to meet her eyes. Well-behaved, yes, but far too timid. The Empress Dowager couldn’t help but sigh.
Even her grandsons were either idly eating pastries or huddled in groups chatting about who-knows-what. Even the few slightly more presentable ones seemed to wish they could bury their heads in the cracks of the floor under her gaze.
Just then, a young girl met the Empress Dowager’s gaze directly with a bright, radiant smile.
The girl was vivid and beautiful, standing with grace. When she noticed the Empress Dowager’s inquisitive look, not only did she show no fear, but she even responded with a smile.
