- Chapter 14 - A Fox Host’s Reckless Pursuit
Li Cheng: Now I’m definitely not tired anymore.
People like him must pull this kind of stunt all the time.
But today he ran into me. Tough luck.
Li Cheng accepted the glass of wine, swirling it lightly in his hand before lifting his lips into a bright, teasing smile.
“I’m the type who enjoys making friends.”
Yan Li’s eyes gleamed with pride. “This wine costs a hundred thousand. It’s especially sweet—try it.”
Li Cheng looked down at the gently rippling liquid in the glass, just about to pretend to take a sip—
When suddenly, someone pushed through the crowd behind him and snatched the glass right out of his hand.
Then, that same person barked coldly at Yan Li: “Get lost!”
That voice—it sounded strangely familiar.
Li Cheng turned his head and, to his surprise, saw Yan Xun standing there. He had no idea when the man had arrived.
The moment Yan Li saw him, his confident expression crumbled. “Ah—so it’s Young Master Yan you’ve got your eye on. My apologies, I won’t get in the way.”
With that, Yan Li turned and hurried off as if his clothes had caught fire.
Li Cheng’s gaze flicked toward Yan Xun, only to be met by the man’s thunderous expression.
Yan Xun’s voice was ice-cold. “What are you doing here?”
He slammed the glass down hard on the bar counter beside them.
The spilled wine spread across the surface like something seething and alive.
Before Li Cheng could answer, Yan Xun snapped again:
“You drink whatever random person hands you? Are you stupid, or do you think everyone in this place is trustworthy?”
At those words, Li Cheng’s eyes glimmered faintly.
If Yan Xun was this upset… didn’t that mean he cared?
At least ten percent, maybe.
Taking advantage of the dim lights and blaring music around them, Li Cheng decided to feign deafness.
He leaned in closer to Yan Xun, brushing up against him, his breath grazing the man’s ear.
“What did you say? It’s too loud in here—I couldn’t hear you.”
“I came to find you…”
“Hey—” Before he could finish, he felt his wrist being seized. Yan Xun yanked him out of the bar without another word.
Once outside, the noise faded instantly.
Yan Xun released his grip and scolded, “Go home.”
“Then come home with me,” Li Cheng countered.
Yan Xun’s eyes flashed with irritation. “Since when do you get to tell me what to do?”
Hearing that, Li Cheng grew unexpectedly sincere. “I’d love to, if you’d let me.”
He paused, adding softly, “Go home, and I’ll cook for you.”
Yan Xun’s mouth twitched into a tight smile that made him look like he wanted to punch someone.
“Li Cheng, we’re business partners right now. You should drop these ridiculous fantasies of yours.”
“Stop wasting your time trying to please me.”
Before Li Cheng could say another word, Yan Xun turned and started heading back toward the bar.
Seeing that, Li Cheng followed him in.
Yan Xun took two quick steps forward, but Li Cheng sidestepped him, forcing him against the wall.
Yan Xun’s voice was sharp, edged with reprimand. “I told you to go home. This isn’t a place for you.”
“You do your thing, I’ll do mine. Why do you care what I do?” Li Cheng said, stepping forward until his foot landed between Yan Xun’s—
A stance that was far too close, far too daring.
Yan Xun was forced to retreat, step by step, until he finally snapped,
“Fine! Keep following me. Just don’t come crying to me when someone drugs your drink next time.”
Li Cheng arched a brow. “Don’t worry—if someone drugs me, I’ll come find you for the antidote.”
Yan Xun: Shit! He really does like me! He even followed me here!
He decided it was time to crush that illusion once and for all.
He could never like a man.
Yan Xun turned his head slightly, meeting Li Cheng’s eyes. “Don’t waste your time on me. I’m never going to like you.”
“Oh.” Li Cheng nodded. “You don’t like me now… doesn’t mean you won’t later.”
Yan Xun stared at him, incredulous.
He’s this sure of himself?
Then, an idea struck him—one that gave him the upper hand again.
He grabbed Li Cheng’s hand and pressed it against his own chest.
Li Cheng’s eyes widened, mind going blank for a second. He instinctively tried to pull away, but Yan Xun held him tighter.
With a faintly mocking glint in his eyes, Yan Xun said, “If it’s this body you like so much, go after Yan Jin instead. You’d have a much easier time seducing him.”
He leaned down slightly, eyes level with Li Cheng’s. “He likes your type.”
Li Cheng’s mouth twitched almost imperceptibly.
But he wasn’t about to back down.
“Mm.” He nodded slowly, meeting Yan Xun’s gaze head-on, his eyes dark and steady as a lake.
“If he likes me… then you like me too. You’re the same person.”
Their gazes locked—
Tension thick in the air.
A silent standoff.
In the end, Yan Xun was the first to look away.
He gritted out, “If he likes you, what the hell’s that got to do with me?”
Then, without another glance, he turned and strode back toward the bar.
Li Cheng followed him inside.
He found a seat at the bar counter, watching from afar as Yan Xun drank with a few others in a booth.
Li Cheng sighed quietly.
What am I supposed to do with a husband this wild?
Should I keep him company?
No, no. I’ll straighten him out.
He slipped off his mask, pulled up the hood of his oversized sweatshirt, and sat quietly in a dim corner.
The hoodie was big enough to hide his sharp, beautiful features completely.
He tilted his head toward the bartender. “Give me the prettiest drink you’ve got.”
He paused. “I like red.”
The bartender nodded and mixed him a Crimson Tail.
“It’s a bit strong,” the bartender warned softly.
“That’s fine. It’s beautiful,” Li Cheng murmured, gazing at the drink.
It looked like molten lava melting through ice—romantic, dangerous, and captivating beneath the dim lights.
He took a sip. Then another.
“Another.”
The bartender served him a Blue Glacier next.
One drink after another, until Li Cheng finally felt the alcohol hit him.
He’d always loved drinking, even in the Heavenly Realm.
That weightless, drifting feeling—it helped him forget things.
He twirled his glass, sighing.
Why give him such a ridiculous mission?
I don’t even like Yan Xun.
I don’t want to seduce him.
Ah-Keng, his system companion, was dumbfounded for a moment—it was clear Li Cheng was drunk.
【Fox Host, to you, Yan Xun is merely one vessel in the vast sea of mortals. You shouldn’t let him weigh on your heart.】
Li Cheng exhaled deeply, taking another sip. But I’m a fox.
A nine-tailed fox that can only love one person in its lifetime.
“I don’t want to toy with someone’s feelings,” he muttered. “That’s unfair to him… and to me.”
【But if you don’t save him, he’ll die. Yan Xun’s stubborn. You don’t have to like him. Just… think of it as saving Yan Jin instead, Fox Host.】
【He’s gentle, kind, and still so young. It’d be such a waste for him to die early.】
Yan Jin…
Li Cheng tilted his head slightly.
Yan Jin really was a good person—gentle, always smiling, never angry.
“I’ll think of it as saving Yan Jin then,” he mumbled. “It’d be such a pity if someone that good died.”
Come to think of it, wasn’t Yan Xun just Yan Jin, but twisted?
A corrupted version of him.
Li Cheng swirled the last of his drink. “I’m tired. I’ll go back first.”
I’ll chase him again tomorrow.
He pointed toward Yan Xun’s booth and told the bartender, “Put my tab under his name.”
Then he slid off the stool, adjusted his mask, and headed for the exit.
From across the room, Yan Xun caught sight of Li Cheng’s departing figure—
And the three or four tall men trailing after him.
His irritation flared instantly. He shoved aside a man offering him another drink. “Excuse me, Mr. Wu. I’ve got to step out for a moment.”
Without waiting for a response, he hurried out.
The moment Li Cheng stepped through the bar’s doors, he felt it—someone was following him.
He’d been in a bad mood already, and this just made it worse.
He turned quickly.
Four men were approaching, pretending it was just coincidence.
They must’ve been with Chen Qiu.
They’d gone into the bar earlier, and now that he’d stepped out, they’d followed.
Annoying.
He didn’t want to fight.
He just wanted to kill.
【Fox Host, there are paparazzi nearby. I advise against taking action.】
Great. Now he was even more annoyed.
He watched as one of the men pulled something from the bushes nearby.
【Fox Host, steel rods. Threat level: ★★★.】
Li Cheng inhaled sharply—then bolted.
The men behind him immediately gave chase.
Yan Xun stepped outside just in time to see them—four men with metal bars chasing after Li Cheng.
“Damn it!”
When it came to Li Cheng, he really couldn’t stop himself from meddling.
So, of course, he ran after them.
Li Cheng sprinted down a narrow alley before stopping abruptly. “No paparazzi here, right?”
【Paparazzi were 300 meters away when you left the bar. They’re now 30 meters away.】
【Rooftop, side building.】
Li Cheng: “…What?!”
(t/n: “Yan Xun” and “Yan Jin” refer to two personas of the same individual.)
