- Chapter 16 - Blood and Unspoken Fire
Li Cheng’s head whipped around just in time to see the steel rod spinning through the air like a blur of shadow.
He had always seen himself as someone strong, someone who didn’t need protection.
And yet, when danger came, his first instinct was to protect Yan Xun.
As a celestial god, he couldn’t possibly let a mortal be injured for his sake.
But more importantly—this mortal was his future wife.
He had to protect him.
The steel rod was moving too fast for him to think.
In the blink of an eye, Li Cheng lunged forward and shoved Yan Xun hard to the side.
“Watch out!”
Because of the shove, his footing shifted—one step closer to where Yan Xun had been.
He didn’t have time to dodge.
The steel rod struck the back of his head with a deafening clang.
“Bang—!”
Li Cheng felt an itch burn across the back of his neck, and his whole head throbbed with sharp, numbing pain.
The force knocked him forward a few steps.
He raised a trembling hand to touch the back of his neck.
It came away wet. When he brought it before his eyes, his fingertips were red.
Blood.
No wonder his head felt so dizzy.
[Fox Host, you’re bleeding!]
Li Cheng frowned and glanced up, catching the panic in Yan Xun’s eyes.
It looked… almost like his wife felt sorry for him.
[Detecting host injury. System entering automatic sleep mode.]
[Shutting down in 3… 2… 1…]
[Shutdown complete.]
Before the voice even faded, Li Cheng’s vision went black.
He fell forward, completely unconscious.
The only thing he felt before everything faded away—was warmth.
He must’ve fallen into Yan Xun’s arms.
That’s why it didn’t hurt.
Yan Xun stared at the man in his arms, at the blood soaking the back of his neck. His expression turned cold and vicious as he looked up at the men who had chased them down.
He didn’t know what he was feeling—only that it was violent and uncontrollable.
For the first time in his life, he wanted to kill someone.
Li Cheng had been hurt protecting him.
He had felt that steel rod cut through the air just inches from his back—right before Li Cheng shoved him aside.
Yan Xun’s hand moved almost on instinct. He pulled out a compact handgun and raised it straight at the attackers.
His gaze was cold enough to flay skin—murderous, and disturbingly calm.
The men froze.
The leader stopped so fast that the dust beneath his shoes scattered into the air.
“Shit!”
“He’s got a gun, boss!” one of them stammered, taking a step back.
The leader’s eyes darted between Yan Xun’s gun and the man’s icy expression. The weapon didn’t look fake—and Li Cheng was already down.
That meant their job was done.
If they stuck around, things could turn bad fast.
“Retreat!”
The group bolted without another word.
Yan Xun didn’t chase.
He had plenty of ways to make them pay later.
Right now, he just needed to get Li Cheng to a hospital.
Besides—
there were no bullets in the gun.
They were in the capital of Country C, and what he’d just done already counted as a serious violation of the law.
Yan Xun’s heartbeat thundered as he looked down at the unconscious Li Cheng in his arms.
“Li Cheng?” he called softly, voice trembling.
“Can you hear me? Are you okay? Li Cheng?”
No answer.
Panic surged through him.
He scooped Li Cheng into his arms, carrying him bridal-style, and broke into a sprint.
Thud… thud… thud…
Each heartbeat echoed in his ears, tight and burning.
It hurt.
This… this was something entirely new.
With Li Cheng in his arms, Yan Xun ran down a street blazing with neon lights, his expression pale and tense.
They reached the main road—traffic roared past in waves.
It was the first time Yan Xun had ever hated a red light.
Blood kept flowing from the wound.
Li Cheng showed no sign of waking.
Just as Yan Xun was about to dart across against the light, another thought struck him.
Li Cheng’s identity—and this situation—were both too sensitive.
His eyes narrowed.
He hailed a passing taxi and climbed in, cradling Li Cheng in his arms.
“Pingjin Private Hospital!” he ordered sharply.
“Hurry!”
The driver glanced in the mirror, startled by the tone.
“Alright, alright—don’t worry. I’ll take the side roads. Ten minutes, tops!”
Yan Xun pressed Li Cheng’s head against his shoulder, his breath coming fast.
His hand, slick with blood, trembled as he removed his jacket and pressed it to the wound.
He didn’t know if it would help—but he had to do something.
Even though the driver was speeding, every second felt unbearably slow.
He glanced down at Li Cheng again.
Those soft, normally rosy lips were now pale.
Yan Xun’s other hand fumbled for his phone and dialed a number.
The call connected after two rings.
“Well, well, what a surprise! Young Master Yan calling me?” a young voice teased.
“Wen Xingye, I’ve got an unconscious patient here. I’m on my way to your hospital right now.”
“A patient?” Wen’s tone immediately grew serious.
“Is there bleeding? External trauma?”
“Head injury,” Yan Xun answered tightly.
“He’s unconscious.”
Hearing the tension in Yan Xun’s voice, Wen Xingye quickly reassured him:
“Don’t panic. Bring him straight in. I’ll open a priority channel for you.”
“I’m almost there.”
Yan Xun hung up.
When they arrived, Wen Xingye had already arranged everything.
It was late, the hospital quiet, and the transfer went smoothly.
Li Cheng was still unconscious when they wheeled him into the emergency room.
Half an hour later, Wen Xingye stepped out.
Yan Xun rushed over. “How is he?”
“Cerebral contusion and laceration—external trauma. Nothing too serious. We’ve already bandaged it.”
“Then why hasn’t he woken up yet?” Yan Xun pressed.
“Head injuries can easily cause temporary loss of consciousness,” Wen replied calmly.
He paused, then added, “But don’t worry. His vitals are stable. He should wake up soon.”
Yan Xun exhaled, the tension in his chest finally loosening a little.
Wen studied him for a moment, his gaze curious.
“So… you really are involved with that celebrity, huh?”
That question pulled Yan Xun back to reality.
Pingjin Private Hospital was famous for its confidentiality and top-tier specialists—especially Wen Xingye, the youngest neurosurgeon in the capital, renowned for his talent.
Yan Xun’s eyes lifted. His voice was firm.
“Make sure this doesn’t get out. It’ll ruin his career.”
A public fight—even if justified—was enough to destroy a star’s reputation.
Wen raised a hand in mock surrender.
“Relax. As long as you keep quiet, no one will know he was ever here.”
“When can he be discharged?”
“Hmm…” Wen drew out the sound thoughtfully.
“He can leave as soon as he wakes. He’s a public figure, after all. I’ll assign a live-in physician for follow-up care if you’d like.”
“I want you.”
Wen coughed lightly.
“That’s… not appropriate. I’ve got a wife, remember?”
Yan Xun’s tone snapped. “Don’t be an idiot. I mean I want you to be his live-in doctor.”
Wen rubbed at his nose, stifling a laugh.
“You’re really that invested? You want me to personally play house doctor?”
He tilted his head, smirking. “Huh. Haven’t seen you this serious before. What is it—actually like him?”
Yan Xun’s brows furrowed instantly. The word like hit something raw.
No way. Impossible.
Li Cheng only got hurt saving him—that was all.
This was guilt, nothing else.
“Tch. How could I possibly like him?”
“Then why are you pacing holes into my floor?” Wen shot back with amusement.
“You’ve been walking back and forth like a man in labor. Anyone watching would think your wife’s giving birth in there.”
Yan Xun froze for a second, glaring. Wife giving birth, my ass.
But he couldn’t come up with a retort. So instead, he redirected the conversation sharply:
“Cut the crap. I wasn’t asking for your opinion.”
Wen folded his arms and relented with a small grin.
“Alright, alright. I’m on break anyway. I can stay at your place a couple days. But my fees aren’t cheap.”
“Spare me the small talk,” Yan Xun snapped.
