- Chapter 21 - The Man Behind the Glasses
Li Cheng lifted his head to look at Yan Jin, surprise flickering across his face. So this was what they meant by “same soup, different bowl”?
Then again, he suddenly sensed something else—Yan Jin’s two personalities seemed to overlap in certain ways. The difference was just that one was more polite, the other more rough around the edges.
Because when Yan Jin spoke just now, Li Cheng had clearly heard a hint of that same forceful, commanding tone—cold, even.
Wen Xingye slung his medical bag over his shoulder and scoffed. “You really don’t waste time biting the hand that feeds you.”
Then he looked at Li Cheng. “Both of his personalities are so damn fierce. How do you even deal with that?”
Hearing this, Li Cheng immediately realized that Wen Xingye and Yan Jin must not have a simple friendship—very few people knew about Yan Jin’s dual personality.
But he shook his head slightly; he didn’t agree. To him, Yan Jin was gentle—hardly fierce at all.
Li Cheng smiled lightly. “You do what you have to to survive.”
Wen Xingye burst out laughing. “Hahaha! Yan Jin, did you hear that? He said he’s doing it to survive!” His voice dripped with mockery.
Yan Jin’s gaze went cold, the kind of chill that could slice a man in half: What are you laughing at? Your wife ran off eight years ago. You really think you’re in a position to mock me?
Wen Xingye had always been able to read Yan Jin’s expressions almost telepathically. Even if he didn’t catch every nuance, he got the gist.
He glared back: You don’t have a wife either!
Yan Jin stood from his seat, smiling faintly, though his voice was icy enough to freeze a room. “Let me see you out.”
“No need,” Wen Xingye quickly waved him off, half laughing. “I couldn’t possibly trouble you—I’ll see myself out.”
Watching Wen Xingye’s retreating back, Li Cheng couldn’t help but feel that something was… off about Yan Jin.
When the door shut, Li Cheng finally dared to take a closer look at him.
He’d changed clothes again—this time into a sharply tailored charcoal-gray shirt that framed his broad shoulders and narrow waist to perfection. Every line of his body exuded power and restraint, the fabric barely containing it.
And sure enough, he was wearing glasses again.
Li Cheng blinked for a moment before muttering inwardly to Ah Keng, “Hey, I don’t get it. Is he nearsighted or not? Why does Yan Jin wear glasses, but Yan Xun doesn’t?”
【He is nearsighted, but his prescription isn’t high. Yan Xun just refuses to wear them because he thinks glasses make him look less cool.】
Li Cheng: “???” That did sound exactly like something Yan Xun would do.
With his glasses on, Yan Jin looked softer, more refined. The air around him carried a calm, dignified elegance—one that seemed just out of reach.
Li Cheng tilted his head, thoughtful. “I actually prefer him with glasses.”
【Why?】
“Because it makes him look less… overpowering.”
【Fox Host, it seems you still don’t truly understand Yan Jin.】
Li Cheng frowned, puzzled. “What do you mean…? You’re not saying he’s secretly a wolf in sheep’s clothing, are you?”
【I don’t know about that, but I can tell you this much—just like Yan Xun, deep down he only knows how to be the dominant one.】
At that, Li Cheng nearly exploded. He kicked the leg of the coffee table hard. “Who asked you to bring that up?! Me, a celestial being, yield to a human? Not happening!”
He flopped back onto the couch, muttering under his breath. “Forget it. I’m done trying to ‘win over’ Yan Xun. I’m moving out of this villa today.”
【It’s a side mission. You have to complete it.】
Li Cheng let out a long, exasperated sigh—only to glance up and see Yan Jin walking away. Half a minute later, he returned to the sofa carrying a small dessert.
He placed it on the table and said gently, “If you’re hungry, have this first. I’m making dinner.”
Li Cheng didn’t take the cake, but Yan Jin calmly set it down in front of him anyway.
Then, after a pause, he asked, “What do you like to eat?”
Li Cheng pointed toward the kitchen. “I bought some groceries yesterday at the market—they’re all things I like. You can use whatever you want.”
A small smile tugged at Yan Jin’s lips. His tone was mild and steady, soothing to the ear. “Alright.”
“Do you like spicy food?”
“Yeah.”
“Sweet?” Yan Jin asked again.
“Not really.”
“Got it.” Yan Jin turned toward the kitchen, pausing after two steps to glance back. “Give me half an hour.”
Then he disappeared behind the glass door of the kitchen. From the living room, Li Cheng could see everything clearly—the fitted apron, the confident posture.
“A macho man in the kitchen,” he thought dryly.
He was skeptical. A spoiled rich kid cooking? If he could cook at all, it probably wouldn’t taste good.
Still, Li Cheng decided he’d be ready to “fix” dinner himself afterward if needed.
While Yan Jin worked, Li Cheng lounged on the sofa, scrolling through Weibo. His notifications had exploded—probably because the studio had posted a statement about his “illness.”
Fans filled the comments with worry and affection: What happened to Oppa? Please rest, we’re worried! Check in soon!
Even though Li Cheng wasn’t super famous, he had his share of die-hard fans.
He glanced at the trending list—the studio’s “denial of relationship rumors” post had hit the hot topics.
Clicking into it, he saw the brief official post: [Thank you for your concern. Li Cheng is currently single and not in a relationship.]
He scrolled through the comments—
Burnt Bunny: Good! At least no one can say we’re not good enough for him!
Li Cheng frowned. What, dating Yan Jin would be me “marrying up”?
Did Cheng-ge break up today?: Maybe they split last night? [dog emoji] Either way, still rooting for you, baby!
Jin-ge’s Little Darling is Cheng-Cheng: I’ll bet a thousand bucks they’re just pretending to deny it. It’s totally real!
Li Cheng smirked. What kind of ridiculous usernames are these?
Caged Pig: So he just rides the wave and denies it? Disgusting. No wonder he’s not popular—these effeminate artists should all be banned. Bad influence on kids!
That comment had a long, highly upvoted reply underneath it. Curious, Li Cheng clicked.
It was from a user named Little Fox—and it was scathingly sharp:
Little Fox: @Caged Pig According to Section 672 of the Criminal Code of Country C, online verbal harassment, slander, and defamation now fall under criminal offenses. Conviction can result in imprisonment from two to five years, surveillance, or detention. Expect a lawyer’s letter soon.
The tone was so serious it almost sounded like a studio burner account.
Li Cheng couldn’t help but quietly like the comment. Consider it a silent thank-you to this loyal fan.
After all, no one knew about his alt account anyway.
Stretching on the sofa, he remembered he still hadn’t posted anything himself.
He opened his camera, snapped a couple of selfies, and sent them to Wang Qi.
The reply came back instantly: “Are you trying to scare people with that face? Look at those angles! Post that and you’ll lose fans, not gain them.”
Li Cheng frowned, studying the photo. Was it really that bad?
He thought it looked fine.
【Fox Host, why don’t you ask Yan Jin to take one for you?】
Li Cheng perked up. “You know what, that’s actually not a bad idea.”
He grabbed his phone and headed toward the kitchen. The moment he opened the door, the rich aroma of stewed meat hit him.
He blinked, surprised—Yan Jin could actually cook, and by the looks of it, the food smelled incredible.
Sensing someone behind him, Yan Jin turned around.
The scene was almost comical—steam from the pot had fogged up his glasses completely.
Li Cheng couldn’t hold back a laugh. “Can you even see right now?”
Yan Jin chuckled softly and took off his glasses.
“Here, let me clean them for you.” Li Cheng took them from his hand and went to the living room to wipe the lenses carefully with a cloth.
He decided this could count as his “payment” for the meal—a god personally cleaning your glasses? Not bad.
When he returned to the kitchen, just as he was about to hand the glasses back—
A piece of meat appeared in front of his lips.
Li Cheng froze, wide-eyed. Yan Jin stood there holding a pair of chopsticks, a chunk of perfectly stewed pork nestled between them.
His other hand rested just beneath Li Cheng’s chin, catching any potential drips.
The scene looked exactly like a parent coaxing a child to eat.
Li Cheng was about to step back when Yan Jin’s voice came, low and calm: “Try it—see if it’s too salty.”
Li Cheng hesitated, then licked his lips and took a small bite.
The next second, his eyes lit up. The meat was rich but not greasy, tender and fragrant with just the right sweetness.
He quickly ate the rest in one bite.
Yan Jin’s lips curved into a faint smile, his tone warm. “Good?”
“Delicious!” Li Cheng’s eyes sparkled.
Yan Jin nodded, scooping some rice into a bowl and topping it with a few more pieces of meat.
He handed it to Li Cheng and glanced toward the dining table. “I also made a vegetable salad—it’s on the table. Eat first if you’re hungry.”
Li Cheng rubbed his neck, embarrassed. “Let’s eat together later. You’re making too much—we can’t finish it all.”
“It’s fine.”
Li Cheng nodded, then his gaze drifted toward the counter—Yan Jin’s phone sat dangerously close to the stove.
He stepped over to move it farther away—only to notice the screen was still on.
The search bar read: “What does Little Fox like to eat?”
Li Cheng: “……???”
