- Chapter 36 - Split Souls, Same Heartbeat
“Probably not…”
“Yan Xun doesn’t have the main personality’s memories.”
“So this doesn’t count as a successful conquest, Fox Host.”
Li Cheng: …
He glanced toward the kitchen and saw Yan Xun walking out, shrugging off his jacket with a proud, untouchable expression.
The moment Yan Xun stepped out, his gaze turned sharp as a blade. He looked straight at Yang Ming for two seconds before directing his words at Li Cheng.
“Li Cheng, I told you not to push your luck. Who gave you permission to bring people into my house?”
Yang Ming nearly jumped out of his skin. He hid behind Li Cheng, stammering, “What’s wrong with him, Li Cheng…? I—I’m scared… He looks like he’s about to hit me…”
Li Cheng stepped forward, remembering what A-Keng had said—Yan Jin kept a diary and wrote notes to himself. So he said, “Check your notes.”
Yan Xun tossed his jacket onto the couch, pulled out his phone, and opened the memo app.
His expression didn’t soften in the slightest.
He scrolled to see only one line: Bought you a new phone. It’s in your gaming room. Stop touching things on my phone without permission, or bear the consequences.
Yan Xun’s tongue pressed against his molars; his face darkened even further.
He went to the gaming room and found the new phone. The moment he unlocked it, another memo popped up automatically—seven lines in total.
-
- Yang Ming is staying for two days. I agreed. You have no right to object.
-
- I’m in a relationship with Li Cheng. Respect him, take care of him, don’t raise your voice or act harshly toward him—or I won’t forgive you.
-
- Company matters are organized in the computer folder. Handle work before playing.
-
- He likes spicy food, doesn’t like sweets, and can’t eat chocolate.
-
- The Little Fox never dries his hair after washing. You have to help him.
-
- You are not allowed to sleep with him. I forbid it.
-
- Take good care of him.
“Fuck!”
Yan Xun cursed the moment he finished reading.
Yan Jin was dating Li Cheng?
“Damn it!” For some reason, the thought filled him with irritation instead of indifference. His mood soured, a strange restlessness rising in his chest.
He strode out of the gaming room, stopping right in front of Li Cheng. “You and Yan Jin are together?”
Li Cheng’s eyes dropped slightly to the side of Yan Xun’s neck, and his expression dimmed.
The seal on Yan Xun’s chest—the Heart Barrier Spell—was still black.
They were the same person… weren’t they?
【Fox Host, they are the same person—but Yan Xun doesn’t share Yan Jin’s emotions or thoughts. You’ll have to work harder… The Heart Barrier Spell is still black.】
Li Cheng took a step closer.
He couldn’t see them as separate people. But neither could he fully see them as one.
They had the same eyes, the same brows—so why did they feel so different?
He looked straight into Yan Xun’s eyes, his tone slow and weary. “Yeah.”
“He likes me.”
The seductive glint in his foxlike eyes traced lazily across Yan Xun’s face.
Yan Xun inhaled sharply and instinctively stepped back.
He shoved Li Cheng away and turned to head upstairs.
Li Cheng stared after him, a pang of melancholy in his chest.
When he’d bitten the Lord of the Abyss in the past, that god’s Heart Barrier Spell had also been black.
Only the heartless bore that color.
His feelings for Yan Jin were real. Yan Jin had even released his ninth tail for him—so why was Yan Xun’s Heart Barrier still black?
As he drowned in thought, Yan Xun came back downstairs, now wearing a different outfit.
He looked every bit the rebellious bad boy.
Li Cheng watched as he coolly headed toward the door.
“Where are you going?”
Yan Xun tilted his head slightly, kicked Yan Jin’s leather shoes aside from the rack, and changed into a pair of white sneakers. “Do I need to report my whereabouts to you?”
A loud slam followed as the door shut behind him.
Yang Ming blinked and patted Li Cheng’s shoulder. “What’s wrong with him? Why did he suddenly flip out like that?”
Li Cheng glared at the door. “He’s full of shit.”
Yang Ming looked toward the mess in the kitchen. “So… does that mean we’re not having dinner tonight?”
“Order takeout.” Li Cheng handed him the phone.
“I’m not hungry.” His appetite was gone completely.
——
Yan Xun didn’t return until half past midnight. Yang Ming was still gaming in the other room.
Li Cheng realized he missed Yan Jin—just a little.
It was such a strange feeling.
He had never missed anyone in all his years.
Turns out missing someone could feel both joyful and miserable at once.
Thinking of him, Li Cheng drifted off on the couch, half-sitting, half-lying.
When Yan Xun entered the apartment, he saw him asleep, slumped softly against the cushions.
He shook his head. I must be losing my mind.
Still, he found himself walking over, crouching down beside the couch to take a closer look.
He was… kind of cute like this.
Not nearly this cute when awake.
Something inexplicable flickered in Yan Xun’s chest. He actually wanted to reach out and touch him.
When his fingers brushed against Li Cheng’s long, dark lashes, he froze.
He must be insane.
What the hell was he doing?
He jerked his hand back, ready to stand—
But Li Cheng suddenly grabbed his wrist.
His half-lidded eyes shimmered with sleepy confusion, mingled with warmth and a fragile sort of joy. He reached up, looped his arms around Yan Xun’s neck, and leaned into him, holding on tightly.
Li Cheng nuzzled into the crook of his neck like a small, content creature, his voice soft, sticky, and drowsy.
“Why did you take so long to come back…”
“I missed you so much…”
“Yan Jin…”
