- Chapter 58 - The Line Between Sanity and Madness
Lichen rubbed against Yan Jin’s chest, his voice soft and sweet. How could anyone not fall for this version of Yan Jin?
“That won’t happen again. I’ll always stay with you.”
Yan Jin smiled faintly. “Why is my Little Fox suddenly getting sentimental?”
Lichen was just about to say something more when the office door burst open without so much as a knock.
“Well, well—so President Yan finally got himself a new lover.”
A mocking voice cut through the air, sharp and grating enough to make anyone bristle.
Lichen, his back to the door, froze at the sound. His eyes immediately darkened.
It was Yan Shen. When he saw Lichen turn, a crooked smirk curved across his lips.
He hadn’t gotten a clear look last night—but now that he had, it really was Lichen.
“Oh, not a new lover then—an old flame.”
Yan Shen’s face was still swollen, and he was wearing a hospital gown, but those vicious, insolent eyes were just as arrogant as ever.
“Hello there, sister-in-law,” he said, looking Lichen up and down with a strange curve of his mouth.
“No wonder my brother fell for you. A treasure like you—you couldn’t find another one in ten thousand.”
Coming from Yan Shen, the words dripped with insult rather than admiration.
Yan Jin’s face darkened, the fire in his eyes barely contained. He stepped forward, blocking Lichen from view, and his voice came out cold as steel.
“Get out.”
“Hey,” Yan Shen raised his hands in mock innocence. “No need to be so unfriendly, brother. I’m just saying hello to my sister-in-law.”
Lichen’s lips curled faintly. He stepped out from behind Yan Jin and stopped just a meter away from Yan Shen.
With a polite smile, he lifted his foot—and kicked him square in the stomach.
Yan Shen crashed to the floor.
“Ah—!”
Stunned, he looked up at Lichen in disbelief.
Lichen waved his hand lazily.
“Hi. Since you called me ‘sister-in-law,’ consider that your welcoming gift.”
He tilted his chin slightly, his gaze cold and disdainful. “Do you like it?”
“You bastard! You dare hit me!” Yan Shen snarled, propping himself against the doorframe, his legs trembling.
“My apologies. You offended me first.”
Lichen folded his arms loosely, his tone casual. After a pause, he added,
“From the looks of it, your injuries weren’t even serious enough to need hospitalization. You’ve just been wasting a hospital bed. But now that I’ve given you another bruise, at least you’re not wasting public resources.”
“You little—!” Yan Shen roared, pushing off the frame and swinging a fist toward Lichen’s face.
Yan Jin yanked Lichen behind him and caught Yan Shen’s wrist in a crushing grip.
“Didn’t you hear me tell you to get out?” His voice was icy, his gaze like a blade.
With a swift twist of his wrist, Yan Jin flipped Yan Shen’s arm. The man gasped in pain. “Let go of me!”
Yan Shen ground his teeth, his voice trembling with fury.
“Yan Jin! You sent me to the hospital, and now you lay hands on me again! If Father finds out, he won’t let you off!”
Yan Jin’s expression didn’t shift. His voice was calm, almost detached, but somehow even more terrifying.
“You’re pathetic.”
Then he hurled Yan Shen bodily out of the office. “Security! Get him out of here.”
Once the door closed, Yan Jin turned back to Lichen. “Does your foot hurt?”
Lichen blinked. …He’d never seen anyone ask if the person who kicked was hurting.
He stepped closer, pointing a finger at Yan Jin’s chest. “What about you? Does your heart hurt? You’ve been carrying all that pain alone for years—doesn’t it hurt?”
Yan Jin lifted his gaze slightly but didn’t answer.
Lichen continued softly,
“I heard that when a person suffers extreme trauma—something unbearable—they can sometimes develop a second personality.”
He looked into Yan Jin’s deep eyes. “Yan Xun appeared around that time, didn’t he? He’s younger than you, freer than you. You wanted to be like him… so you created him, right?”
Yan Jin’s fingers curled tight. His expression flickered.
No one had ever seen through him like that.
And yet, hearing those words from Lichen didn’t feel like an accusation—it felt like release.
As if he’d been trapped in darkness for years, and someone suddenly reached out, grasped his hand, and whispered: I’ll pull you out.
His throat tightened painfully.
“Chengcheng…” He pulled Lichen into his arms. “Do you… think I’m a lunatic?”
“Yan Xun’s wonderful. You are too. How could either of you be crazy?”
Lichen wrapped his arms around Yan Jin’s waist, his voice drifting with emotion.
“I just wish I’d met you sooner.”
If he had, maybe he could’ve handed that crying boy on the street corner a piece of candy.
Hearing that, a faint warmth spread through Yan Jin’s chest—as though sunlight had finally reached a place long frozen over.
He took Lichen’s hand and said softly, “Back then, I wasn’t good enough. I couldn’t protect anyone.”
He brushed a hand across Lichen’s cheek. “But now, I can love you—and protect you.”
“Thank you for coming into my life, my Little Fox.”
Lichen smiled, his eyes curling like twin stars.
“You’ve always been enough. And I was always meant to find you.”
———
That day, Lichen officially signed with Qian Yue Entertainment.
The company’s official Weibo account posted: “Welcome our new artist, Lichen (@fox). Please take good care of him!”
Lichen’s comeback sent fans into a frenzy. As a beloved idol-actor, the response was overwhelmingly positive.
Soon after, production officially began for the long-delayed fantasy drama Catching Monsters.
After the styling shoot, Lichen checked his phone and saw a few unread messages from Yan Jin.
Yan Jin: Chengcheng, something came up at work. I’ll be late. The driver will pick you up.
Yan Jin: What do you want to eat?
Yan Jin: Do you miss your husband?
Lichen’s lips curved into a smile. All the fatigue of the day melted away.
He typed back: “I do. I want to sleep with President Yan.”
When he left the photo shoot, however, neither the driver nor Yan Jin’s car was in sight.
He circled the underground garage once—still no one. His brow furrowed.
The parking area was dimly lit, just two ceiling lamps flickering. The deeper he went, the darker it got.
He called out twice. No answer. He was about to head upstairs to hail a cab when his eyes narrowed.
Someone was following him.
At first, he thought it was a paparazzo.
Then A-Keng’s urgent voice echoed in his mind:
【Fox Host! Watch out! It’s a new kind of tranquilizer!】
Lichen had let his guard down, thinking it was just reporters. Before he could react, a cloud of smoke hit him square in the face.
He didn’t even see who it was before his body went weak and collapsed.
He gritted his teeth. “Keng, neutralize the drug.”
【Already done, Fox Host.】
【But system diagnostics show your arrival has altered the main storyline. You’ll need to play through this plot point. The drug’s effects are only temporarily suppressed—one hour max.】
“What plot?”
【Yan Xun will kill someone tonight.】
【Fox Host, you must prevent it. Yan Shen’s crimes warrant legal punishment—don’t let Yan Xun make a fatal mistake.】
A-Keng’s words spun through Lichen’s head.
He let himself go limp and fell to the ground.
A shadow approached step by step.
That face, that aura—there was no mistaking it. Yan Shen.
He stared down at Lichen’s motionless body and sneered.
“Weren’t you so tough before? What happened now?”
His lips twisted cruelly. “Do you know where I’m taking you?”
Lichen’s eyes were half-closed. He wanted to see just what Yan Shen intended.
He cast him a sidelong glance. Pathetic worm.
Yan Shen chuckled darkly. “By tomorrow morning, you’ll be the most famous person in the country. Hahaha…”
Thinking Lichen had fainted, he laughed wildly.
Lichen’s voice echoed silently in his mind: “Keng, call Yan Jin.”
