- Chapter 65 - The Silent Marriage Trap
Li Cheng’s gaze lingered on the document spread out on the table. He was just about to open his mouth when A-Keng’s voice suddenly screamed in his head.
【Ahhhhh! Fox Host, don’t talk!! Don’t talk!!】
Li Cheng: Why?
【Because right now, you’re mute! Totally mute! You can’t speak! Please stay in character!】
M–mute?
That tragic?
Li Cheng’s expression darkened. “Can you try being a little more professional? I can’t keep up with the act like this! Memory input, now, big brother of the system!”
【Apologies, Fox Host—right away, right away!】
A faint glimmer flashed through Li Cheng’s eyes. In an instant, fragmented memories flooded his mind, images and sensations threading together inside his consciousness.
The original host had been mute—
A powerless human living at the lowest level of the Realm of Illusions.
Self-abased, starved for love, fragile like a speck of dust.
Bullied by beasts, rejected by humans, and even fired within two days from the part-time job he’d found at a convenience store.
He often ended up bruised and bloodied.
His own father, disgusted by his “useless mute son,” had sold him to a beast-run nightclub.
Because of his pretty looks and obedient temperament, he was frequently harassed.
Even though he knew exactly what would happen to someone sold to a place like that, he had never given in.
Just yesterday, a wolf demon who’d been eyeing him for a long time came after him again.
In the struggle—
The original host bit the wolf to death.
That was the very moment Zhou Ci, the head of the Weapon Research Center, happened to walk in.
He had never seen a human capable of killing a demon with a single bite. When the original host looked at him with bloodshot eyes, Zhou Ci was instantly struck with interest.
Humans living in the lower levels of the Realm of Illusions occasionally mated with demons, but due to physiological incompatibility, such unions could never produce offspring.
But this one… was an exception unseen in millennia.
He was the child of a human and a demon.
The perfect experimental specimen.
Zhou Ci had been thrilled beyond belief—
And so, he purchased him at a high price.
Now, Li Cheng had taken the original host’s place and been bought.
Li Cheng’s hand tightened slightly. So… he wants to experiment on me?
Remembering the horrifying specimens lining the hallway, a chill crept up his spine.
【Exactly, Fox Host—dissection kind of experiment. You know, cut you open and take a look inside.】
Li Cheng: ………
He glanced back at the documents on the table—not just papers, but a kind of contract.
When he saw the title written clearly across the front—“Marriage Agreement Consent Form”—his expression turned strange.
A marriage agreement?
Wasn’t this supposed to be an experiment? What did marriage have to do with any of this?
【Fox Host, there are laws in the Realm of Illusions. Human experimentation is illegal.】
Li Cheng: So?
【Zhou Ci wants to marry you so he can live with you legally. Once he gathers proof that you’re half human, half demon, he can dissect you in broad daylight without consequence.】
Li Cheng’s eyes lifted toward Zhou Ci. So as long as he can’t find any evidence, he can’t touch me?
【Correct. The main mission is to survive safely by his side, posing as the original host. Don’t let anyone discover your true identity as half human, half demon.】
Li Cheng: But he’s already suspicious I’m not human.
【Suspicion isn’t evidence, Host. Remember—you are human. If you believe it, he can’t act against you.】
【And right now, he only suspects it. After all, in this realm, humans and demons have never produced offspring before.】
Li Cheng pressed his lips together, then raised his hands and asked in sign language: “Why?”
“Why do you want to marry me?”
The flutter of long lashes, paired with that innocent, obedient motion of his hands, made Zhou Ci pause in surprise.
His brows knit slightly.
“So you’re mute.”
No wonder he hadn’t said a single word.
Zhou Ci didn’t understand the meaning behind the gestures.
“What are you saying?”
Li Cheng lowered his gaze, looking down at his hands, nervously gripping the hem of his shirt.
Zhou Ci’s eyes followed the motion—
The boy was wearing one of his rare white shirts. His porcelain skin was almost translucent, like a perfectly crafted specimen.
Zhou Ci could already picture how that body would look submerged in formalin—
Angelic. Beautiful.
He was already itching to see the anatomy of the creature before him.
The child of man and demon—how thrilling.
His eyes would make perfect gun lenses.
His jawbone, an exquisite slingshot.
Every inch of him looked sculpted by the divine.
Zhou Ci’s gaze drifted lower—Li Cheng was barefoot, sitting on the couch.
“Give him my shoes,” Zhou Ci ordered the assistant behind him.
“Yes, sir.” The man quickly retrieved a pair of indoor slippers and brought them over.
Zhou Ci’s cold eyes lingered on Li Cheng. “Can you write?”
Li Cheng nodded.
Just as he reached for the pen and paper on the table, Zhou Ci’s hand clamped down on his wrist.
His voice was low, sharp. “Don’t scribble on that.”
Li Cheng tilted his head up slightly, then used sign language again: “Then how the hell am I supposed to communicate with you? You don’t understand my signs, you won’t let me write—are you mentally defective or what? You look decent enough, but you’re all kinds of messed up inside!”
His expression looked pitiful, completely at odds with the venom behind his gestures.
He assumed the man couldn’t understand anyway—so what harm could venting do?
But the next second, Zhou Ci tapped the back of his hand. A flash of blue light appeared, and a holographic screen materialized in front of them.
Zhou Ci spoke coldly to the flickering interface: “Translate his gestures.”
The moment he finished, the screen displayed a line of text, followed by a mechanical voice repeating every word:
“Then how the hell am I supposed to communicate with you? You don’t understand my signs, you won’t let me write—are you mentally defective or what? You look decent enough, but you’re all kinds of messed up inside!”
Li Cheng: Damn it! That’s cheating!
A-Keng: Damn right it is!
Zhou Ci’s expression darkened instantly. The cold fury in his face was almost tangible—like a black storm ready to strike.
One look from him could make blood freeze.
Li Cheng thought if there were ever a “Most Embarrassing Death on Earth” list, this moment would rank at least in the top five.
He fumbled nervously, hastily signing again, his face full of forced innocence: “That’s not what I meant. The translator glitched!”
The hologram translated faithfully once more.
“Oh?” Zhou Ci’s lips curved faintly. He leaned forward until their eyes met. “Then what did you mean?”
Li Cheng clutched his shirt, bit his lip, and changed the subject through signs: “I don’t want to marry you.”
“Hmph.” Zhou Ci braced one arm against the back of the sofa, leaning in close until their faces were mere inches apart.
His scent hit Li Cheng like a shock—
It was familiar.
And he liked it.
“You’ve already been bought by me,” Zhou Ci said flatly, as if reminding him of his place.
Li Cheng’s shoulders trembled slightly.
The man’s gaze carried a godlike disdain, a cold contempt that cut straight through him.
“Or would you rather go back to that miserable life—pouring tea, fetching water, being harassed by others, preyed on by demons?”
That scent pressed closer, heavier.
Li Cheng’s eyes drifted to Zhou Ci’s neck.
And in that instant, he froze.
There, on the side of Zhou Ci’s neck—
Was a faint mark of the Heart-Sealing Bond.
The very spot Li Cheng had bitten before—
Only Yan Jin had ever borne that mark.
The soft red imprint glowed faintly under the light, vibrant and alive—the symbol of a master bound through the Heart-Sealing Technique.
He’s… Yan Jin…
Li Cheng’s foxlike eyes met Zhou Ci’s cold, fathomless gaze.
And within them flickered a burst of starlight and heat.
