- Chapter 99 - The Black Dragon’s True Face
Li Cheng’s hand reached out, resting lightly against Zhu Ci’s chest as he drew a pink stroke across his skin. His voice came out small, trembling slightly. “I’m afraid of him.”
Zhu Ci caught Li Cheng’s wandering hand and looked him directly in the eyes. “Why are you afraid of him?”
Li Cheng didn’t answer. Instead, he abruptly changed the subject. “If I said I wasn’t a demon, would you believe me?”
He looked up at Zhu Ci with quiet anticipation.
“I believe you,” Zhu Ci replied without a hint of hesitation. “If you said it, I’d believe anything.”
Li Cheng’s eyes flickered slightly. After a pause, he parted his lips and confessed softly, “I’m not just a spirit fox. I’m a nine-tailed fox. My true form’s incomplete right now, that’s all.”
Zhu Ci smiled. “Then my Little Fox’s true form must be beautiful.”
“Of course.”
Li Cheng straightened a bit, his pride momentarily returning before continuing, “And Little Black Dragon—he’s not little at all. He’s a black-winged dragon with thunder seals carved into his claws. His form is massive, covering the sky, and wherever he passes, auspicious omens follow.”
After saying this, he glanced up at Zhu Ci, expecting to see shock or awe. Yet Zhu Ci’s expression didn’t even ripple.
Li Cheng frowned. “Hey, that’s a dragon we’re talking about! Aren’t you surprised? There aren’t any dragons in the Realm of Illusions—they’re divine beasts, born, not made! And he’s a winged dragon, no less!”
Zhu Ci chuckled, his reaction a beat too slow. “Ah, so my Little Fox has seen a dragon before. How impressive.”
His hand slid down, kneading the bare curve of Li Cheng’s waist. “Then why are you afraid of him?”
“Because he’s mean.” Li Cheng’s voice was tight, practically grinding the words through his teeth.
At that moment, the actual black dragon in question—Zhu Ci himself—fell silent.
“…?”
“How was he mean to you?” Zhu Ci searched his memory and was increasingly convinced that the Little Fox had gotten things very wrong.
Li Cheng glared. “He said he wanted to pluck all my fox fur and make hairpins out of it!”
“And he pushed me into a formation full of evil spirits.” As he said this, a shiver visibly ran down Li Cheng’s body, as though recalling something he’d rather forget.
“He just stood there and watched me get struck by lightning! It’s his fault I—”
Zhu Ci’s brows furrowed deeper and deeper the longer he listened. So it was all a misunderstanding after all. His lips parted slightly. “Then he truly deserves to die. Does my Little Fox know where he is? I’ll rip out his dragon sinew and make a whip for you to play with. Would that make you feel better?”
Li Cheng blinked at him, then gave a light thump to Zhu Ci’s solid chest. “It’s broad daylight—what are you dreaming about?”
Rip out his own dragon sinew? Not even he would dare dream that big.
Zhu Ci, however, was completely serious. “He bullied you. Of course I have to make it up to you.”
He reached out and ruffled Li Cheng’s hair, voice turning gentle. “So my Little Fox doesn’t actually hate him, right? You’re just afraid of him?”
That… would complicate things.
“You and this Little Black Dragon—are you two friends?” Zhu Ci pressed when Li Cheng didn’t answer.
Li Cheng paused, then answered slowly, “Not friends. To be precise… he was my pet.”
Even as the words left his mouth, they sounded absurd to his own ears. He waved a hand dismissively. “Well, not exactly. I raised him like a little lizard that hadn’t gained spiritual intelligence yet. When I met him, he was tiny.”
Li Cheng spread out his hand, palm up. “About this small. Curled right here, in my hand.”
“I think his wings got broken during his ascension trial, so he shrank. Curled up like that, how was I supposed to tell whether he was divine or demonic?”
Li Cheng’s eyes narrowed slightly. “So yeah, he’s probably taking revenge for all the times I bullied him before.”
“Oh?” Zhu Ci’s lips curved, a hint of laughter tugging at his mouth. “And how did you bully him?”
Li Cheng’s ears twitched proudly. “Even though he was small, he could breathe fire! I made him stay far away and use it to warm my feet.”
“He could summon water too, so I brought him along to help humans repair their city moats. I made a fortune off that, actually.”
“I even used him as a whip—beat half the Three Realms into submission.”
He paused for effect, then added with an exasperated hiss, “And once he grew up, he started making trouble for me every single day—and he really did pluck my fox fur!”
His voice grew more and more indignant as he spoke.
Zhu Ci, listening quietly beside him, suddenly couldn’t help laughing. Li Cheng’s ears twitched at the sound, thinking he was being mocked—only for Zhu Ci to say between chuckles, “My Little Fox is amazing. You really know how to make the most of your resources.”
Li Cheng scowled. “I’m telling you all this so you understand—I’m really afraid of him now.” His tone was utterly serious.
Zhu Ci drew him in, pressing Li Cheng against his chest before lowering his head to plant a soft kiss on his forehead. “Don’t be afraid of him.”
“He’s mean,” Li Cheng muttered in confusion, not understanding why Zhu Ci would say that.
“He’s not mean,” came the cool reply.
The voice was colder now—familiar, but not Zhu Ci’s.
Li Cheng froze. Something felt… wrong.
He shifted his hand—and realized that instead of holding Zhu Ci’s hand, he was gripping a long strand of hair.
It was black as ink, cascading like a waterfall, winding between his fingers like clouds of dark mist.
Li Cheng: “…???”
(t/n: The black hair imagery traditionally symbolizes transformation or revelation in Chinese literature, often hinting that the person before the protagonist is revealing their true identity.)
