- Chapter 11 - The Police Cat (11)
Chapter 11:
Shen Qiu’s ears twitched several times before confirming he hadn’t misheard.
With a loud “meow,” he spun in place and rubbed himself affectionately against the chief’s leg in a little cat snuggle.
Qin Yan reacted with surprise. “You mean we’re just taking Qiuqiu, one cat?”
“You handle the arrangements however you like. As long as there are no mistakes on this mission, I’ll file a report to the higher-ups immediately.”
Qin Yan stood at attention and saluted the chief.
“Yes, sir!”
The team assembled and prepared to set off. Along with Qiuqiu, they also brought a hunting dog.
It was a female Border Collie named Guoguo.
When the dog trainer led her over, she eagerly approached Shen Qiu, trying to sniff his bottom.
Shen Qiu politely declined, quickly dragging his large fluffy tail along the ground to block Guoguo from going any further.
The team was ready for their mission, and Qin Yan personally led Shen Qiu into the police car using his leash.
Inside the vehicle, Qin Yan kept reminding Shen Qiu what to do and what not to do, akin to a nervous father sending his child off to school for the first time.
He wrapped it all up with one final line: “If you’re not sure what to do, just follow Guoguo’s lead, understand?”
Guoguo sat across from him, wagging her tail and humming playfully.
“If you don’t know something, you can always ask big sis, okay little kitty~?”
Her voice trailed off with a lilt like a winding mountain road. Shen Qiu shivered, turned his head away, and decided to pretend he hadn’t heard anything.
The vehicle’s sirens wailed as they drove towards the city center.
Upon arriving at their destination, the heavily armed officers disembarked one after another. Qin Yan led Shen Qiu and Guoguo in two different directions. One group went around to the back entrance while the other was taken directly to the elevator.
The KTV was on the third floor of the building. Since it was still daytime, there shouldn’t be anyone around.
But when the elevator doors opened, the KTV’s lobby was lit up with colorful lights. A few people were walking back and forth. Once they heard the elevator, someone stepped forward to greet the guests.
The moment they saw the police, their expressions changed.
Lao San and the others burst in from the rear, weapons aimed at the people inside.
“Don’t move! Hands on your head and crouch down!”
Shen Qiu began sniffing the air for scents the moment he entered.
Qin Yan tugged lightly on his leash and gave the command, “Qiuqiu, sniff!”
Qiuqiu walked gracefully along the wall, nose twitching. His tail thumped against the ground repeatedly, showing his rising anxiety.
Something was off about the smell inside this KTV. It had been noticeable since they first entered, and definitely didn’t belong to a normal entertainment venue.
The police quickly secured the entire KTV. Although it was daytime, there were still quite a few people singing and sleeping inside.
Several scantily clad women squatted nervously among the crowd.
The smell was getting stronger.
Shen Qiu took the initiative to walk over, carefully sniffing the people squatting on the floor.
A cat suddenly approached the group. Since he was wearing a shoulder strap labeled “Police Cat,” he immediately drew everyone’s attention.
Shen Qiu noticed that the previously nervous expressions on the men and women visibly relaxed the moment they saw the cat.
He squinted his eyes, walked around the group, then lay down to look straight at Qin Yan.
“Meow!”
That was the signal he’d been trained to give upon detecting drugs. He had practiced it over a hundred times at the station.
Qin Yan’s expression changed immediately.
“Da Zhuang! Take them back for urine tests!”
As soon as those few people heard this, their faces changed dramatically. One even tried to bolt, only to be tackled by Da Zhuang and presented with a pair of handcuffs. 1
After the group was taken away, the rest of the people trembled with fear and were too scared to move a muscle.
Shen Qiu gave the area another sniff, and once he was sure there was no more trace of drugs, he was led into the private rooms.
One room after another came up clean. Aside from the mess of used condoms that smelled of cigarette smoke and alcohol. The mixed smells were enough to make someone nauseous. 2
Qin Yan was a bit worried that the overwhelming stench might impair Shen Qiu’s sense of smell.
“Qiuqiu, are you okay?”
Shen Qiu gently patted his calf with his tail in reassurance, then headed toward the final private room.
Guoguo was brought back as well to double-check every room Shen Qiu had already searched to ensure nothing had been overlooked.
The moment they entered the last room, a strange smell filled Shen Qiu’s nose, and he immediately knew this was the spot where they’d been using drugs.
He sniffed around the seams of the sofa and found drug paraphernalia beneath it, along with some leftover white powder.
Qin Yan smiled and praised him, “Good kitty.”
Shen Qiu shook his head and meowed while lying on the ground.
There’s more in this room! Let me go and I’ll find it myself!
Qin Yan seemed to understand the meowing perfectly. He unclipped the leash and let Shen Qiu search freely.
As mentioned before, a cat’s sense of smell is much more sensitive than a dog’s.
He went on to find several opened packets of white powder tucked into the folds of the torn curtains and in the tracks of the window.
Finally, he turned toward the bathroom and checked the trash can, the tile grout, and even the overfilled soap dispensers.
There was nothing there. But the smell still lingered in the bathroom.
He twitched his nose and turned his gaze to the sink.
Lightly leaping onto the counter, he used his paw to turn on the faucet, stared into the drain for a while, then turned the water off and hopped underneath the sink. He scratched at the drainage pipe and meowed loudly at Qin Yan.
Here! Right here! I guarantee there’s something inside this pipe!
Qin Yan raised an eyebrow in surprise and pulled out the pipe to take a look. Sure enough, a transparent plastic bag was tied with a rubber band at the top of the pipe. Inside, there was the unmistakable white powder.
However, because it hadn’t been sealed properly, the contents were soaked with water.
Lao San entered with Guoguo in tow.
“Captain, how is it going? Found it yet?”
Qin Yan shook the bag in his hand.
“Our little kitty here was definitely born to be a police cat.
“Take Guoguo and sweep the place again. Have the bureau send a team to bring the rest of the people in.”
“Also, have Yang Yue check who owns this KTV. Bring them in for questioning.”
Qin Yan scoffed, “Drugs and prostitution? There’s no way the owner wasn’t aware.”
Just as he finished speaking, a loud commotion broke out outside.
Someone shouted, “There’s someone under the cash register. They’re running for the back exit!”
At that, Shen Qiu’s tail shot up like an antenna.
“Meow!” He bolted for the door.
“Qiuqiu!”
Qin Yan didn’t even have enough time to call out.
He dashed like lightning, drifting to turn around the corner.
There were footsteps behind him. He glanced back and saw Guoguo running closely behind.
With four legs, Guoguo ran faster than Qin Yan who only had two legs, leaving the police behind in their dust.
Shen Qiu leapt and kicked the frantically fleeing man squarely in the back.
The man stumbled, hit the floor with a loud ‘thud’, and landed in an embarrassing position.
After struggling for a moment, he still tried to get up.
Shen Qiu pounced and firmly sat on his back.
The twenty-something-pound Maine Coon cat wasn’t just for show.
The man let out a grunt, rolled his eyes, and nearly passed out from being squashed.
Guoguo also charged in quickly, stared at Shen Qiu for a moment, then copied him and sat directly on the man’s butt.
By the time Qin Yan and the others arrived, the man was already struggling to breathe under the combined weight of the cat and dog, which totaled around fifty to sixty catties.
Upon seeing Qin Yan, tears welled in the man’s eyes.
“Officer, please… get them off me… I’m about to be crushed to death here!”
Qin Yan: ……
“Pfft!”
Someone burst out laughing.

1. [直接赠送一套玫瑰金手镯 (zhíjiē zèngsòng yítào méiguī jīnshǒuzhuó). This translates to a set of rose gold bracelets? I’m assuming this is slang or an idiom, but I wasn’t able to find it on Baidu, so I can only guess they mean handcuffs.]↩
2. [除了一堆用过的byt (chúle yìduī yòngguò de byt) This chapter is very slang-heavy. Apparently, byt is slang for condom? I wasn’t able to find a lot of mentions of this online.]↩
I just realized that the cat is 20 catties, not 20 pounds. I just autotranslated it to pounds since that’s the measurement I normally use. This is another thing I need to edit….
Btw, I have a Ko-Fi page! If you want to support me, I would really appreciate it! For every $10 donated, I’ll post an extra chapter as a thank you! <3
