“Understood, you may leave for now.”
After Assistant Zhang left, Qi Huaizhi’s gaze returned to the documents. The clauses that had been so easy to handle moments ago now seemed impossible to focus on.
Meanwhile, Su Yu had already downed several cups of tea and made multiple trips to the bathroom.
Time ticked by, second by second.
There was no sound from outside. Aside from Assistant Zhang, who had brought her in, and a woman who occasionally came in to refill her tea, no one else appeared.
It felt as if she had been forgotten.
Su Yu’s stomach growled twice.
It was already noon. She had barely eaten breakfast this morning, and after sitting here doing nothing for so long, she was starving.
The woman came in again to refill her tea, and Su Yu could no longer hold back her frustration. She asked, “When exactly is Qi Huaizhi coming?”
“I… I don’t know,” the woman replied.
She was just a receptionist and had no idea.
Looking at the tea she had nearly gotten sick of drinking, Su Yu felt even hungrier.
Taking a deep breath, she could no longer endure it: “Fine, I’ll go find him myself. I want to see what kind of meeting could last this long.”
Leaving the meeting room, with her excellent eyesight, she immediately spotted a door labeled “Conference Room.” She walked straight over, her aura commanding.
The secretary stationed there panicked at the sight.
“I’m sorry, but there’s a meeting in progress. You can’t go in—”
Su Yu didn’t listen: “I’m here to find someone. Please move aside.”
The secretary hurriedly blocked her way. “No, the meeting is ongoing right now. Please wait a bit longer—”
Taking a deep breath, Su Yu stopped reasoning and simply barged in.
Wait, wait, how many “a bit longers” had she already endured?
The Qi Huaizhi she knew would never have treated her like this.
“Miss, miss, please cooperate with me…” The secretary tried desperately to stop her, but Su Yu found an opening, dodged past her, and grabbed the door handle. All she had to do was press down, and she’d be able to see inside.
The secretary turned pale.
With a sharp click, the door to the conference room was flung open.
The scene inside made Su Yu freeze in place as if she had been nailed to the spot.
Inside the conference room, the intense discussions gradually quieted down as everyone turned to look at the intruder. At the head of the room, the man with a calm and indifferent expression slowly lifted his gaze.
Two pairs of eyes met in mid-air.
One cold and laced with faint impatience and irritation, the other bewildered and somewhat lost.
Seeing that it was Su Yu, Qi Huaizhi paused for a moment, then his gaze grew even colder, tinged with a hint of mockery.
“What is going on?” He asked the secretary at the door.
The young woman was so terrified that her face turned white, and she bowed repeatedly. “I’m so sorry, Mr. Qi. This is all my fault. I couldn’t stop her.”
Faced with the stares of everyone in the room, Su Yu’s arm, which had been resting on the door handle, stiffened before she slowly withdrew it, hiding it behind her back.
An air of awkwardness filled the room.
Qi Huaizhi really was in a meeting.
Su Yu blinked awkwardly, and at that moment, her stomach growled loudly. Her mind blanked, and she looked at the man across from her, her voice soft and tender.
“Qi Huaizhi, I’m hungry.”
It sounded like she was pouting, or perhaps feeling wronged.
In an instant, the conference room fell into dead silence.
The gazes quickly shifted away from Su Yu. No one dared to openly observe Qi Huaizhi, but it didn’t stop them from sneaking glances at him.
No one can stop the nature of eating melons [1].
The corners of Qi Huaizhi’s lips curled into a mocking smile. What was Su Yu doing? Did she think he would still feel sorry for her, like before?
Ten minutes later.
The meeting was paused, and Su Yu was sitting in Qi Huaizhi’s office, eating the lunch Assistant Zhang had brought back. The food was delicious, comparable to that of a five-star restaurant.
As she ate, Su Yu kept stealing glances at Qi Huaizhi.
He hadn’t changed much—just that his aura had grown more imposing. When he looked at people, there was an unconscious sense of superiority, a stark contrast to the clean, innocent boy he had once been.
【No wonder he’s the male lead. He looks good from every angle, flawless from 360 degrees.】
Su Yu gazed at him as if admiring her own cub, full of appreciation.
【To think he’s become this successful in just five years. If the Su Yu from five years ago had met the Qi Huaizhi of today, there’s no way she would have broken up with him.】
Sensing Su Yu’s gaze, Qi Huaizhi pursed his lips in annoyance. His voice was cold. “Once you’re done eating, leave. Don’t come back. Huaiyu doesn’t welcome you.”
Suddenly, the food didn’t taste as good anymore.
Thinking of her family’s troubles and her parents’ strained yet comforting expressions, Su Yu lowered her head, squeezing out a few tears.
“Huaizhi…”
Qi Huaizhi interrupted coldly: “Shut up. Don’t call me that. Given our relationship, it only makes me feel disgusted.”
Su Yu’s face paled, but she forced a smile.
Ignoring her still-hungry stomach, she walked over to Qi Huaizhi, her eyes glistening with tears. “Mr. Qi, I know I was wrong before, but my family is innocent. Please, I’m begging you, can you let them go?”
Her plea sounded laughable.
Qi Huaizhi leaned back lazily in his chair, separated from her by the wide desk, and met her gaze.
“What do you mean, Miss Su? What does your family’s situation have to do with me? What does ‘letting them go’ even mean?”
“And besides, you don’t get to decide who’s innocent. I do.”
Su Yu’s tears fell in a sudden rush.
But she didn’t bother to wipe them away and instead hurriedly apologized: “I misspoke. The Su family’s situation has nothing to do with you. I’m begging you, for the sake of what we once had, could you help me this once? Please ask for mercy on behalf of the Su family.”
Her voice was still as soft as it had always been, tinged with a cry that made her seem even more pitiful, like a scene from a misty, rainy alley in the south of the Yangtze River.
It felt as though their roles had reversed.
In the past, it was Qi Huaizhi who had begged Su Yu not to break up with him, pleaded with her to return his calls. Now, it was Su Yu begging him for help.
“Help you?” Qi Huaizhi let out a faint laugh. “Alright.”
Su Yu’s eyes brightened.
“Kneel and beg me, and I’ll help you. How about that?” Qi Huaizhi’s tone was casual.
Su Yu froze, disbelief washing over her as she looked at him, her face draining of color.
Her voice trembled: “Huaizhi…”
Through Su Yu, Qi Huaizhi seemed to see the broken, humiliated version of himself from the past. See, Su Yu, I told you that you’d regret it.
He stared at her silently, his gaze indifferent.
The office was so quiet that you could hear a pin drop, with only Su Yu’s shallow, trembling breaths breaking the silence.
She bit her lower lip, turning it pale.
After a long pause, she heard herself ask: “Are you… really serious?”
Qi Huaizhi smirked coldly. “Do you have any other choice?”
Su Yu’s body trembled. “I…”
Lowering her head, she said nothing. It was as if she were silently refusing, yet at the same time, trying to convince herself.
Qi Huaizhi waited patiently. He didn’t think Su Yu would go that far for the Su family. She had no heart, only thought about herself, selfish and heartless.
If there was anything in this world that could move her, it was probably only money.
But then—
Su Yu actually began to lower herself to the ground.
Qi Huaizhi’s expression shifted, and he abruptly stood up. The heavy, ergonomically designed office chair slid back, hitting the cabinet with a loud thud.
“That’s enough!”
Su Yu flinched, her movements halting.
Taking a deep breath, Qi Huaizhi said: “That’s enough. You can go. I’ll think about it.”
He only said he would consider it, not that he would agree.
But even that exceeded Su Yu’s expectations.
She broke into a smile through her tears and bowed. “Thank you, Mr. Qi!”
In some ways, Su Yu could be considered adaptable, able to endure and persist—just like when she had pursued him all those years ago, pretending to be so patient and pitiful.
Thinking back, it must have really been a struggle for her.
Qi Huaizhi sneered at himself, disgusted that he had once again fallen for this woman’s tears and feigned weakness.
Su Yu cautiously asked: “Can I come back tomorrow?”
Qi Huaizhi replied coldly: “Suit yourself.”
