- Chapter 11 - Dinner with the Parents Turns into a Rival Showdown
Ruan Tang grew even more nervous.
Although the original host had known Uncle Shen and Aunt Shen, she herself had never met them.
She was a little shy around strangers.
Seeing Ruan Tang’s cheeks flush and her lower lip clamped between her teeth, Shen Zhu’s heart melted into a pool of spring water.
He couldn’t help reaching out and pinching her soft porcelain cheek.
“Tangtang, what are you afraid of? We’re already this close.”
“I—I’m not scared… Don’t pinch my face.”
Ruan Tang’s quiet protest had no real bite to it.
Shen Zhu only wanted to tease her more. Absentmindedly, his fingertips brushed against her soft, inviting lips.
His heart skipped a beat.
That softness—like cotton candy. What if it wasn’t his fingers touching her, but his lips…
The thought made his handsome face flush with heat. He quickly pulled his hand back and coughed lightly into his fist.
“Sorry. Let’s go.”
Shen Zhu had made a reservation at a high-end Western restaurant. Knowing Ruan Tang didn’t like crowds, he had booked out the entire place.
His parents were warm and kind, treating Ruan Tang as if she were their own daughter.
At first, Ruan Tang was a little stiff, but she quickly relaxed, chatting softly and sweetly with Uncle Shen and Aunt Shen. Shen Zhu sat to the side, quietly watching the scene unfold.
His gaze was full of infatuation.
Aunt Shen noticed and gave her husband a gentle nudge under the table, shooting him a meaningful look.
Uncle Shen cleared his throat.
“Tangtang, what do you think of our Zhu?”
Without even thinking, Ruan Tang replied,
“Gege is really nice.”
Aunt Shen jumped in right away.
“Then would you like to be our daughter-in-law?”
Ruan Tang was mid-sip when she heard that. She choked on her water and coughed nonstop, eyes misting with tears.
Shen Zhu immediately reached over to rub her back and handed her more water.
“Are you okay, Tangtang? Don’t rush. Take a sip first.”
As he spoke, he shot his parents a scolding glare.
I told you to be subtle—now look, you’ve scared my Tangtang.
The Shen couple exchanged a glance, both seeing the same exasperation in each other’s eyes.
Wasn’t it Shen Zhu who asked them to test the waters? And now he’s blaming them for doing exactly that?
Forget it. Not their problem anymore.
Serves him right if he can’t win the girl.
Uncle Shen gave a gentle smile.
“Don’t be scared, Tangtang. We’re just suggesting it—it’s not like we’re trying to force you.”
Aunt Shen picked up the thread.
“Honestly, I think you’re still young. You’ve just started college, and there must be a lot of excellent boys around you. Take your time and see what’s out there.”
This time it was Shen Zhu who nearly choked.
What the hell? Whose side are they even on?
He threw his parents frantic looks, but the two old troublemakers seemed dead set on going against him.
“If you haven’t found anyone you like yet, Auntie can help introduce you to some boys. What kind of guy do you like?”
Uncle Shen rubbed his chin thoughtfully and said with mock mystery,
“You definitely wouldn’t like someone like our Zhu—too scared to confess his feelings, always making his parents speak for him, right?”
Shen Zhu: …Are you sure I’m your son? Do normal parents throw their own kid under the bus like this??
Ruan Tang’s face turned red.
“Ah-Zhu gege is great, it’s just that I—I—”
“She already has someone she likes.”
A clear and pleasant voice cut in from the side.
The next moment, a long arm gently draped around Ruan Tang’s shoulders, pulling her close.
“Sorry to interrupt. I have something I need to say to my girlfriend. Mind if I borrow her for a moment?”
Ruan Tang stared at the man now holding her.
“Lu Jie?”
The Shen couple looked equally stunned by the sudden arrival of this young man.
In terms of looks and aura, he was on par with their own son.
Well now… here comes the love rival.
Both of them instinctively wore expressions of gleeful spectators.
When Shen Zhu saw Lu Jie’s arm wrapped around Ruan Tang, his expression darkened instantly. He swatted the hand away.
“Since when are you Tangtang’s boyfriend?”
Lu Jie calmly squeezed Ruan Tang’s palm and leaned in to whisper at her ear.
“Be good. You don’t want them setting you up with random guys, right? Let me help you out. You can count on me.”
His breath ghosted over her sensitive ear as he spoke, making her lashes flutter.
If Aunt Shen really insisted on setting her up, it would be a disaster.
And since Lu Jie was offering…
Her cheeks flushed as she lowered her gaze and tugged gently at Lu Jie’s sleeve.
“I—we just got together… I’m sorry.”
She wasn’t good at lying, and her eyes darted guiltily.
Even knowing it wasn’t real, Lu Jie still felt his heart lurch.
If only it were true.
Just for this moment, he let himself pretend it was.
He clasped Ruan Tang’s small hand, gripped it tightly, and pulled her out of the restaurant without looking back.
Shen Zhu’s face was frighteningly dark.
“Dad, Mom—you eat without me.”
He stood and rushed out after them.
“Ah, young love.”
Aunt Shen chuckled behind her hand.
Uncle Shen draped an arm around his wife’s shoulders and smiled kindly.
“Let’s see if our brat can catch up to her.”
“Doesn’t look too promising.”
Lu Jie led Ruan Tang straight to his sports car.
He had been tailing her from the school gates.
Fortunately, the restaurant Shen Zhu picked happened to be owned by the Lu family—otherwise he wouldn’t have made it inside.
“Lu—Lu Jie—”
Ruan Tang had barely settled into her seat when Lu Jie leaned over and buckled her in.
He was so close he practically enveloped the delicate girl in his arms, mischief flickering in his eyes as he exhaled gently by her ear.
“Hold on tight. I’m about to drive.”
The warmth of his breath made her earlobes burn, and a soft blush bloomed across her cheeks.
The car sped off, eventually stopping in a scenic, quiet place on the outskirts of town.
He hit the brakes and glanced in the rearview mirror.
“Tsk. That guy’s really like a ghost—won’t let up.”
As soon as they stopped, Shen Zhu arrived and jumped out of his car, yanking open Lu Jie’s door and grabbing him by the collar.
“You bastard. Why’d you bring Ruan Tang to some remote place like this?”
Lu Jie didn’t even flinch.
“Why do you care? Who are you to her, exactly? You sure like to stick your nose where it doesn’t belong.”
Shen Zhu was nearly shaking with rage.
“You—”
Lu Jie narrowed his eyes.
“Keep your voice down. Tangtang’s asleep.”
Shen Zhu paused and looked over at the passenger seat.
The soft little girl was slumped against the seat, head nodding gently in slumber.
Her sleeping face was peaceful and adorable, the tip of her tiny nose tinged pink, lips softly pouting like a piece of ripe fruit—impossible not to want a taste.
Lu Jie chuckled quietly.
“Only Tangtang could sleep so soundly in my passenger seat. Not only is she cute, she’s brave too.”
He was a professional race car driver, after all.
Just now, to shake Shen Zhu off his tail, he had floored the accelerator.
Who would’ve thought this little thing not only didn’t get scared—she actually fell asleep.
Was this… total trust in his driving skills?
Lu Jie found himself even more enchanted by Ruan Tang.
Shen Zhu opened the door, grabbed Lu Jie by the collar, and dragged him out of the car.
Once they were far enough not to disturb Ruan Tang, he shoved Lu Jie away and said coldly,
“Spill it. What exactly is going on between you and Tangtang?”
