- Chapter 4 - Jealousy and Drunken Confessions in the Elevator
Damn it! Sweetheart? Said she liked him?
It was all a lie!
Qi Feng furiously crushed the candy wrapper he’d been treasuring and threw it across the room.
It felt like a giant hand had gripped his heart, squeezing until pain and jealousy flooded through him.
—Campus heartthrob? Zhou Yi?
Where the hell did that bastard come from? He dares to fight me for her?
—
That night.
Lu Jie, lost in thoughts of Ruan Tang, got drunk for the first time in his life.
He stumbled out of the cab, swaying as he made his way toward his high-rise apartment.
He stepped into the elevator and hit the button for the 17th floor. Slumped against the elevator wall, he rubbed his throbbing temple.
He couldn’t stop thinking about her face.
He had never seen a girl that adorable.
Her charm wasn’t fake—it was innate, effortless, and completely unselfconscious.
But she hadn’t even looked at him once.
From start to finish, Ruan Tang’s eyes had only followed Zhou Yi. Not a single glance had come his way.
“Damn it. What’s so great about that cold-faced bastard?”
“Young Master Lu is way gentler than him…”
Mumbling in a drunken haze, Lu Jie slid down the wall and sat on the elevator floor, burying his head between his knees.
“Why won’t you look at me…”
Ding—
The elevator arrived at the 17th floor. The doors opened.
A startled little gasp rang out.
Lu Jie froze, raising his head. The moment he saw the girl standing outside the elevator, his eyes lit up.
She was petite, dressed in a ruffled off-the-shoulder dress, her skin practically glowing white.
Her wide, dewy eyes shimmered like those of a frightened little deer, staring in alarm at the man collapsed inside the elevator.
The sharp scent of expensive cologne mixed with the heavy stink of alcohol.
“Xiao Ruan Tang…”
Lu Jie gave a dazed smile.
Maybe getting drunk wasn’t so bad after all—he could hallucinate this clearly.
The girl he longed for… was finally looking at him.
It felt amazing.
“A-Are you okay? Are you feeling unwell?”
Though Ruan Tang had been startled at first and was a little afraid, on closer look, the man didn’t seem like a bad person.
She stepped into the elevator, crouching slightly as she looked him over with concern.
“Do you need me to call an ambulance?”
Lu Jie caught a whiff of the sweet scent clinging to her. His throat bobbed slightly.
Then, without warning, his strong, well-defined arm clamped around the back of her neck, pulling her into his embrace.
Ruan Tang tumbled into the man’s broad, muscular chest, immediately engulfed in his aggressive presence.
Panic surged.
“Y-You—let me go…”
“No.”
Lu Jie locked her tightly in his arms, large hands rubbing along the delicate curve of her neck with suggestive familiarity.
Ruan Tang’s cheeks flushed scarlet. Even her voice trembled.
“You… you pervert!”
Instead of being offended, Lu Jie only laughed harder.
“Say it again. I like it.”
“Freak!”
Her eyes filled with tears, the helplessness in her expression only making her more heartbreakingly easy to bully.
Lu Jie’s eyes darkened.
His hand drifted up from the nape of her neck to her soft, delicate earlobe.
“That’s all it takes to scare you? But I haven’t even done anything yet.”
His voice was low and magnetic, husky with drunken boldness. As he leaned in, his thin lips barely brushed against her ear.
“Want me to show you what a real pervert is, hmm?”
Ruan Tang trembled.
And then—
Ding.
The elevator had descended back to the first floor. The doors slid open again.
Standing outside was a tall young man in a beige trench coat.
He wore gold-rimmed glasses, his features refined and elegant, exuding a cold, restrained aura.
But in that moment, his expression was terrifyingly dark. His eyes were locked on the scene inside the elevator, fists clenched tightly at his sides.
“Tangtang? What are you two doing?”
—
Half an hour earlier.
Ruan Tang had gotten a call from her childhood friend, the boy next door she’d grown up with.
He said he’d just landed a job in T City and had moved into a place near her apartment.
He wanted to take her out for dinner that evening.
Ruan Tang had hurried to tidy up her apartment and headed downstairs to meet him.
She hadn’t expected to run into a drunk in the elevator.
She got harassed.
And worst of all, her childhood friend had caught the whole thing.
It was mortifying!
Her face was blazing red as she struggled to wriggle free from Lu Jie’s grasp.
But when Lu Jie felt her resistance, his expression darkened, and he only held her tighter.
“Who’s he? Why’d he call you so sweetly? I haven’t even called you Tangtang yet…”
Ruan Tang, furious and close to tears, snapped, “I should be the one asking who you are! I don’t even know you!”
Outside the elevator, Shen Zhu finally understood what was happening. His gaze turned razor sharp.
His long, elegant fingers reached out to stop the elevator doors from closing, then he extended one arm and yanked Ruan Tang firmly into his embrace, holding her securely around the waist.
“Don’t be scared, Tangtang. I’m here.”
After calming her down, Shen Zhu pulled out his phone from his coat pocket and dialed the police.
“Building XX, first floor elevator. There’s a pervert harassing a girl. Please send someone immediately.”
After hanging up, he softened his voice and looked down at the trembling girl in his arms.
“Are you okay, Tangtang? Did he touch you?”
Ruan Tang’s cheeks turned a deeper pink. Her moist peach blossom eyes lifted toward the young man.
Up close, he looked even more refined. The gold-rimmed glasses gave him a scholarly, abstinent air, while his fox-like eyes hinted at an underlying sensuality.
“I’m okay… thank you.”
Seeing her shy, flustered face made Shen Zhu’s heart skip a beat for no reason at all.
He realized he was holding her a little too tightly. He should let go. And yet, the feel of her in his arms made it impossible to do so.
All these years, he’d treated caring for Ruan Tang as a responsibility. To him, she had always been the sweet little girl next door.
But now, something was changing. The sense of duty had taken on a completely different flavor.
“What did you just call me?”
Ruan Tang lowered her long, curling lashes and softly said, “Gege.”
Shen Zhu’s heart skipped a beat.
Meanwhile, Lu Jie—who hadn’t even reacted when Shen Zhu called the police—completely lost it when he heard Ruan Tang say that one word.
Like a carp leaping from the water, Lu Jie sprang to his feet and charged toward Shen Zhu.
“You bastard! You think I’m just some corpse lying here?!”
