- Chapter 30 - Guess Who She'll Call “Brother”
Leng Li stormed in, wrapped in a wave of murderous intent.
With a single flick of her wrist, a dazzling burst of icy spiritual power exploded from her palm, instantly blasting back a swath of black-clad bodyguards.
Her frosty gaze locked onto Lu Chengzhou.
She bit out each word coldly:
“Let. Her. Go.”
Lu Chengzhou narrowed his eyes.
Just one night later, and her spiritual energy had already recovered nearly to full strength? Seems he’d underestimated the Leng family’s bloodline.
He hadn’t brought many strong fighters with him today—he’d just come to pick up Ruan Tang for a casual date. Physically, he was at a disadvantage.
And while he was a master strategist, brute force wasn’t his specialty.
For now, it would be smarter to retreat.
And yet…
“Let. Your. Mom. Go.”
All his years of shrewd business instincts were nothing compared to how obsessed he’d become with Ruan Tang.
The darker part of Lu Chengzhou’s nature reared its head, wiping every trace of warmth from his peach blossom eyes. His handsome features were cast into shadow.
“Just a pet mermaid, and you think she gets to tell her master who he can or can’t be with?”
Leng Li was instantly enraged.
A long, ice-blue spiritual sword materialized in her hand, gleaming like frozen starlight. Without hesitation, she slashed it viciously toward Lu Chengzhou.
At that very moment, Ruan Tang finally stirred awake.
She rubbed her sleepy eyes, and just as she opened them, she was met with the terrifying sight of a blade flashing toward her.
With a startled cry, she instinctively shrank deeper into the strong arms around her.
Leng Li froze mid-strike.
“Ruan Tang!”
Lu Chengzhou, of course, had noticed that she was about to wake up. He’d chosen this exact moment to provoke Leng Li on purpose.
Now, he calmly pulled her closer into his embrace and spoke with a soft, coaxing tone.
“It’s okay, Tangtang. Don’t be scared. I’m here—I’ll protect you.”
Then, as if it were an afterthought, he turned to mock Leng Li once more:
“Young Master Leng, if you’ve got a problem with me, we can settle it one-on-one anytime. But maybe try not to recklessly endanger your own master in the process? What if she’d gotten hurt?”
Leng Li was so furious her eyes turned red.
She knew her aim had been precise. She would never harm Ruan Tang.
But Ruan Tang didn’t know that. What if she really thought Leng Li didn’t care about her safety?
So she softened her tone and tried to explain:
“Ruan Tang, I didn’t mean to—”
Before she could finish, Ruan Tang wriggled free from Lu Chengzhou’s arms and bounced lightly to her feet, darting over like a butterfly to fling herself into Leng Li’s embrace.
Her delicate face turned up, glowing with mischief and sweetness as she grinned at her.
“That big meanie Lu Chengzhou bullied you again, didn’t he? Don’t worry—I’ll scold him for you!”
Then she whirled around and yelled at him, cheeks puffed with righteous fury:
“You big jerk! Always picking on mermaids! So what if you’re rich? Capitalism is evil! Ptooey! Ptooey!”
Lu Chengzhou: “…”
His heart hurt.
How was that bullying?!
Leng Li was the one who attacked him out of nowhere!
Besides, everyone knew that mermaids were pets to humans. That had been the law for centuries.
And the Leng siblings—these two mermaids—he’d paid a fortune to import from Europe.
Now he had neither the fish nor the fortune—and worst of all, he was getting publicly scolded by his own fiancée. Tragic. Truly tragic.
He was a veteran businessman, ruthless and cunning, and this might’ve been the first time he’d ever taken such a loss. And yet, there was no way to explain himself.
“Tangtang, I didn’t bully her.”
Ruan Tang shot him a suspicious look.
“Oh really? Then why did A-Li attack you? And what about A-Li’s arm—”
Right then, Leng Li let out a small, pained whimper.
Ruan Tang turned, eyes wide, and saw her holding her arm as if injured. She rushed over in a panic.
“A-Li! You’re hurt?!”
It was just a shallow scratch—one of the guards had grazed her when trying to grab her.
But Leng Li took full advantage, leaning heavily against Ruan Tang as she put on a weak and pitiful act.
Her voice, though sulky, was laced with smugness.
“Yeah, I got hurt by your fiancé. So… are you going to take responsibility?”
Ruan Tang’s heart ached. She gently helped Leng Li up and turned back to glare at Lu Chengzhou, her big, watery eyes full of fury.
“Still think you didn’t bully anyone?! She’s injured because of you!”
Lu Chengzhou stared at the barely-there scratch on Leng Li’s arm and was so angry he couldn’t speak.
He’s hit his elbow on a desk harder than that! What kind of injury was this?!
But Ruan Tang was in full protective mode. She didn’t even spare him another glance.
“Aw, poor thing, that must really hurt… Let me take you inside and clean it up.”
She carefully supported Leng Li and led her into the villa, brushing right past Lu Chengzhou.
As they passed, Lu Chengzhou and Leng Li locked eyes, both simmering with silent contempt.
Lu Chengzhou: Tch. Manipulative little witch.
Leng Li: Hmph. Filthy homewrecker.
After they disappeared inside, Lu Chengzhou sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose in frustration. Then he glanced sideways at Leng Hao and couldn’t help sneering.
“Your little sister is something else. Bet even you can’t handle her, huh?”
Leng Hao frowned slightly.
He had to admit—this was the first time he’d ever seen his sister act like this.
She’d always been like a mischievous child: playful, impulsive, and innocent. She never cared for schemes or manipulation.
But now?
This kind of sly behavior… was completely new.
What annoyed him more was how, the moment Ruan Tang saw Leng Li, her whole focus shifted.
She practically flew to her.
Leng Hao’s mood soured further.
When had those two gotten this close?
…
Later that day, Leng Hao returned to the villa looking for Ruan Tang.
But when he walked into her room, the only one there was his own little sister, lounging comfortably on the sofa with a bowl of grapes.
“Where’s Ruan Tang?”
Leng Li plucked a glistening cherry from the bowl, turning it between her fingers.
“She’s taking a bath.”
Only then did Leng Hao notice the faint sound of running water.
His eyes flicked—purely out of instinct—toward the frosted-glass bathroom door.
Behind the steamy haze, a vague silhouette emerged: delicate, graceful curves outlined in condensation.
Just one glance—and he immediately jerked his gaze away, ears flushing red.
Leng Li saw the whole thing, and her expression darkened.
She set the fruit bowl aside and spoke with rare seriousness.
“Brother, are you… close with my Tangtang?”
Leng Hao frowned slightly.
“Since when did she become your Tangtang?”
Leng Li gave a playful smile.
“Isn’t that what you were thinking? Or are you saying she’s yours?”
His expression turned cold. Pale gold eyes narrowed.
“She’s human. She’s not like us.”
Leng Li didn’t argue. She actually smiled in relief—though the smile didn’t reach her eyes.
“Good. I was starting to worry you’d try to steal her from me. But if that’s how you feel, then I’ve got nothing to worry about.”
Leng Hao stared at her.
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
She turned her attention back to the cherry in her hand. It was glossy and plump, like a piece of soft candy—tempting and luscious.
“I mean, one day, Tangtang will call me ‘big sister’… just like she calls you ‘big brother.’”
The air in the room dropped to freezing.
“Mermaids and humans can’t be together. And besides, you’re both—”
Leng Li cut him off, her tone light and mocking.
“Both girls?”
She tilted her head and smiled again—bold and defiant.
“Did you forget, brother? Mermaids… can choose their gender at will.”
t/n: In this story’s universe, mermaids (or merfolk) are sentient beings often treated as ornamental pets by humans. While many still appear feminine, this line references the lore that mermaids have biological or mystical control over their gender presentation, which plays a key role in the story.
