- Chapter 32 - "Freedom? Not a Chance."
The system, having long given up on mortal concerns, replied with the calm detachment of the enlightened:
【Give it up. Don’t even think about it—switching tracks mid-mission is basically suicide.】
【Then what am I supposed to do… Am I gonna lose more points again? Ugh…】
Ruan Tang was practically in tears. Why did her mission have to be this hard?
【Look on the bright side.】
The system, unbothered as ever, even tried to console her.
【You’re already at zero mission points. What’s the worst that could happen—go into the negatives? Just think of this as a free-play round. It’s not a big deal!】
Ruan Tang: … Ugh. Weak, pitiful, and helpless.
…
She sulked for quite a while before finally forcing herself to face reality.
But the moment she opened her bedroom door, even someone as dense as Ruan Tang could tell—
something was off.
The air… was tense.
Standing on either side of her door like celestial guardians were her two personal “gatekeepers.”
To the left: her “older brother,” silver hair cascading like a waterfall, tall and frosty, his profile elegant and refined—like a snow lotus blooming on a pristine mountain peak, untouched by worldly dust.
To the right: her “younger brother,” skin pale as porcelain, gaze arrogant yet stunning, those feline eyes glittering mischievously like a proud, untamable kitten.
But when they saw her—Ruan Tang—appear…
Even the coldest snow lotus melted into a spring breeze.
Even the haughtiest little feline bowed its head to beg for affection.
They spoke in perfect unison:
“Tangtang! Are you okay?”
Ruan Tang blinked. Wow. That timing. No doubt about it—they’re brothers.
Yet the brothers immediately turned to glare at one another like bitter enemies, as if an ancient feud had suddenly been revived.
Leng Li was the first to step forward, lowering his head apologetically.
“Sorry… I must’ve scared you. Merfolk can choose their gender, you know. I just wanted to surprise you, so I didn’t tell you ahead of time.”
Ruan Tang had no idea how to respond to that.
Surprise? More like a heart attack, thank you very much.
On the side, Leng Hao let out a scoffing snort, openly voicing her thoughts:
“Surprise? More like a jump scare.”
The two locked eyes again—sparks flying.
Ruan Tang silently took half a step back, afraid she’d become collateral damage in this escalating brotherly war.
Seriously, what are they on? Why are they suddenly acting like rival alphas?
“Tangtang, you don’t like me like this… do you?”
Leng Li reached out and gently clasped her hand, long lashes drooping as his cat-like eyes sparkled with a pleading light.
His voice, softened into a boyish coax, was part supplication, part spoiled flirt.
Ruan Tang’s cheeks flushed red on the spot.
The blush crept all the way to her ears as she quickly averted her eyes—utterly disarmed.
“O-of course I like it…” she mumbled. She had always had a weakness for beautiful people.
Leng Li instantly lit up with joy.
“See? I knew Tangtang wouldn’t dislike me. Right, big brother?”
Leng Hao stood stiff and cold, watching this exchange unfold with an ache blooming in his chest. The irritation rose in waves.
He stepped forward and forcibly pried them apart.
“Talk if you must. But what’s with all the touching?”
Leng Li glared at him, annoyed.
“We’ll talk however we like. Since when do you get to dictate who I touch?”
“You—!”
Leng Hao felt a sudden rush of fury. This younger brother of his—when had he become so defiant? His face darkened visibly.
But Leng Li wasn’t done. He smiled slyly and took Ruan Tang’s hand again.
“Tangtang, remember what you promised me?”
Ruan Tang tilted her head, puzzled. “Promised… what?”
“In the forest. You promised me something. About my brother.”
Leng Hao frowned. A vague sense of foreboding crept in.
Then Ruan Tang’s eyes lit up with realization. “Oh! Right!”
She skipped over to the cabinet, rummaged through a drawer, and proudly presented a wrinkled piece of paper to Leng Hao like it was treasure.
“Here! Your indenture contract! Giving it back to you!”
Leng Hao stared at her, momentarily stunned.
She shoved it into his hands, then rose on tiptoe and gave his shoulder a soft pat, smiling sweetly.
“Didn’t you want your freedom? Well, here you go. You’re free now! No need to thank me—you can leave!”
His expression turned stormy in an instant.
He stared down at the crumpled contract in his hands, then back at her guileless, beaming face—like a bucket of ice water had been dumped over his head.
“You want me to leave?”
Ruan Tang nodded cheerfully. As if worried he wouldn’t believe her, she even raised her delicate white hand to swear an oath.
“I promise! I really mean it—no tricks or traps. I know you don’t trust humans, so here it is: I, Ruan Tang, swear to grant Leng Hao his freedom and never cling to him again. If I break this oath, may the heavens strike me d—”
Before she could finish, Leng Hao had yanked her into his arms and kissed her—hard.
Leng Li’s face instantly dropped. He lunged to intervene.
But Leng Hao casually lifted a hand—and a translucent barrier snapped into place between them.
Leng Li’s spiritual power couldn’t match his older brother’s. He could only watch helplessly as the girl he liked was pinned and kissed—his expression darkening with rage.
“You bastard! Let her go! I swear I’ll kill you—!”
No matter how he shouted or cursed, the barrier kept his words from reaching them.
Leng Hao’s powerful hand gripped the girl’s slim waist, pressing her firmly against the barrier. His other hand cupped her face, making sure she couldn’t slip away.
And then that kiss deepened—hot, fast, and reckless—filled with frustration, jealousy, pain, and a possessive kind of love.
Ruan Tang was completely stunned.
She didn’t even know what had just happened. Her eyes stared blankly at his suddenly very close, very handsome face. The air around her thinned, and her mind turned hazy.
Those long, narrow golden eyes gazed into hers.
His deep, magnetic voice rumbled close.
“Be good. Close your eyes.”
Dizzied by the kiss, her brain had long since stopped working. She obeyed without thinking, gently shutting her eyes.
Leng Hao gazed at the soft, obedient girl in his arms—his heart melting.
He couldn’t help but deepen the kiss again.
Until her knees gave out. Until she was too weak to stand, slumped softly against his strong chest, gasping for breath.
“Still want me to leave?”
His eyes darkened as he stared at her now flushed, kiss-swollen lips.
Ruan Tang struggled to breathe, her eyes misted with unshed tears, her dazed expression beautiful and dizzyingly sweet.
“I thought… you wanted to leave?”
“Not anymore.”
His long fingers brushed against her lips. He forced himself not to kiss her again, voice low and thick with emotion.
“I belong to you now. Don’t even think about pushing me away.”
He glanced toward his furious younger brother on the other side of the barrier, lips curling into a victorious smirk.
Then, as if to drive the point home, he lowered his head—and planted another soft kiss at the corner of her lips.
His voice dropped to a gentle murmur:
“Next time… I’ll kiss you until you forget how to breathe.”
