- Chapter 33 - Midnight Visitor, Jealous Lover
That night, Ruan Tang was still in a daze.
What had gotten into Leng Li? How did things escalate like that so suddenly…?
“Tongtong, do you think mermaids eat people?”
The system nearly fell off its chair.
“Tangtang, you idiot, what are you thinking! Mermaids don’t eat people! If anything, it’s the deranged humans who dream of eating mermaids—rumor has it mermaid flesh grants immortality…”
“B-But his expression that day—it seriously looked like he was going to eat me alive…”
Ruan Tang burrowed deeper under the covers, only her rosy cheeks poking out—looking pitiful and helpless.
Tongtong went momentarily speechless.
“…Ahem. I mean… technically, you could say mermaids eat people, but not in the way you’re thinking…”
In other words, not literally. But definitely metaphorically. Ahem.
Ruan Tang let out a tiny shriek and hid her entire head under the blanket.
“I knew it! If I disobey, I’ll be eaten! Wuwuwu… If he does eat me, I hope it’s not deep-fried. Maybe just cold with dipping sauce…”
“Pfft.”
Tongtong couldn’t help laughing, but quickly tried to comfort her:
“Don’t worry, Tangtang. I think Leng Li’s just head over heels for you. And hey, you don’t even have an official pairing in this world—so why not try dating him?”
“D-Dating…?”
Ruan Tang tilted her head, looking confused.
She didn’t really understand how dating worked. In the last world, she’d only followed the mission instructions that Tongtong gave her.
When she was alive, her body had been so frail that her family kept her confined indoors. She rarely ever went outside.
So she lacked basic life experience—and had no clue how relationships worked either.
“But I just want to complete missions and earn points…”
Ruan Tang pouted. She clearly wasn’t interested in the whole “falling in love” idea.
“When’s the male lead going to show up? I’ve decided! I’ll try a little harder to convince Leng Li to turn back into a girl—then I’ll pair her up with the male lead!”
Tongtong checked the timeline: “Soon, really soon! Just a few more days!”
As for the mission… Tongtong had pretty much given up hope.
Anyone with eyes could tell that Leng Li was head-over-heels for Tangtang.
Only this clueless girl was still trying to play matchmaker for the official pairing.
What a rocky road ahead…
Ruan Tang even looked up over eighty different ways to “play wingwoman” on her phone, determined to get Leng Li and the male lead together.
Eventually, she fell asleep from exhaustion.
She had a dream—someone was quietly slipping under her covers.
A slender, slightly chilly body curled up beside her, wrapping her into an embrace.
A fuzzy, kitten-like head nestled into the crook of her neck and gently rubbed against her.
A soft, youthful voice whispered over and over beside her ear: “Tangtang… good girl, my Tangtang… mine, all mine…”
The kitten even bit her on the neck.
Ruan Tang thought she was about to be eaten again—and woke up with a start.
Opening her eyes, she saw a head of soft silver hair bathed in moonlight, brushing against her neck, shimmering faintly.
Her neck itched slightly—and stung a little too.
The boy lifted his head. Pale golden cat eyes gleamed as he smiled at her, revealing a pair of small, sharp canines.
“Sorry, did I wake you?”
Wait… so that wasn’t a dream?
Ruan Tang jumped, about to scream, when Leng Li quickly covered her mouth, lowering his voice.
“Shhh—keep your voice down. I snuck over without my brother knowing.”
“If he finds out, he’ll break my legs for sure.”
Ruan Tang blinked a few times, her mind slowly catching up.
Oh, it was just Leng Li.
She’d thought it was some kind of energy-sucking cat demon.
“Be good, don’t make a sound, okay?”
Ruan Tang took a few calming breaths and nodded lightly.
Only then did Leng Li remove his hand and wrap his arm around her waist again.
She was wearing a thin, gauzy nightgown. Through the soft, sheer fabric, he could feel the warmth and softness of her skin.
He hadn’t intended anything inappropriate, but now that she was so close, her dewy eyes gazing up at him, her warm, sweet breath brushing his cheek—his heart began to pound.
The boy’s face, as pale and flawless as white jade, flushed bright red.
“S-Sorry… It’s just… after seeing what happened with my brother today, I was a little upset…”
He’d been tossing and turning, unable to sleep, the anger in his chest growing.
So he came to find Ruan Tang.
Only with this soft, sweet girl in his arms did his restless heart begin to settle.
But in its place… rose a different kind of heat.
One not so easy to put out.
He buried his face in the crook of her neck, voice low and muffled.
“Damn it… he beat me to it… It should’ve been me. You like me—so why was it him…”
Ruan Tang didn’t catch what he was muttering. After a moment’s thought, she figured it out:
Leng Li must be jealous—he thought she was stealing his brother’s attention.
So she stroked his hair gently and offered a soft reassurance.
“Your brother still cares about you more—I can tell!”
Tongtong silently rolled its eyes: (t/n: sarcasm) If she can tell, I’ll eat my circuit board.
Leng Li couldn’t help letting out a soft laugh, his clear young voice vibrating against her chest.
“Silly Tangtang, you’re so clueless. No wonder my brother managed to take advantage of you.”
Ruan Tang pouted in protest.
“I’m trying to comfort you, and you call me clueless…”
“Because you are! You’re a little fool, totally defenseless. If someone sold you off, you’d help count the money. From now on, stay away from my brother. One day, he really will eat you up, and you won’t even know it! Got it?”
Her voice trembled at that.
“Wait… so mermaids… do eat people?”
Leng Li froze for a second, then burst out laughing again.
His shoulders shook from trying to hold it in—he didn’t dare laugh out loud in case he woke his older brother next door.
Eventually, he collapsed on top of her, completely drained from stifling his laughter.
“Do you… do you even know how painful it is to hold in a laugh like that?”
Ruan Tang looked completely innocent.
“Did I say something funny?”
Leng Li pushed himself up, lowering his long lashes as he gazed down at her.
Soft, pure, and sweet as sugar—like the most delicate piece of milk candy. Too fragile to bite, too precious to drop.
His eyes darkened, and his voice grew gentler than ever.
“I honestly don’t know what to do with you.”
Ruan Tang pouted again.
“Just don’t eat me, okay?”
His gaze suddenly fell on those soft, plump lips.
The scene he’d witnessed earlier that day replayed in his mind—his eyes narrowing slightly.
His voice dropped, low and dark.
“My brother tasted them. Now it’s my turn.”
And with that, he leaned down and kissed her.
Ruan Tang’s eyes flew wide open in shock.
Moonlight poured through the window, casting a silvery glow across the boy’s slender shoulders and neck.
His back was tense and straight from sheer nerves, and the kiss—clumsy and shy—barely lingered two seconds.
His heart was already pounding like mad, nearly leaping out of his chest.
And then—he froze.
Oh no… What now?
How do you even… kiss properly…?
I don’t know how…!
