- Chapter 87 - Rock & Reverie
Chi Cheng steadied Ruan Tang and glanced down at her.
From this angle, he caught a glimpse of her pale, delicate nape. The night breeze lifted strands of her dark hair, brushing across the faintly flushed curve of her cheek…
—That shy, downturned tilt of her head.
It stirred something reckless inside him.
He wanted to kiss her again.
But Ruan Tang seemed far too embarrassed, unable to meet his eyes. She blurted out a hurried goodbye and turned to run back toward the dormitory.
Chi Cheng quickly caught her slender white wrist.
“Wait!”
The sweep of her fluttering skirt brushed against his arm, leaving a tingling itch.
“Tangtang, tomorrow night I’ve got a live. Will you come watch?”
Ruan Tang turned back, blinking her peach-blossom eyes in confusion.
“Live?”
Chi Cheng rubbed his nose awkwardly, his striking, rebellious face glowing even more magnetic beneath the night sky.
“A live show. A performance.”
He hesitated, then added:
“Forgot to mention it earlier. I play drums for an underground rock band.”
Ruan Tang’s eyes immediately lit up.
Rock! An underground band! A drummer!
All things she’d only ever read about in books—never experienced. So cool!
“Yes, yes! I want to go! What time?”
Seeing the sparkle in her gaze, Chi Cheng’s heart nearly leapt out of his chest.
Too… too damn cute!!!
Calm down. Keep the cool-guy image.
Forcing himself into composure, he lowered his voice to a steady rumble.
“Seven o’clock tomorrow night. I’ll come pick you up.”
Ruan Tang’s eyes curved into a sweet smile, soft and obedient.
“Okay!”
She waved him a gentle goodnight, then slipped into the dorms.
Chi Cheng stood watching the door long after she disappeared, breathing in deeply.
The faint sweetness of her scent still lingered in the air.
He grinned to himself like an idiot.
So sweet.
“What the hell, Tangtang?! You just went out once and came back with a new boyfriend?!”
As soon as Ruan Tang returned to her dorm, her roommates swarmed her with gossip.
“…I broke up, and then… just happened to run into Chi Cheng…”
Ruan Tang faltered, unsure how to explain. She obviously couldn’t say her system had simply swapped her strategy target.
Luckily, though noisy and nosy, her roommates were kind-hearted. They never bullied her.
So when they heard her vague explanation, they only teased playfully.
“Not bad, Tangtang! Real scumbag vibes!”
“Love it! Nothing better than seeing handsome guys get played.”
“Exactly! In all those novels, it’s always the male lead two-timing, flirting around with a harem of women, while the female lead pines away like a fool. Makes me so mad!”
“Right?! Time for these trash men to feel what it’s like to be strung along!”
“Besides, Tangtang, you’re not even being a scumbag. You broke up—of course you can date someone new!”
“Yeah, yeah! I support you, Tangtang!”
Ruan Tang’s eyes grew misty as she looked at their genuine smiles.
“Thank you, all of you…”
Her roommates were stunned, clutching at their hearts as her tear-bright peach-blossom eyes turned soft.
“Holy—no wonder those guys keep falling for her!”
This must be what they meant by beauty that could topple nations. (t/n: 禍國殃民/倾城倾国 refers to a woman so beautiful she could cause kingdoms to fall.)
Good thing they were straight—or they might’ve just bent right then.
The next day, not even close to the appointed time—
Chi Cheng was already ditching rehearsal to stand outside her dorm.
He hadn’t told her. Just leaned casually against his motorcycle, waiting.
But Ruan Tang had gone out to dinner with her roommates. By the time she returned, it was nearly seven.
From afar, she spotted him—head slightly lowered, scrolling his phone with one hand.
His side profile was sharp, all strong lines and harsh edges. The high bridge of his nose, the scar-like slash of his broken brow, gave him an almost menacing look.
An unlit cigarette dangled carelessly from his lips, his silver lip ring gleaming faintly under the lights.
Girls passing by stole shy glances at him, cheeks flushed—but his aura was too intimidating to approach.
Even Ruan Tang’s roommates hesitated.
“Tangtang, your new boyfriend looks kind of scary… are you sure it’s okay?”
Ruan Tang tilted her head in puzzlement.
“Scary? No way. Chi Cheng-gege is really gentle!”
Just then, a brave girl mustered up her courage and walked straight up to Chi Cheng.
“Um… can I… have your number?”
Chi Cheng didn’t even glance at her. His voice came out sharp and impatient:
“Scram.”
The roommates fell into stunned silence: “…”
Tangtang, that’s what you call gentle?!
Truthfully, Chi Cheng’s thoughts were simple.
I’m waiting for my girlfriend here! What if Tangtang sees me with another girl and misunderstands? Hell no!
So of course his tone came out harsher than usual.
Ruan Tang jogged over, hands braced on her knees as she caught her breath. Then she lifted her bright peach eyes to look up at him.
“Chi Cheng-gege! Sorry, did you wait long?”
And just like that—her roommates witnessed the transformation firsthand.
The violent, menacing wolfdog melted instantly into a loyal, trembling house pet.
Chi Cheng snapped upright, back rigid, every muscle taut with nervous tension.
His gaze burned hot and dazed, dizzy with happiness.
“No, not at all. I just got here.”
The onlookers: Just got here my ass! I’ve already eaten dinner and walked back and you’ve been standing there the whole damn time!
“Oh right, Chi Cheng-gege, let me introduce you—these are my roommates.”
Ruan Tang beckoned them over.
They approached cautiously, still wary.
But Chi Cheng only offered them a polite smile.
“Thanks for looking after my Tangtang.”
Then he glanced down at his phone and added:
“Sorry, but I’m stealing her away. As an apology, I already ordered milk tea for you all—it should arrive soon.”
The roommates froze, stunned by the unexpected courtesy.
Who would’ve thought this cool, intimidating guy could actually be… thoughtful?
No—that wasn’t it.
It was just that if it concerned Ruan Tang, he’d treat it with all the gentleness in the world.
Clearly, he really did like her.
Chi Cheng personally escorted Ruan Tang to the venue, repeating his reminders again and again before finally heading backstage.
By then, the crowd had already begun filing in. Half an hour before the show, the place was filling fast.
Ruan Tang found herself in the very front row, with a perfect view.
Excited girls beside her were chattering away.
“Where are you from?”
“City A! Took a several-hour flight just to get here! I’ve been too hyped to sleep since the day before yesterday!”
“Same! Finally get to see Chi Cheng-god again! He’s so damn sexy on the drums!!!”
“Ugh, if only we could see him on TV every day!”
“I heard some entertainment company wanted to sign them, but Captain Chi Cheng turned it down! Said he wasn’t interested, just wanted to play for fun. How cool is that?!”
“Well duh, his family’s loaded. (t/n: ‘家裡有礦’ literally means ‘the family has a mine,’ an expression meaning ‘super rich.’) The band really is just a hobby for him. If they cared about money, they’d already be famous all over the country by now!”
