- Chapter 156 - The Game She Shouldn’t Have Played
They were playing a MOBA-style mobile game similar to Honor of Kings, called Final Showdown.
Ruan Tong was the typical type who was terrible at it but loved to play anyway.
Wei Quan, on the other hand, was extremely good — his skills weren’t any worse than a professional player’s — though he rarely played.
He didn’t actually care much about games like this.
He only picked them up because all his friends played, and sometimes he’d join for a match or two.
But this time, since Wei Quan kept getting distracted by glancing at the upstairs bedroom where Ruan Tang was, and Ruan Tong was his usual consistent deadweight…
They were steadily pushed into defeat, stuck at a disadvantage the whole match.
Even the usually calm and emotionless Ruan Tong grew irritable after another black screen, throwing his phone onto the couch.
“I’m going to the bathroom.”
He didn’t even care where the phone landed.
Wei Quan, with nothing to hide anymore, stared straight at Ruan Tang’s closed bedroom door, silently praying it might open.
He wanted so badly to see her again, to hear her voice again.
Maybe his prayer worked, because that very door began to slowly creak open.
Ruan Tang first peeked her little head out, careful and cautious, trying to check if anyone was there.
Only—her gaze landed right on Wei Quan’s unblinking stare.
Startled, her small face flushed a quick pink.
She gave him a polite, embarrassed little smile, then tugged at the hem of her oversized T-shirt, lowered her lashes, and walked timidly down the stairs toward the sofa.
Wei Quan’s throat was suddenly unbearably dry.
His eyes followed the soft girl standing before him, tracing up from her bare calves to her damp, shining peach blossom eyes.
A delicate, beautiful girl was standing right in front of him, head lowered, cheeks tinted a soft pink, and that sweet voice came out in a soft murmur:
“Um… could you move over a little?”
Wei Quan froze for a second, then disappointment flickered in his eyes.
So she wasn’t here for him.
Still, he obediently shifted to the side.
Ruan Tang’s eyes lit up when she spotted the charger in the corner of the sofa. She picked it up and turned to leave.
“Wait!”
The words slipped out of Wei Quan’s mouth before he could stop himself.
Ruan Tang turned her head, puzzled, her peach blossom eyes blinking at him.
“What is it?”
Wei Quan’s pale, handsome face burned red.
He had only wanted to talk to her — but now that he’d stopped her, he had no idea what to say.
Usually the star debater of the school debate team, now he was red-faced and tongue-tied, unable to get out a single word. His heart was pounding uncontrollably.
Just then, Ruan Tang noticed her brother’s phone tossed on the other side of the couch.
The black-and-white death screen had already turned back into color — his character had respawned, but was still standing idle on the map.
Their teammates were furiously raging in the public chat.
【Damn it, my luck must be cursed — got matched with two AFK dogs in ranked!】
【Don’t forget to report them after this!!!】
Ruan Tang had often seen her brother glued to this game, though whenever she peeked, his screen was usually black-and-white from being dead.
This was the first time she’d seen it in color — and she was curious.
“Huh? So it’s not actually a black-and-white game?”
Wei Quan: “Pfft—”
He was about to explain when Ruan Tang suddenly picked up the phone and started fiddling with it.
Wei Quan spoke up quickly, his voice clear, youthful.
“Do you want to play? I can teach you.”
Ruan Tang didn’t even look up. Her bright eyes stayed fixed on the screen as she answered softly:
“It’s fine, I’ll just try and figure it out myself.”
Wei Quan thought she looked unbearably cute like this, and couldn’t take his eyes off her.
Still, he didn’t take her words seriously.
This type of game wasn’t easy to just pick up.
Even he had gone through a rough beginner’s period, learning all the heroes’ skills.
There was no way she could just play well on her first try.
But before long, his smile froze, replaced by growing astonishment.
The girl hid her character in a bush, practiced a few skills, glanced at the skill descriptions — then started playing seriously.
Right then, a small team fight broke out. The same support who had been cursing in chat was caught by the enemy and taken down.
Controlling her brother’s jungler, Ruan Tang calmly seized the enemy ADC’s misstep in positioning — and killed him instantly.
She leaned closer to the screen, long lashes lowering in quiet concentration as her slender fingers deftly moved across the screen. Her focused profile was devastatingly beautiful.
Wei Quan was stunned.
He realized he couldn’t just slack off anymore and began playing his top lane seriously.
The enemy team hadn’t realized how bad things had gotten, and they kept getting reckless.
Ruan Tang farmed like crazy, stealing towers, even snatching a dragon. In the next teamfight, she effortlessly picked off both enemy carries. Coordinating with Wei Quan, they wiped out the entire opposing team.
In under ten minutes, they had pulled off a flawless comeback victory.
As Ruan Tang’s character diligently hacked away at the enemy base, the previously mouthy support typed a very different message:
【God-tier Jungler, please carry me next game! You can AFK as long as you want, however long you want, I’ll even flame the teammates for you!!!】
Wei Quan almost laughed.
But he didn’t. Instead, he typed into the team chat:
【She’s taken. Not carrying.】
The support seemed stunned for a second, then typed a single question mark.
【Wait, she? She’s a girl?】
【Goddess Jungler, duo queue with me pls!!!】
The support was so desperate he even turned on his mic.
【Come on, beautiful, queue with me! I’m a clean-cut college guy, six feet tall!】
The sudden voice startled Ruan Tang so much that she dropped the phone with a clack.
Wei Quan quickly bent to pick it up for her.
Then he opened team voice chat and, in a cold clipped tone, said:
“Sorry. I’m six-foot-three.”
When he hung up, even he felt embarrassed.
Why had he been so childish? Why had he stooped to arguing with some random stranger?
But the moment someone tried to flirt with Ruan Tang, he just couldn’t stand it.
No matter what, he couldn’t stay calm.
