- Chapter 210 - Only One Dog at Her Side
Ruan Tang jumped in fright and looked over.
Chi Yang was crouched in the corner by the dorm entrance, a cigarette between his lips.
In the shifting glow and shadow, his sharp, slightly fierce features looked even darker.
No one knew how long he had been waiting there. He rose slowly, crushed the cigarette out, flicked it into the trash, dusted off his clothes, and shoved his hands in his pockets as he walked forward.
From the shadows into the light, his striking, unruly face seemed all the more dangerous.
He gave Chi Han a cold once-over, then curved his lips into a smile.
“Not going to introduce me?”
Ruan Tang was startled—he didn’t look like he was in a good mood.
“His name is Chi Han. He’s… he’s my friend.”
Chi Yang sneered, lips curling mockingly.
“Chi Han? ‘Pervert’? Good name. So—what kind of friend? The kind that plays slave-and-master games with you?”
Chi Han immediately stepped in front of her, murmuring low in reassurance.
“Don’t be scared. I’m here. I’ll protect Tangtang.”
A vein bulged at Chi Yang’s temple. He wanted nothing more than to yank this nuisance away—but he had no “right” to, so he only clicked his tongue in frustration.
“Ruan Tang has me to protect her. Who the hell are you supposed to be?”
Chi Han glared. “I’m Tangtang’s dog!”
That shout was loud enough to announce it to the whole campus.
Several students returning late slowed their steps to gawk, and heads poked curiously out from the first and second floors to watch the drama unfold.
This was what people called social death.
Ruan Tang flushed crimson and tugged urgently at Chi Han’s sleeve.
“Let’s just go inside!”
Chi Yang’s gaze stabbed toward their joined hands, and his expression sank even further.
Face dark, he stalked through the dorm entrance first.
When Ruan Tang brought Chi Han back up to the dorm, Chi Yang immediately began interrogating her.
“Talk. What happened tonight?”
Ruan Tang recounted the events in brief.
The moment Chi Yang heard that the stalker had tried to lay hands on her, he shot to his feet, gripping her shoulders.
“You’re not hurt, are you?! Did he touch you?!”
Startled by his sudden nearness, Ruan Tang hadn’t yet answered when Chi Han yanked her into his arms.
His strong arm encircled her slim waist, glaring at Chi Yang like a dog guarding its food.
“I was there to protect Tangtang. She’s fine. Don’t touch her.”
Chi Yang was so furious smoke practically poured out of his head.
Don’t touch “him”?
Where the hell had this mangy mutt come from, daring to stake a claim in front of him?!
He was the one who was supposed to protect Ruan Tang first! Chi Han was nothing!
Chi Yang’s voice went cold. “Let go.”
Chi Han only tightened his grip, shaking his head. “No.”
Chi Yang’s eyes narrowed dangerously. “If you don’t want to die, you’d better let go.”
Chi Han glared back. “You’re trying to break up a pair of lovers!”
Chi Yang’s fist clenched.
“If you don’t know how to use idioms, then shut the hell up! You two don’t count as a pair of mandarin ducks! At best you’re just ducks! Where’s the second half of the couple?!”
Chi Han, unfazed, rubbed his cheek against the side of Ruan Tang’s neck and bared his teeth in open provocation.
“Doesn’t matter. Tangtang and I are destined lovers! She’s the one fate chose for me!”
Chi Yang’s rage hit its limit.
He seized Chi Han by the collar and dragged him off to the side.
“Tangtang, stay back. Or his blood’s going to splatter on you.”
Ruan Tang cried out in alarm: “Don’t fight!”
Chi Yang snapped back: “He started it!”
Dragged along, Chi Han still craned his neck stubbornly to shout: “I’m telling the truth! Tangtang and I were lovers in our past life!”
Chi Yang wanted nothing more than to stuff a rag in his mouth.
His fist was halfway up when Ruan Tang caught his wrist.
“A-Yang! Don’t—”
Chi Yang looked down at her, eyes filled with barely checked fury—and something deeper, a gnawing jealousy.
“You’re still protecting him? Don’t you know what he’s thinking about you? Don’t you care at all about me—cough, cough—”
He nearly slipped. He quickly corrected himself: “—about Yan Qing’s feelings?!”
Ruan Tang blinked in confusion.
What did letting Chi Han crash in the dorm for one night have to do with Yan Qing?
Seeing her blank look, Chi Yang scowled, tossing down an ultimatum.
“Choose. Him, or me.”
Ruan Tang tilted her head, more bewildered than ever.
“I can only have one best friend? Can’t I keep both of you?”
Chi Han’s eyes reddened. “Tangtang, you’re so cruel. You already have me, but you still want someone else… uuu…”
Chi Yang’s eyes reddened with anger as well. “Fine! Both, huh? Fine! Then I’m leaving! If I stay here any longer, I’m a dog!”
He spun on his heel and stormed out, slamming the door so hard the walls rattled.
It seemed he was really mad this time.
…
But not long after, the door creaked open again.
Chi Yang stood in the doorway, his expression awkward but stiff.
Ruan Tang’s eyes lit up. “You came back?”
Chi Yang turned his face aside, scratching his head in frustration.
His lips parted, and after an immense struggle, he grudgingly squeezed out: “Woof…”
Ruan Tang: pfft.
Chi Yang’s face flushed red, then green.
Ruan Tang quickly tried to stifle her laugh. “S-sorry, I wasn’t laughing at you. I just suddenly thought of something happy…”
Chi Yang, giving up all pretense, lifted his chin defiantly.
“I figured it out! If I left, that idiot would have exactly what he wants! He’d be free to stick to you all night!”
His gaze grew resentful, fixed on her.
“And besides, you’re too naïve. Someone could eat you up and wipe their mouth clean and you wouldn’t even notice. I have to stay and keep an eye on you.”
Ruan Tang caught the awkward concern beneath his words, and her soft smile bloomed.
She tugged lightly on his shirt hem. “A-Yang is the best.”
Chi Yang’s heart skipped violently.
His ears went crimson, as if bleeding, and he turned away with a gruff voice.
“What’s so great about that? Still doesn’t compare to some stray dog you picked up.”
Chi Han glared. “You’re the stray dog! I’m not a stray! I’m Tangtang’s exclusive loyal dog!!”
Chi Yang: “Idiot.”
…
After her shower, Ruan Tang remembered to wrap her bandages tightly before stepping out.
The moment she emerged, Chi Han latched onto her.
Like an affectionate hound, he lowered his head and buried his face at her slender neck, inhaling deeply with bliss.
“Tangtang smells so good.”
Chi Yang grabbed him by the back of the collar, yanking him away with a scowl.
“Stop sniffing around. You really think you’re a dog?”
Chi Han looked at him with perfect seriousness. “Aren’t you one too? I heard your bark just now.”
Chi Yang’s face darkened. He flung Chi Han onto the sofa.
“You’re sleeping there tonight.”
Chi Han wailed. “No! I want to sleep with Tangtang!”
Chi Yang’s temple throbbed. “Don’t even think about it! You think I’m dead?!”
Even if he was dead, he’d drag this idiot down with him before letting him take advantage of Ruan Tang!
Chi Han scrambled back to Ruan Tang’s side, tugging pitifully at the hem of her pajama top, his eyes downcast.
“Tangtang, can I warm your bed? I can even be your body pillow. I’ll be really good—I definitely won’t [beep—] or [beep—] you.”
