- Chapter 138 - The Pure-Hearted Zombie King Who Protects a Lone Human (5) Soft Flesh, Sharp Teeth
Around four in the afternoon, the sky suddenly unleashed a downpour of blackish-purple rain. The heavy drops pelted the ground like falling hail, each splatter resembling the oozing pus of infected zombies.
The strange rain carried a pungent, metallic stench. Instead of cooling the air, it made the atmosphere even more suffocating and oppressive.
Plants, animals, humans, soil, buildings… everything caught in the storm began to evolve at an alarming pace.
Su Ci and the injured students had been led to the school cafeteria to take shelter from the rain.
Word of the zombie outbreak had spread during lunchtime. Except for the freshman year students who were out on military drills, most others were caught completely off guard.
A good number of students chose to remain in the cafeteria—no one could be sure whether the dorms were still safe, and at least here there was food to survive on.
The first wave of infected appeared to mutate at random. A few zombies had popped up in the cafeteria as well, but two instructors quickly took them down.
Still, staring out at the thick curtain of rain, many fell into a daze, overcome by the bleakness of what felt like the end of the world. With rain like this, would drinking water even be safe anymore?
Some students were typing out emotional, rambling “cyber-wills” online, trying to beat the dying batteries on their phones…
Then came a commotion at the entrance—several instructors had returned, escorting more students into the shelter.
The tall figures in camouflage uniforms immediately helped calm the panicked crowd. These were trained professionals—the backbone everyone needed.
But almost immediately, someone sharp-eyed noticed something off: the students the instructors had brought in were all injured—every single one of them.
All except for one stunningly beautiful girl standing next to the head instructor…
In the midst of the disheveled, drenched crowd, she looked as pristine as a dew-covered gardenia bud, untouched and impossibly clean, a serene, fairy-like presence.
There was a beat of silence. Then, someone called out from a corner:
“Instructor, were they scratched by zombies?”
Lu Yunhe didn’t hide the truth. “Yes.”
The atmosphere instantly dropped to freezing point.
In the dimly lit cafeteria, already dark from the power outage, whispers erupted among the students. Nervous, suspicious glances were thrown toward the injured.
The coldness and rejection from others only deepened the despair of the already traumatized students.
Still, they understood. In times like these, who would willingly risk their life for someone else? So they said nothing and quietly huddled in a corner near the door.
Lu Yunhe grabbed a clean towel and handed it to Su Ci, then used some retractable barriers to cordon off a small area.
“We’ll be guarding this spot and keeping watch on the injured. They won’t get a chance to hurt anyone. At the same time, I ask that any other students who’ve been hurt come forward. Hiding it helps no one.”
Because of the outbreak, there weren’t many students in the cafeteria to begin with. Lu Yunhe sent a few instructors to bring food to the injured.
A boy in the crowd hesitantly raised his hand.
“Sir, I… I got scratched too.”
He had kept quiet out of fear—afraid the others would throw him out if they knew. But seeing the instructors treat everyone fairly, he finally found the courage to speak up.
He was also a freshman. On his way from the dorm, he’d been thinking about how his girlfriend probably hadn’t eaten yet. So he’d come to the cafeteria and bought thirty buns in one go.
He hadn’t expected to get quarantined here.
“Thank you, sir.”
He passed out the large bag of buns. Instructor Du couldn’t help but tease:
“Big eater, huh? Stockpiling already?”
The boy scratched his head with an embarrassed grin. “Nah, it’s not for me. My girlfriend eats a lot. I didn’t want her to go hungry, so I saved these for her.”
The crowd burst into laughter. The tension finally eased a bit.
Lu Yunhe also took a meat bun and, without ceremony, stuffed it into Su Ci’s mouth. “I don’t like sweet-and-savory stuff. Don’t waste food.”
Su Ci’s cheeks puffed out like a hamster hoarding food, the sauce dripping down her jaw before she could swallow.
The man reached out to wipe her chin, but ended up with a palm full of sticky sauce. His fingers accidentally grazed her soft skin—it was as smooth and tender as a peeled egg.
The slightest touch left a flushed mark, almost too delicate to handle.
A jolt of electricity seemed to pass between them. They both froze, startled, and instinctively took a few steps away from each other.
Less than two minutes later, Lu Yunhe wandered back over and sat down in the chair beside her, lowering his voice.
“You’re still under observation. I can’t let you out of my sight yet.”
Su Ci blinked innocently as she nibbled her bun. “But Instructor Lu, you keep looking at me like I’m a walking snack. Do you feel the urge to eat me?”
Lu Yunhe swallowed hard, the wound on his arm pulsing with heat. His chest felt tight and itchy, like something was burrowing under his skin.
“I’m reacting that obviously? Don’t worry. If I feel like I’m losing control, I’ll warn you. Just follow my instructions when that happens.”
He assumed it was just a symptom of zombie infection, so he didn’t bother hiding it. Lately, Su Ci looked less like a person and more like a moist, fragrant little pastry.
Even normal food no longer appealed to him.
Every time he looked at her, the primal urge to bite—to devour—overwhelmed his mind, leaving him barely able to think straight.
After finishing her bun, Su Ci looked up at him with the most reasonable kind of entitlement.
“Instructor Lu, can you take me to the restroom? I’m scared there might be a zombie hiding in there.”
“Hold it.”
He pressed a hand to the pulsing vein in his arm, thinking to himself that it wasn’t what was in the bathroom that was dangerous—it was the “zombie” outside who posed the real threat.
Ordinary zombies attacked indiscriminately.
He only wanted to bite her.
“…So I should go alone?”
In the noisy cafeteria, the man sighed so faintly it was almost inaudible. His tall figure turned and began to lead the way.
“Stay close. Don’t fall behind.”
When they reached the women’s restroom, Lu Yunhe stopped.
“Wait outside. I’ll check first to make sure there aren’t any zombies.”
After all, it was the ladies’ room. He raised his voice to ask if anyone was inside. When there was no answer, he stepped in cautiously.
The cafeteria restroom had no windows, only a small ventilation shaft. With the power out, the space was so dark you couldn’t even see your own hand.
Lu Yunhe checked each stall, moving carefully.
Then—behind him—came the sound of dragging footsteps. Heavy. Awkward. Slow.
His body reacted before his brain. He spun around, grabbed the intruder’s wrists, and slammed them against the tile wall, one hand at their throat.
The skin under his palm was soft, smooth. The eyes that stared back at him were bright and dark as ink.
Lu Yunhe didn’t immediately let go. He kept her pinned, voice icy and stern:
“Didn’t I tell you to wait outside?”
“Do you know how dangerous it is to disobey orders and act on your own?”
He was so irritated by her that even his breathing turned unsteady, his eyes glowing faintly red in the shadows.
“I’m not afraid of danger,” Su Ci said, throwing his earlier words right back at him. “If you can’t beat them, join them—right?”
She looked up into his furious eyes, slipped one wrist free, and gently placed it at his lips.
In the softest, most soothing voice, she said something that could ruin a man:
“Lu Yunhe, want to try a bite?”
“I ate your food. I’m just giving you a little something in return.”
“You can bite somewhere else, too… I promise I won’t tell.”
