- Chapter 142 - The Pure-Hearted Zombie King Who Protects Lone Humans (9) “No One Else Can Touch Her”
The first thing Lu Yunhe did was reach for the little zombie—his instinct telling him that the human he had his eyes on could only be bitten by him.
Not even a little zombie could have a bite. What if it accidentally hurt his human?
But when he lifted her shirt to investigate, he found her waist was barely the width of his palm. Her smooth, pale belly looked so delicate, he didn’t even know where to begin.
The warm, soft feel of her skin mesmerized him.
“Grrruuuuughhh…”
The little zombie inside her belly gave him a warning growl, issuing a blatant challenge.
Lu Yunhe blinked his misty gray eyes and glanced down at his overly muscular body. A flicker of jealousy and frustration flashed across his rigid features.
In human terms, he’d been born in the wrong era.
With a body this big, there was no way he could squeeze inside his human like the little zombie. He’d break her. Completely not worth it.
Fighting the sour feeling rising in his chest, Lu Yunhe let out two soft, mournful whimpers. He then carefully picked Su Ci up and placed her on his shoulder, striding steadily out the door.
Imperial Capital University was located inside Beijing’s First Ring Road, surrounded by commercial streets and large shopping malls. With any luck, there were still survivors hiding out nearby.
Relying on a nose sharper than any dog’s, Lu Yunhe avoided every spot that smelled like the living and carried Su Ci straight into a large underground supermarket.
After half a month, the cooked foods and fruits had mostly spoiled, the air thick with a rancid stench. Zombies that had once been cashiers and shoppers now wandered between the aisles.
But packaged goods with long shelf lives were still intact.
This supermarket used to have high foot traffic, which meant more zombies now—but it also meant the shelves were better stocked than most places.
Su Ci couldn’t help but ruffle Lu Yunhe’s prickly buzz cut and praise him generously.
“Little Six, you’re smart. This is a great spot.”
The dumb little zombie tilted his head up and looked at her in a daze.
The human he liked had such a nice voice—it tickled his ears and melted into his brain, like it was trying to plant roots there.
He stuck out his tongue and licked Su Ci’s left wrist, the one hooked around his neck. After a few satisfying slurps, he finally let go.
Su Ci thought he brought her here to find food.
That… wasn’t quite right. With one arm wrapped protectively around her, Lu Yunhe charged at the wandering zombies in the store—barehanded.
His fists cracked open skulls like smashing walnuts. Brains splattered. From the crushed remains, he carefully plucked out small, crystal-clear fragments.
After finding running water, he washed the glistening zombie nuclei clean and held them up to Su Ci’s mouth like a proud offering.
He opened his mouth in demonstration:
“Ahhh—ahhh—”
Su Ci: “……”
“Thanks, but I can’t eat this.” She pointed to the shelf with drinks and snacks. “Just grab me some regular food, okay?”
Lu Yunhe’s eyes dropped to her belly.
“Wah… woo yaaa…”
He had to feed it…
He wasn’t sure which zombie had stashed its kid in his human, but since she was his, that baby zombie was his too.
Zombies were sensitive to human scents. Without enough nutrition, the little zombie might turn on its host and bite its way out.
Su Ci didn’t understand a word he said. Assuming he was trying to feed her in his zombie way, she downed the nuclei like pills.
Satisfied, Lu Yunhe nodded, then plucked some packaged sponge cakes and strawberry milk off the shelf. Bit by bit, he carefully fed his human.
Once she was full, her belly finally stopped growling.
Lu Yunhe pressed his head to her now slightly rounded stomach, listening intently. After a while with no sound, a wave of panic overtook him.
It was his first time feeding a baby zombie.
What if he overfed it and killed it?
Sure, he had thought about this as a way to get rid of the little thing—but he absolutely, definitely had not acted on it!
He looked at Su Ci, riddled with anxiety.
“Ugh… ugh…”
What if she got mad and abandoned him? What if she never wanted him again? No! He’d find a way to make it up to her—maybe even give her another baby zombie.
Just tell him… how to get one inside her belly.
Su Ci was completely charmed by his panicked expression.
“I’m full. Are you still hungry?”
She gently caressed Lu Yunhe’s cool, hard cheek and leaned up to plant a soft kiss on his tightly pressed lips.
Like sunshine breaking through clouds, his perpetually gloomy face instantly lit up. Even if it looked clumsy and stiff on his undead features, the joy was unmistakably real.
A human initiating contact—this was a very good sign.
He’d touched her before. He knew how warm, soft, and slick her mouth could be. And now she’d drunk sweet, tangy milk—it had to taste amazing.
Lu Yunhe couldn’t help but pounce on her, nuzzling and licking with wild affection.
He restrained his teeth, afraid even a nick might turn her into something cold and dead like him. So he just licked. Gently. Over and over.
It didn’t take long for the not-so-dumb zombie to realize his human looked uncomfortable.
She must be getting poked by the hard metal shelves.
He rubbed his face against her in apology, scooped her into his arms, and dashed toward the second basement level where the home goods section was located.
He tried every single bed and finally picked the softest one, laying her down with the care of someone handling fragile glass.
Su Ci sank into the mattress like it was a fluffy cloud. Before she could react, a thick duvet was pulled up to her chin, and Lu Yunhe let out a threatening growl from outside.
Drawn by the sweet scent of human, a swarm of clueless zombies shuffled over—only to be taken out before they even saw her.
Their bulging eyes seemed to scream disbelief. The one who killed them… wasn’t a human.
It was one of their own—and one of the strongest.
After dispatching the threat, Lu Yunhe glanced at his hands, now caked with pus and brain matter.
He smelled.
He reeked…
He reeked!!!
He couldn’t go back and snuggle his human like this—it was unbearable. And with both hands dirty, he couldn’t even carry her to clean himself off.
Was he supposed to just… leave her here?
No. Absolutely not.
Too many other zombies wanted her.
With his arms behind his back, he stood a few feet away, like a guilty kid hiding a stain on his shirt from his mom.
Once the noise outside settled, Su Ci lifted the covers and climbed off the bed, only to find Lu Yunhe standing there, completely spaced out.
“Need to wash your hands? I’ll take you.”
The upper level of the supermarket was part of a mall, complete with fashion stores, restaurants, even an ice rink and indoor pool. The swimming area should have showers.
Lu Yunhe let her grab his wrist and lead him along obediently. For some reason, his wrist tingled—like someone had bitten it before.
The mall was dark from the power outage, but the glass ceiling let in plenty of daylight.
Su Ci grabbed some shower gel and shampoo from the shelves, then headed upstairs to a clothing store and picked out two outfits. As for the zombies in the store…
One of them dared to glance at her for too long and was immediately rewarded with a broken neck and a four-story fall, courtesy of Lu Yunhe—who left a two-meter crater where the body landed.
Su Ci tugged on his ear.
“That was a little much, don’t you think?”
Lu Yunhe rasped, “Fierce…”
His stiff lips stretched into a lopsided grin.
Wasn’t that a compliment?
Then he should be even fiercer next time!
Su Ci scolded,
“No smiling. Be serious.”
Lu Yunhe’s grin only widened. “Smile…”
He liked smiling.
Looking at his human made him want to smile.
But when she shoved him into a dark, cramped shower stall and tried to lock him in alone, his smile collapsed.
“Wahh… no smile…”
Don’t go… he wouldn’t smile anymore…
Su Ci sighed and turned on the showerhead. A fine spray of cold water came pouring down.
The cold didn’t bother Lu Yunhe—he closed his eyes in bliss, then yanked Su Ci into the stall with him and slammed the door shut, locking it tight.
As if she might disappear if he didn’t act fast enough.
“…Do you want me to help you bathe?”
Lu Yunhe blinked rapidly and nodded like crazy.
