- Chapter 145 - The Pure-Hearted Zombie King Who Protects Lone Humans (12) The Price of Staying Human
At the school cafeteria, after Su Ci left with Lu Yunhe, several instructors stationed there began to fall into comas one after another due to infection with the zombie virus.
Cold, hunger, and fear were closing in fast.
Yan Shengnan, who had always been decisive, found herself at a loss. She could righteously order the infected students to be thrown out when they were bitten or scratched.
To avoid complications, it was understandable to occasionally kill the severely infected and bury them under the big banyan tree outside the cafeteria.
But if she got rid of the instructors now, there would be no one left to venture out for supplies. They were all going to starve to death in here!
Torn between fear and desperation, Yan Shengnan gritted her teeth. “Do it! They’ve been unconscious for three days anyway. Keeping them alive is just wasting food!”
Only she knew how miserable those three days had been—every meal skipped, every hunger pang stabbing at her. The more she looked at those useless instructors, the more disgusted she felt.
Lu Yunhe used to bring back three times the supplies they did. These men were probably sneaking food for themselves before returning, pretending to have done their duty.
So killing them before they turned was justified. Let them pay for abusing their authority.
After Zhi Han left, Duan Yiyi was left isolated and powerless. She rarely talked back to Yan Shengnan, but now, watching her approach the unconscious instructors with a cleaver, she finally snapped.
“Stop right there! They haven’t turned yet!”
Duan Yiyi didn’t care that the other woman was armed. She lunged forward, yanking at Yan Shengnan’s matted hair like a madwoman.
Not all infected turned into zombies. At least from what they’d seen so far, most infected were dying of starvation, not mutation.
Yan Shengnan yelped in pain, then retaliated with a slash across Duan Yiyi’s arm, snarling, “You think everyone’s as self-righteous as you?”
Then she sneered. “Oh right, I forgot—your family lives off taxpayers’ money. Who knows how much you’ve embezzled from the country? No wonder you don’t give a damn about wasting food!”
“Lies! The instructors risked their lives to get that food! Giving it to them makes way more sense than wasting it on a selfish leech like you!”
Duan Yiyi’s arms were bleeding badly, but she still managed to tear open the front of Yan Shengnan’s clothes—revealing a festering, oozing wound.
“Oh my god! She’s infected too!”
Gasps rippled through the crowd.
Especially from the students who had been close to her—they quietly stepped back a few paces.
And just like that, the blame shifted.
“You hid your infection? Were you planning to drag us all down with you? That’s sick!”
“No wonder she’s been acting shady. She’s infected herself! A few days ago she was ranting that infected people didn’t deserve food. Look who’s talking!”
“Does anyone remember how she forced Chief Lu and Su Ci to leave?”
“Two-faced b*tches like her deserve to be torn limb from limb!”
With Yan Shengnan and Duan Yiyi still fighting, the others jumped at the perfect excuse to step in—for Duan Yiyi’s “protection,” of course.
A few tall boys stepped forward.
They waited until Duan Yiyi was nearly unconscious before restraining Yan Shengnan and tying her up tightly with rope.
Two fewer mouths to feed.
Just like the other infected, Yan Shengnan was tossed into a corner. No food. No dignity. The cruelest irony was that this rule had been her idea in the first place.
In just two days, she went from proud to pitiful. She tried every trick in the book, but nothing got her a bite to eat.
To the girls, she hissed, “You vicious little witches, have you no compassion?”
“You’re all just jealous because I’m pretty and competent! Afraid I’ll steal your men if I survive!”
“Relax—I’m not interested. But if you don’t stick together now, don’t cry when the men turn you into slaves and toss you out when they’re done with you.”
To the boys, she threw away her usual high-and-mighty, anti-men persona:
“Whoever shares food with me, I’ll agree to be your girlfriend.”
A guy with his girlfriend on his arm dangled a biscuit in front of her face like he was feeding a stray dog.
Yan Shengnan shot a contemptuous glance at the girl in his arms and sneered, “I’m not like your clingy little sweetheart. I don’t play the jealous girlfriend game. You can keep dating her—just share the food with me after you’re done sleeping with me.”
After humiliating her enough, the guy shoved the biscuit into his girlfriend’s mouth, then kicked Yan Shengnan a few times.
“You disgusting thing—how dare you post on the school forum trashing my girl? You don’t even deserve to breathe the same air as her!”
He’d once courted his girlfriend with roses and luxury cars. Yan Shengnan had responded by spreading rumors she was sleeping with rich men for money.
She claimed she would never sell herself for wealth—only to later be exposed by several rich kids who’d all received love letters from her.
The apocalypse had stopped him from getting revenge—until now. And he was going to make the most of it.
Yan Shengnan’s eyes burned with unshed tears.
Whether from anger or hunger, her chest rose and fell rapidly. Her temperature soared.
A dense network of vines erupted from her back…
“Lu… Lu Instructor?”
Zhi Han stared at the strange man in the distance, whose appearance and behavior felt both familiar and eerie. She tentatively waved at him, overwhelmed by the urge to cry.
They’d gambled everything—and survived.
Since Chief Lu was still alive, he must be protecting Su Ci too. Maybe they really could all be okay.
It was the first time Lu Yunhe had encountered a living human.
Not that he was afraid of people—he just didn’t want to see them. What if Su Su, his wife, saw another living human and chose them instead?
So while other zombies ran around trying to bite people, he and Su Su ran around avoiding them.
He left behind a bunch of low-level zombies in the resort area, mostly to scare off any travelers looking to squat.
As for the word “wife,” that was something his human taught him—and he loved using it.
These two humans felt vaguely familiar. Right now, a few low-level zombies were pissing him off with their jabbering, so he strode forward and straightened his collar.
“Compared to the other zombies, who’s more handsome?”
Zhi Han looked bewildered. “…What?”
Was this… a “Most Handsome Zombie Contest”?
Her boyfriend, Yu Yang, was about to speak when Lu Yunhe interrupted sharply, half-threatening:
“Think carefully before you answer. If you get it right, I’ll let you in for a good meal.”
“And if we get it wrong?” Zhi Han asked nervously.
“If you get it wrong…” Lu Yunhe pointed ominously at a group of zombies digging trenches, farming, weeding, scrubbing floors, carrying bricks, and building houses.
“You’ll work with them.”
Zhi Han felt a chill run down her spine. This wasn’t just zombification—it was zombie slavery!
Yu Yang tightened his grip on her and quickly started spinning. “Of course it’s you! You’re the most dashing, the most charismatic, the most elegant, the most refined—like a god among men, better looking than Pan An!”
Lu Yunhe frowned. “Wrong answer.”
“Huh?!” Zhi Han was shocked.
Lu Yunhe explained seriously: “I’m not a man.”
