- Chapter 24 - The Mysterious BOSS Who Keeps the New Player Captive (3) - Love at First Step (on the Snow Blob)
[Blizzard night. The wind cuts like knives, and frost gnaws at your bones. Starving and frozen traveler, walk forward through the snow. The gracious host of “Mid-Mountain Villa” has long awaited your arrival.】
That was the first personal mission Su Ci received.
Judging by the mission description, the environment would be harsh. Worse still, when she was pulled into the instance, she was only wearing a thin autumn jacket.
If she had a weaker constitution, she might freeze into an ice sculpture before making it halfway.
To avoid stirring unrest among the players—and making an already low instance completion rate even worse—Su Ci wore a full set of disguise: a baseball cap, sunglasses, and a face mask.
Even so, she still felt faint gazes probing her from behind—curious looks landing on her neatly tied ponytail, her average-looking outfit, and the exposed skin of her ears.
Thankfully, once the broadcast ended, everyone’s attention turned back to their own missions. Some were analyzing their tasks, while others were comparing notes with each other.
Su Ci waited until most had set off before slipping out of the plaza along with the crowd.
After the players left, the broadcast screen split into 100 smaller windows, each linking to a live stream room unique to one player.
As the first player to depart, Xu Siwei’s stream room had the highest viewership—over 2,000 watchers.
Ordinarily, nobody really tuned in to stream rooms of newbies.
But since “Labyrinth of Lust” was a rare instance and would be added to the main game pool after this beta test, many intermediate players had come to observe and learn.
Then, someone leaked the news that the final game BOSS was present in this instance. The top players and major guilds took notice, swarming the streams to stake out the action.
As for the unlucky lower-tier players? No points meant no VIP access—no way to watch, no chance to learn.
Su Ci’s stream was stuck in the middle, neither hot nor cold, and for a long while, no one even clicked on it.
After following the narrow path out of the misty plaza, the scenery changed entirely. Snow-capped mountains stretched endlessly in all directions. It was breathtaking… and freezing.
Tracks—likely left by some unknown creature—crisscrossed the snow, streaked with glistening trails of blood, leading up the mountainside toward a pale, distant light.
Su Ci took off her mask and crouched to examine the frozen blood and snow.
The cold dulled her senses, but she could still make out a faint sweet-and-sour scent, like some kind of red sugar syrup.
The villa’s host really was quite the welcoming one—what a clever way to guide the guests.
If a player’s stamina dipped and their blood sugar dropped, they could just eat this. It might even save them from passing out and freezing to death.
At that moment, Viewer #1 accidentally clicked into Su Ci’s stream and instantly shrieked.
First glance: Oh, just a female rookie in a mask, sunglasses, and cap—classic introvert i-type.
Second glance: Wait, hold on! What kind of eldritch granny beauty is this?! She’s divine! A goddess! I’m pledging loyalty! I’m her #1 fan!
Third glance: Nooo! Goddess, what are you doing?! You can’t touch monster blood with your perfect hands!
Unaware of any of this, Su Ci simply picked up two hardened blocks of frozen syrup, brushed off the snow, and tucked them into her cap’s brim for later use.
Viewer #1: “Ahhhhhhhhhh!”
He couldn’t take it. This girl was too pitiful. He had to rally the troops—boost her likes, send her gifts, get her to the trending charts!
Very quickly, thanks to this overly chatty viewer, every experienced player who hadn’t entered the instance yet now knew—
the player heading to the Mid-Mountain Villa was an absolutely stunning girl.
But how stunning, exactly? Even the most beautiful players usually ended up sobbing and screaming in S-class instances. No one looked good once the fear kicked in.
Skeptics flooded the stream—and were soon hit with a tidal wave of alien-language expletives.
She really was stunning. Absolutely, impossibly, intergalactically beautiful—beauty that could unite the aesthetic standards of every species in the universe.
And bold, too. Her highlight moments included (but weren’t limited to): collecting monster blood, tossing it into a tree hole occupied by a two-headed snake, and using what looked like a femur as a makeshift walking stick to return a fallen bird’s nest to its branch…
During her journey, Su Ci collected a white, translucent snake molt, two handfuls of unknown bird feathers, and a sturdy bone walking stick.
She was just a rookie, newly dropped into the instance. Of course she felt cold in this heavy snowfall.
But she’d never played horror games before, and the faint goodwill and cries for help from the creatures around her didn’t scare her. She just saw it all as part of the gameplay.
【Enough. I can’t watch anymore. She’s freezing, and she’s still trying to help those damn things? Just kill them for points. Saving them gets you nothing!】
【Viewer “emo” has gifted player Su Ci ×10 “Special Brain Smoothies”】
【Viewer “##&&” has gifted player Su Ci ×33 “Skeletal Frameworks”】
All gifts in the stream could be converted into point income and credited to the player’s account upon successful clearance.
Normally, nobody would waste gifts on rookies. Most of them didn’t survive anyway.
For example, even Xu Siwei’s ultra-popular stream hadn’t received a single paid gift—just free likes and comments.
But Su Ci was different. The veterans’ admiration and heartbreak for her translated into a massive wave of rare-item donations, flooding the stream with flashy effects.
Gradually, points weren’t enough to satisfy them anymore. They started sending ultra-rare gear and items, which covered the stream interface like confetti.
【S-tier Item: “Mama’s Thermal Underwear” – lovingly sewn by a spiritual mother’s hands. Wearing it grants immunity to cold and chills.】
【A-tier Item: “A Cup of Hot Water” – its contents change to what you need most: ginger tea, hot milk tea, cold medicine… anything.】
These items were so rare they couldn’t be bought—only given from viewer inventories. That kind of frenzy said everything.
If Su Ci had known, she definitely would’ve begged them to stop. Because she hadn’t entered this instance to escape—
She came here planning to stay.
Within two short hours, Su Ci’s stream shot to the top of every leaderboard:
Newcomer, Popularity, Tips, Looks, Strength, Oddities…
Players tuning in were stunned.
One rookie had topped every chart, with a popularity rating in the hundreds of millions. And rookie players didn’t even have the means to fake their numbers.
So what was going on here?
Such a powerful newcomer… and she even wanted to taste—uh, test the monsters?
“Sister, come here, let me hug you!”
Mid-Mountain Villa looked distant—but it wasn’t just far. It was dangerously far.
After spending time helping others and braving the journey, Su Ci only had one hour left to reach her destination.
【She’s not gonna make it. At this pace, she’s gonna run out of time. Please don’t let anything happen to her!】
【That haunted house halfway up the mountain is the most dangerous. If a guest arrives late, the front gate crushes them into meat pies and serves them up for a midnight snack.】
Su Ci leaned on her bone staff and climbed as fast as her body could take her.
Something about the snow underfoot felt… strange.
It didn’t make the usual soft crunching sound. Instead, it was oddly thick, with a heavy resistance. When she stomped down, it felt hard and smooth like tiles. When she stepped lightly, she sank in—buried up to her calves.
It felt like… a non-Newtonian fluid.
Su Ci instantly understood.
She stopped walking and let the snow engulf her body halfway. When her fingers brushed it, a tiny patch of snow began to shift and spread, curling around her fingertips.
【Why did she stop? She can’t stay still, she’ll freeze!】
【What the hell kind of haunted instance is this? Even the snow eats people! They really want her dead from mission one!】
As the chat exploded in panic, Su Ci lifted her hand and gently pinched the soft “snow lump” in her palm.
The little clump instantly swelled and turned pink. It grew from the size of a marble into a crystal ball, warm and jelly-soft, bouncing in delight in her palm.
Wife… wifey~~~
It had followed her for so long… so long, so very long.
The very first scoop of snow she picked up—it had been it.
So happy. Unbelievably, overwhelmingly happy!
Su Ci held the little thing up to her face. After thinking for a moment, she decided just to nuzzle it against her cheek. A direct kiss might make it shy enough to melt.
“Caught you…”
She paused, remembering the instance boss didn’t have a name. So she went with the simplest, most direct title—figuring she’d better start getting used to her role early.
“Caught you, baby.”
