- Chapter 280 - He’s Broke for Everyone… Except His Favorite Streamer (21) A Call at Midnight
[ᯅ Call Request Declined]
Staring at the large, glaring characters on the screen, Su Ci fell into silence—and a little self-doubt.
This was the first time someone had ever refused her video call request.
Well… honestly, she wasn’t that curious about Brother Sheng Yan’s looks anyway. As a streamer, falling for your number-one supporter was practically the biggest taboo.
Still, if Brother Sheng Yan happened to be as handsome as the “Cat Emperor” (t/n: a famously good-looking male streamer), young, successful, wealthy, attentive, and utterly obedient—how could anyone not fall for such a high-quality top supporter?
Other big spenders were nice enough to her too—dropping huge amounts of gifts in her live room—but they never made unreasonable requests in private that would put her in a tough spot.
And yet, Sheng Yan had always been the most special one.
Thinking back, he was her first true “super patron” in the strictest sense. On her very first day doing PK battles (t/n: real-time head-to-head competitions between two streamers, with viewers sending gifts to help them win), when two major anchors—Zhou Zhou and Boss Qu—were giving her a hard time, Sheng Yan suddenly appeared out of nowhere and sent over a hundred “Carnival” gifts in one go.
Later, Brother Xing explained that he had arranged it, but Sheng Yan firmly denied it—he even refused reimbursement for the thirty million (t/n: in virtual currency) he’d spent. That alone showed he was a man of honesty and generosity.
Most other patrons who gifted her tended to bicker easily, lacked boundaries, or even jokingly called her their “wife,” making snide remarks as if they had some real relationship with her.
Only Sheng Yan always gifted the most, supported her the most, and tolerated her the most. No matter what she wanted to do, he silently supported and protected her.
After each PK, he would even go to the opposing streamer and send them “medical expense” gifts (t/n: a playful gesture meaning consolation gifts after a defeat), then return to give her double that amount—never once leaving her with the slightest discomfort.
That’s why she’d been willing to video-call him so late at night.
And he had instantly hung up without hesitation.
Instant hang-up. Instant. Maybe he was just an older “dad fan” (t/n: slang for fans who dote on streamers in a protective, fatherly way), raising her like a daughter. In that case, calling so late at night really might have seemed inappropriate…
While Su Ci was busy comforting herself out of the strange little sting she felt, a voice call request popped up. She hesitated for two seconds before accepting.
At first, neither of them spoke. There were only faint, almost inaudible breaths in her Bluetooth earpiece. After about thirty seconds, a deep, magnetic male voice finally broke the silence.
“It’s late. You need to be careful about privacy and security—especially as a girl. Don’t just call strangers on video at night. It’s not safe.”
She had just put on her Bluetooth earphones when that low, velvety voice seemed to curl right into her ear, sending little shivers down her spine. She rubbed her ear and muttered softly—
“…You’re not a stranger, Brother Sheng Yan.”
She wasn’t sure if it was her imagination, but she thought she heard a very low, quick chuckle from the other end.
“It’s late. Go to sleep.”
“…Oh.”
She’d actually spent the evening looking up dozens of “ways to comfort your top supporter” posts online, determined to say something to make him happy later. She hadn’t expected him to just… stop chatting.
Men really were like needles lost in the sea—impossible to figure out.
Was this what they called “falling asleep on mic”?
She thought she’d be up all night, but in reality, she had barely pulled the blanket over herself and closed her eyes before her breathing slowed, and she sank into a deep, sweet sleep.
Su Ci was not a still sleeper. In the middle of the night, the air conditioning made her a little cold. Half-asleep, she fumbled for the blanket, and through her earpiece came faint rustling sounds.
“Mm… ah…”
The sound of a man’s hoarse, strained breathing swept past her ear, carrying with it a heat and dampness she could feel.
She startled awake, the last haze of sleep lifting.
The breathing grew quicker, more urgent, accompanied by the sound of a swallow—loud enough to make her mind go blank. She forgot about the blanket that had fallen to the carpet and sat frozen on the bed.
A sudden, muffled groan broke through the earpiece.
The heavy breathing gradually calmed, replaced by a satisfied sigh… and the sound of tissues being pulled.
The scratch of paper against packaging rasped against her burning ears.
Gulp.
That was the sound of her swallowing—loud in the quiet night.
On the other end, the tissue sounds stopped. The man’s voice came low and deliberately gentle, a touch rough as if unguarded.
“Sorry. Did I wake you?”
Su Ci scrubbed a hand down her face, feeling utterly done with life.
Then, pinching her nose and speaking in a muffled, drowsy “sleep-talk” voice, she murmured, “…Mom, it’s cold… hug Little Ci… I don’t wanna go to school…”
She mumbled a few more incoherent phrases, scooped the fallen blanket from the floor, and wrapped herself up like a silkworm cocoon—wanting to avoid any further awkwardness.
But within minutes, she was too hot to breathe, kicked the blanket to the foot of the bed, and went back to freezing.
In the next room, Shi Yan had heard her say she was cold. He couldn’t sleep after that. He’d just taken a quick shower, and when he came back, the earpiece still carried her little whimpering noises.
He dressed, grabbed his keys, climbed over from his balcony to hers, pushed open the window, and tiptoed into her bedroom.
On the bed, she was curled into a tight ball, arms wrapped around her knees, shivering slightly like a small animal with no sense of security.
Shi Yan picked up the blanket, tucked it carefully around her, and quietly turned up the air conditioning temperature.
Only when her tightly furrowed brows eased did he let out a small sigh of relief.
Breathing in the faint, sweet scent of her room, he felt his legs turn to lead.
What should he do? He didn’t want to leave.
He stayed until nearly four in the morning before rubbing his sore eyes and finally slipping away.
The moment his back disappeared through the window, Su Ci sat bolt upright in bed, cold sweat drying on her forehead, eyes wide in disbelief.
Who wouldn’t be rattled to see a shadow standing by their bed in the middle of the night?
She had never expected her “good neighbor” Shi Yan to sneak into her room in the dead of night…
Just to tuck her in?
When he’d adjusted the air conditioner, the machine had beeped a few times—that was when she’d woken up.
After he left, she couldn’t fall asleep until morning. Her mind was a blank except for the image of him, crowding out all other thoughts.
No matter how she thought about it, it didn’t make sense.
Was it because of that little comic book? Maybe he’d planned to retrieve it under the cover of night and pretend nothing had happened.
But then… why had he stood by her bed for hours?
“Morning. Did you sleep well last night?”
The familiar voice in her ear reminded her the voice call still hadn’t ended.
“Uh… fine. Morning, Brother Sheng Yan.”
She honestly had no idea how she’d survived last night—first overhearing something she shouldn’t have, then being watched half the night by Shi Yan.
Thankfully, Sheng Yan didn’t seem to notice her awkwardness. His voice was as gentle and warm as always.
“Mm. I’m heading to work. See you tonight.”
“Okay… see you tonight.”
She’d planned to take the day off, but because of those last words, she ended up streaming again that evening.
Definitely not because she’d been craving roast duck, sushi, fried chicken, barbecue, spicy noodles…
After the stream, she had barely gotten into bed when Shi Yan climbed in again—this time carrying a folding stool.
He sat quietly by her bed, a serene smile on his face.
“…”
Su Ci peeked at him through narrowed eyes, and a rather unkind but plausible thought came to mind—
Was Shi Yan here… to steal her money?
