- Chapter 217 - About to Become a Millionaire?
A man in a suit stood not far away.
He appeared to be in his early thirties, quite good-looking, with slicked-back hair and an air of confidence.
The man stood still in the coffee shop, surveying the surroundings.
When he recognized Xu Xiuwen’s face, he walked toward them.
He approached the three and said, “You must be Xu Xiuwen, and you must be Hang Fei?”
Seeing them nod, the man smiled and said, “I’m Fan Quan, the head of the purchasing team.”
Xu Xiuwen and Hang Fei were supposed to meet Fan Quan today, so when the man introduced himself, they immediately stood up from their seats.
Fan Quan was very approachable, inviting the three to sit down.
Xu Xiuwen and Hang Fei were both meeting with a TV station purchasing team for the first time and were unfamiliar with the process, so they let Fan Quan take the lead.
After sitting down, Fan Quan ordered a coffee and then chatted with the two briefly before suddenly turning to Cheng Lu and asking, “Who is this?”
Xu Xiuwen quickly introduced her, “She is my girlfriend, Cheng Lu.”
Fan Quan nodded at this and continued chatting with Xu Xiuwen and Hang Fei.
However, the conversation was not about their TV series but rather about their school life, which left Xu Xiuwen and Hang Fei somewhat puzzled.
After a few minutes of such conversation, Fan Quan took a sip of his coffee and looked at Cheng Lu again.
His smile was friendly, but there was something odd in his gaze towards Cheng Lu.
Xu Xiuwen noticed this and felt a bit uncomfortable, so he remained silent.
Fan Quan quickly realized something and laughed, saying to Xu Xiuwen, “I feel like I’ve seen your girlfriend somewhere before.”
Xu Xiuwen was taken aback.
Fan Quan then asked, “Cheng Lu, where is your family from?”
Cheng Lu answered, “Hangzhou.”
Hearing her answer, Fan Quan’s eyes lit up, becoming more confident in his speculation.
He couldn’t help but ask, “Pardon my boldness, but is your father Cheng Xingguo?”
Upon hearing the name “Cheng Xingguo,” Cheng Lu guessed what was coming.
She nodded and confirmed, “Yes, he’s my father.”
Fan Quan smiled widely upon her confirmation.
Looking at Cheng Lu, he said, “Seven years ago, when I had just started working, I followed my boss to your tenth birthday party and met your family. You were just ten then, so young, and now you’ve grown up, looking so beautiful.”
Cheng Lu didn’t remember, but given Fan Quan’s detailed recollection, it seemed he had indeed attended her birthday party.
Fan Quan couldn’t resist asking, “Cheng—”
Seeing Fan Quan about to mention her father’s position, Cheng Lu quickly interrupted, “Let’s not talk about my father today. Let’s discuss your business.”
Fan Quan saw her cool demeanor and realized he was getting carried away.
He quickly composed himself and smiled, saying, “Alright, let’s get down to business.”
Turning to Xu Xiuwen and Hang Fei, he straightforwardly said, “Your show is of good quality. Our internal discussions have set a price range from 150,000 to 350,000 after tax. Initially, I planned to negotiate the price down, but since we’re all acquaintances, let’s settle on 350,000. Do you have any other requests?”
The difference between 150,000 and 350,000 might seem like just 200,000, but in reality, it was significant.
This price was not for the entire series but per episode.
Hang Fei’s completed production had 35 episodes. After taxes, 350,000 per episode amounted to 12,250,000.
If it were 150,000 per episode, it would only be 5,250,000, nearly half the amount.
Xu Xiuwen and Hang Fei exchanged excited glances.
This price far exceeded their expectations.
Although Hang Fei was newly graduated, he had ways to gather information within the industry.
For large production companies, they weren’t worried about not having places to air their shows and could negotiate higher prices with TV stations.
In their situation, getting 200,000 per episode would have been considered good.
The offer of 350,000 was beyond their expectations.
Hang Fei was thrilled.
He wished he could agree on Xu Xiuwen’s behalf.
But that wasn’t possible, so he could only look at Xu Xiuwen, hoping he would accept immediately.
Xu Xiuwen wasn’t foolish. He had done his homework beforehand, knowing that 350,000 per episode was about the highest price a TV station could offer.
So he agreed without hesitation.
After discussing some details and setting a date to sign the contract, Fan Quan said goodbye and left the coffee shop.
Even after Fan Quan left, Hang Fei felt like he was dreaming.
The whole process had been incredibly smooth.
Xu Xiuwen remained calm, realizing that while the quality of their show was essential, Cheng Lu’s influence played a significant role in Fan Quan’s willingness to offer 350,000 without negotiating down.
Recalling Fan Quan’s parting words to Cheng Lu, “Cheng Lu, I’ll definitely visit your father when I get the chance…”
Cheng Lu’s father was Cheng Xingguo.
Xu Xiuwen knew he was an official but wasn’t aware of the specific position. Now it seemed it was quite significant.
He was curious but refrained from asking Cheng Lu immediately.
With business concluded, the three prepared to head back to school.
They took a taxi, and during the ride, Xu Xiuwen occasionally glanced at Cheng Lu, grinning foolishly.
Upon arriving, Hang Fei got off first, and then the taxi stopped at the north gate of the university.
As soon as they got out, Cheng Lu glared at him and said, “Who are you ogling at?”
Xu Xiuwen thought, When did I ogle? But he said aloud, “Can’t I look at my own girlfriend?”
His voice was loud, almost shouting.
Cheng Lu, a bit exasperated, whispered, “Alright, alright, keep your voice down. Do you want everyone to hear?”
Xu Xiuwen stared at her, wanting to hug and kiss her.
Seeing through him, Cheng Lu warned, “This is the campus gate, crowded with people. Don’t act foolish.”
Xu Xiuwen chuckled.
They walked side by side into the campus.
As they walked, Xu Xiuwen said, “Cheng Lu, bringing you today was the right decision. Without you, I bet Fan Quan would have pressed the price down to 150,000.”
Cheng Lu remained silent.
Xu Xiuwen asked, “How high-ranking is your father? Even people from Jiangsu TV station show him such respect.”
Cheng Lu suddenly stopped, looked at him, and asked, “If my father wasn’t an official, would you still like me?”
Xu Xiuwen immediately replied, “Of course I would. My feelings for you have nothing to do with your father. Even if your father were a garbage collector, I’d still like you.”
Cheng Lu, satisfied, smiled and said, “You pass.”
After a pause, she added, “Don’t pry about my father. When the time is right, I’ll tell you.”
Xu Xiuwen nodded to show he understood.
