Rebirth: Daily Face Slaps - Chapter 97
Lin Mengting nodded, her big eyes sparkling as she quietly tried to persuade Mrs. Guo. “Actually, Grandma Guo, you don’t know how interesting some novels can be.”
“How interesting?” Mrs. Guo gave Lin Mengting a sideways glance, deciding to give her more professional books to keep her from wasting time on those strange novels. If that didn’t work, she’d invite Lin Mengting over more often to take her out and introduce her to other friends who could give her guidance.
“A lot of novels are like fairy tales. They end with the characters getting married, but they never talk about what happens after the marriage. I think it’s because once they’re married, there would be a lot of friction in daily life. The pure and passionate love would fade away with constant arguments…”
Do they really think that just by marrying a rich person, they’ll become happy and live like a phoenix?
In today’s world of exploding knowledge and technology, the saying “well-matched in social status” still holds value. People think about different things based on their position in life. Standing higher gives a broader view. Otherwise, why do so many parents tighten their belts to send their children to prestigious schools?
It’s all about making higher-level connections. As the saying goes, “The higher the starting point, the broader the future.”
A girl from an ordinary family, influenced by her environment, might marry into a wealthy family through various means. But to gain acceptance in high society and secure her position, it takes more than just having children. It’s about having the wisdom and ability to navigate that world.
That’s why sayings like “A wise wife brings less trouble for her husband” and “diplomatic wife” exist!
“So, if that girl truly loves Mr. Lin, she would strive to learn and help him. But if she wants to ruin the Lin family, she would act recklessly, draw hatred, and cause the family’s investments to fail. Did you read this in novels too?” Mrs. Guo raised an eyebrow, smiling in a way that was hard to read.
“Sort of.” Lin Mengting said vaguely, thinking about how in a few years, stories filled with intrigue and plots would become widespread in novels and TV shows, making people exclaim, “The plot is too deep!”
Mrs. Guo nodded, unsure if she believed Lin Mengting, but after a moment, she advised, “These stories are for listening and thinking about their lessons. Don’t tell others.”
To Mrs. Guo, expanding Lin Mengting’s perspective and understanding required real-life stories. This was a little plan of hers.
Even though Mrs. Guo didn’t say it outright, Lin Mengting could sense from their actions that they saw something special in her, filling her with gratitude and joy. She made a gesture of zipping her lips and snuggled into Mrs. Guo’s arms like a cute kitten. “Grandma Guo, I’m very tight-lipped. No one can get anything out of me!”
She had always envied girls with loving grandparents. Now, she had her own and didn’t need to envy others anymore.
“Good to know.” Mrs. Guo gently patted Lin Mengting’s head, her smile growing warmer and softer…
When Lin Mengting left that day, she carried a small bag and two large bags full of books.
The small bag contained low-calorie, high-protein snacks specially made by Mrs. Guo, perfect for quick bites between work and study.
“It’s so hot!” Lin Mengting muttered. Even at six in the evening, the outdoor temperature was still scorching, making her wish she could jump into an air-conditioned car.
Unfortunately, she waited at the intersection for half an hour without finding an empty taxi.
Weekends, she thought, of course!
A black car smoothly stopped in front of her, and the passenger window rolled down, revealing a smiling face.
“Hey, Tingting! Aren’t you afraid of turning into charcoal in this heat?” the woman teased.
“Sister Ying, Brother-in-law.” Lin Mengting quickly opened the car door, put her bags on the seat, and got in. She sighed in relief, feeling like a fish returning to water.
“It’s September, and it’s still so hot. How are we supposed to survive?”
“You could stay home,” Lin Chunying said without turning around. “As long as you have books and food, you won’t step out for ten days or half a month!”
That sounded familiar. Lin Mengting paused and then realized it was what she always said herself.
“Sister Ying, you owe me royalties!”
“Yeah, right!” Lin Chunying, surrendering to Lin Mengting’s shamelessness, changed the topic. “So, what good books did you get today?”
“Not many, just enough for a month.” Lin Mengting sighed. “If I could, I’d love to stay at Grandma Guo’s house!”
Lin Chunying raised an eyebrow. “Why do you call her ‘Grandma Guo’ but ‘Professor Yu’?”
“Because Professor Yu is a big shot!” Lin Mengting said with a smile. Who would’ve thought that the influential figure she met by chance at the adult education school would also be teaching her night class?
“Is this karma for being tricked by ‘reborn’ people in my past life? Is this why I have such good luck now?” she wondered.
Lin Chunying was speechless. “Isn’t Grandma Guo also a big shot?”
“She is,” Lin Mengting blinked, giving Lin Chunying a knowing look. “But Grandma Guo is very kind and gentle. I just feel like calling her ‘Grandma Guo’ instead of ‘Professor Guo.'”
“Sure, I believe you,” Lin Chunying rolled her eyes, still unable to get the full story from Lin Mengting. “Are you going home or coming with us for dinner?”
“Hmm…” Lin Mengting hesitated, glancing at the focused driver, Zheng Jiahe, and her sister, who was looking at her expectantly. Finally, she decided to be “selfish.”
“Of course, I’m going home!”
One serving of dog food was enough. Did they really think she wanted a second or third helping?!
