Wang Lifen had earned a thousand or two from picking tea leaves in March, and although her pace was slow, the quality of her work was good! She couldn’t tolerate such remarks now!
She quickly asked, “Am I old?”
Mao Li was once again speechless.
She calculated the old lady’s age in her mind, “You’re already in your seventies or eighties; isn’t that considered old?”
Wu Lan hadn’t realized that there was a hidden meaning in Wang Lifen’s words, implying she was being made to do chores at home. After all, helping to pick some vegetables while everyone ate together wasn’t much of a hardship!
Instead, Wu Lan smiled and responded cheerfully, “Not old, really not old. This year, both you and Dad look energetic and lively. You’re in great shape!”
Indeed, with spiritual energy scattered around the house, in the meals, and in the tea, it subtly improved their spirits, even if it didn’t cure any diseases.
Wang Lifen thought about it and reaffirmed the old saying, “Truly, we were meant for a life of labor; the more we work, the more spirited we feel.”
Wu Lan smiled at Mao Li and said, “Sister-in-law, I was thinking of ordering a table at the family canteen at the village entrance since we have so many people for lunch today. They have good cooking skills and use a traditional stove. But Mom insisted against it.”
Song Hongmei quickly chimed in, “Of course not! We have our own vegetables; why spend money eating elsewhere? It’s too expensive!”
She then sat down without hesitation to pick through a basin of purple vetch, saying, “Tan Tan didn’t even tell me the price when she brought me some of this vegetable last time. This child should have saved it to sell for money! Why give it to us? We are family; we can eat anything.”
Looking at the big bundle of purple vetch with pink flowers in front of her, she felt even more regretful, “These must be too old to eat now.”
Wu Lan laughed, “Tan Tan did mention that. You specifically took her to buy a duck and saved her a good amount of money.”
“Besides, good things should be kept within the family.”
She glanced at the purple vetch in her hand, “It’s just that we were tight on money this year and thought to sell it and see how it goes. Who knew it tasted so good? But now that it’s bloomed, it’s no longer edible. Let’s just stir-fry the rest for lunch.”
