- Chapter 114.1 - The Locust Flowers on the Back Mountain
The whole morning, Mao Li and Sun Yanyan couldn’t get anything they wanted, and even though they tried to control themselves, their faces remained dark and unhappy.
Song Hongmei and Grandma were sitting there sorting vegetables. They carefully picked through a large basin of tender purple vetch, and the two of them had plenty to talk about.
“Twenty yuan per pound, we are eating well today.”
“Exactly, twenty yuan! I say we should have sold it. Mom, don’t you have lettuce in your garden? Pull a few heads, it would be just as good.”
“Yes, I think so too. Lettuce is cheap; you can stew some with meat or stir-fry it lightly, both are tasty.”
“Sigh, Tan Tan is just like my brother, too honest, not good at doing business!”
“That’s right, Sancheng has been honest since he was a kid.”
Wu Lan was in the kitchen, stirring with the spatula. Just listening to their conversation made her feel cheerful.
She thought, whether or not Song Sancheng is honest, we’ll put that aside for now. As for her Tan Tan, she certainly knows how to do business.
She glanced over at the unhappy faces of her sister-in-law and her daughter-in-law, and her mood got even better.
At that moment, Qiao Qiao’s voice was heard from the gate, “Mom, Uncle Zhang taught me how to make compost today.”
“Really?”
Wu Lan raised her voice to respond, “Then you must learn well! Our garden will depend on you in the future!”
Qiao Qiao ran proudly into the courtyard, “I will definitely learn well. I have so many tasks now!”
Then he saw the people in the yard and became even more excited:
“Eldets Aunt Song Hongmei, I didn’t finish the snow cakes you sent last time, so I gave half to Big White.”
Turning around, he noticed Mao Li from the hardware store and that annoying sister-in-law. He snorted and pretended not to see them.
Mao Li and Sun Yanyan were even more irritated. “Tsk, how is this child being taught? Doesn’t he know to greet people?”
Qiao Qiao snorted, “Because I’m silly.”
“Pfft!”
Song Tan couldn’t hold back and burst into laughter.
She quickly joined in, “Indeed, Aunt, you’re so old, why bother with a child?”
The comment had the double impact of saying, “It’s the holiday” and “He’s just a child!”
Mao Li’s face turned a deeper shade of green, and when she saw Eldest Song walking in from outside, she snorted coldly, “You people are really slow; lunch is almost ready, and you’re just getting back.”
Eldest Song, not understanding, asked in confusion, “Sister-in-law is cooking, and you get to eat a ready meal at home, so what’s the rush?”
Mao Li: …
If she weren’t as old as she was, she would have liked to storm back to the city immediately.
But sitting there was frustrating, watching the men comfortably smoking, drinking ordinary mountain-grown tea, and chatting away without a care.
They, on the other hand, hadn’t had a pleasant moment all morning.
Unwilling to let it go, she said, “Tan Tan, you even bought a car when you came back home. That’s quite an investment; it’ll take quite a while to make that back just by selling vegetables.”
“I heard from your mom that you bought several dogs? Why not ask aunt for help? She has a lot of contacts and could get you a better deal.”
“Exactly!” Song Hongmei quickly agreed, “I just heard from your aunt that you spent three thousand yuan. I must say, you probably overpaid!”
