Song Tan’s Chronicle - Chapter 121.1
Now, this was truly a close aunt indeed.
Song Tan looked at her and asked, “Aunt, it’s an entire house! Why didn’t you ask my brother to take care of Seventh Granduncle instead?”
Song Hongmei’s son, Zhu Lingqi, wasn’t even married yet. Even if she had some family savings, what harm could an extra house do?
Song Hongmei blushed. “How do you know I didn’t ask him?”
Her shrewd eyes calculated the value of that house to the last penny. Seventh Granduncle and his wife were still in good health, able to eat and drink without any need for constant care—just the occasional check-in.
Even if they did get sick, they had already said that they wouldn’t need anyone to spend money on them. They had their own health insurance and savings.
The only issue would be if they became unable to care for themselves in the future. But even then, hiring a caregiver wouldn’t cost much.
Seventh Granduncle’s house was in a new residential complex. Given the current real estate market in Yuncheng, an eighteenth-tier city, the price could still reach 8,500 yuan per square meter—an indicator of its prime location, close to both the school district and the city center.
Moreover, the compensation for the house after redevelopment was substantial—it was over 170 square meters! Who wouldn’t want such a valuable property?
So, as soon as Seventh Granduncle hinted at this possibility, Song Hongmei quickly volunteered herself.
At the time, she had been making pancakes at her stall when Seventh Granduncle, carrying a bag of groceries, walked by and commented, “You really don’t have a clue, do you? How many times have I taught you? Even pickling some beans, you still can’t get it right. I can smell that these pickled long beans are off.”
Song Hongmei liked to sprinkle some pickled long beans in her egg pancakes for extra flavor. But who had the time to make pickles at home? She always bought them ready-made.
To her, they tasted fine, but alas, Seventh Granduncle was unimpressed.
Fortunately, no one else was around to witness this slight to her pickled long beans.
Still, Song Hongmei didn’t get upset.
Her pancake-making skills were thanks to Seventh Granduncle’s guidance in the first place. So she smiled and admitted she didn’t have the time for that, then subtly hinted at letting her son take care of him in his old age.
Seventh Granduncle was a straightforward man. Upon hearing this, he raised an eyebrow and asked, “So, you’re interested in my house, aren’t you?”
Song Hongmei thought there was hope and eagerly rubbed her hands together. “Come on now, who wouldn’t want that house? You can rest assured that my whole family would promise to take good care of you!”
Seventh Granduncle wasn’t buying it. “You have only one son, and he has two elderly parents to care for. Once he gets married, there will be children. And if he marries an only child, there will be two more elderly parents on that side… How will you have time for us?”
“That’s not how you calculate it!” Song Hongmei protested stubbornly. “We can still move around just fine! We could still do the cleaning and cooking better than young people!”
Song Tan was curious, “Aunt, I think you make a good point. Why is Seventh Granduncle against it?”
Her aunt’s family was known for being frugal and resourceful. Song Hongmei’s husband was quiet but honest.
Her eldest cousin, didn’t interact much with her, but he didn’t seem to be unreliable.
Seeing how her aunt always kept herself neat, tidy, and spirited, it would be very convenient if Seventh Granduncle agreed, especially since they lived just across from each other in the neighboring community.
